AMSTERDAM.- Fantastic sea creatures, monstrous beasts, whimsical body shapes and fluid contours that seem to drip like syrup from a spoon: all are manifestations of the ornament style known as kwab, ?auricular? or ?lobate? - with the English denominations referring to the organic forms of the ear. In the 17th century their almost molten form was to be found on luxury items such as ewers, dishes, furniture, wall-hangings and frames in the most stylish interiors of the elite. The kwab style is the most sensational and important Dutch contribution to the development of decorative art in Europe. Its originators ? the Dutch silversmiths Paulus and Adam van Vianen and Johannes Lutma ? enjoyed unprecedented fame in their day. VIENNA.- Marking the transition from historicism to Jugendstil, Gustav Klimts oeuvre shaped the beginning of modern art in Vienna. 100 years after his death, the Leopold Museum pays tribute to the figurehead of the period of Vienna around 1900 with a comprehensive exhibition divided into eight thematic emphases and illustrating all the periods of the artists oeuvre by means of some 35 paintings, 90 drawings, 30 photographs and approx. 150 archival documents. SYDNEY (AFP).- Drawings of an Australasian cockatoo discovered on the pages of a 13th century European manuscript suggest trade Down Under was flourishing as far back as medieval times, researchers said Tuesday. Four images of the white cockatoo feature in the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II of Sicily's "De Arte Venandi cum Avibus" (The Art of Hunting with Birds), which dates from between 1241 and 1248 and is held in the Vatican library. SANTA FE, NM.- Art dealer groups, from tribal art organization ATADA to CINOA, the largest global art and antiques trade association, have announced their opposition to U.S. legislation and asked members to contact their Representatives and voice their concerns. HR 5886, subtitled, The Illicit Art and Antiquities Trafficking Prevention Act, would apply the Bank Secrecy Act to dealers in art and antiquities. The bill is now before Congress House Financial Services Committee and appears headed rapidly toward passage in the House of Representatives. Currently, the Bank Secrecy Act applies to banks, financial institutions, credit card institutions, casinos, and dealers in precious metals. The toilette box is from the Duchess of Modena Service and attributed to Nicolas Besnier, Paris, 1719. The piece was estimated at $20,000-30,000. Aileen Ward, Director, Silver & Objects of Vertu Department, commented: It was exciting to handle, research and offer for sale such a rare piece of early French Royal silver. It is now rediscovered and re-joined in scholarship with the rest of the extant pieces of the set.
