Dansk kunst 1780-1930. Christen Købke, En bacchantinde på en søtiger, 1839. Olie på lærred. © Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. COPENHAGEN.- The Glyptotek has acquired an atypical work by Christen Købke, dramatically different from the artists other works represented in museums in Denmark and abroad. The new acquisition, En bacchantinde på en søtiger (A Bacchante on a Sea Tiger) is now on display in the museum as part of a comprehensive presentation of the Glyptoteks collection of Danish Art from 1780 to 1930. With generous support from foundations etc., the Glyptotek has just acquired a new painting by the Danish Golden Age painter, Christen Købke (1810 1848). The work is highly uncharacteristic of the Danish artist, who is best known for his landscape paintings and portraits. But the painting, En bacchantinde på en søtiger (1839) reveals a more decorative and less familiar aspect of the artists work. Not only does this new acquisition significantly enhance the Glyptoteks collection of Golden Age Art; it also differs considerabl ... More |

Galerie Alexis Pentcheff opens an exhibition of works by Dora Maar | | Pablo Picasso's first Cubist sculpture 'Tête de femme (Fernande)' will highlight Christie's sale | | Cincinnati Art Museum hosts Impressionist still lifes in intimate exhibition | Ink and watercolor on paper, monogrammed and bearing the stamp of the sale of the artist's estate on the back, 16 x 24 cm.. MARSEILLE.- This exhibition, organized at the Alexis Pentcheff Gallery in Marseille, presents more than one hundred and sixty original works by Dora Maar, created between the 1960s and the end of her life, during a period when, separated from Picasso with whom she lived for nearly ten years, she gradually withdrew from the world to paint and pray. Dora Maar, who in her youth was a photographer, close to the Surrealists and the artistic avant-garde movements, devoted herself to painting on the advice of Picasso. In the secrecy of her Parisian studio or in that of her house of Ménerbes, in the Vaucluse, she creates intriguing, poetic and abstract works. Works by which she stands out and detaches herself from the hold of her former lover. All the works in the exhibition come from the collection of Dominique de Roquemaurel-Galitzine, jewelry designer and artist, who had acquired, during the sales of the estate ... Hambling has been a prominent and controversial figure in the United Kingdom for over fifty years and is presenting here a significant body of work from the past decade. With a well-documented voice of social engagement, Hambling joins a long history of groundbreaking exhibitions supported by Marlborough including Philip Guston (1970) and Juan Genovés (1967). Embracing the social and political situations in which her paintings are produced, and the vacillations between figurative and abstract readings, her new paintings rhetorically perform as figures of speech. Her most recent Edge paintings, made on tall canvases reminiscent of Chinese ink scrolls, depict mountains and polar wastes through bold accumulations of indigo and white, to suggest an internalpsychologicalwilderness as much as a physical s ... Vienna's Secession presents the DIS collective's major new work | | Long-lost Congressional gold medal to be auctioned | | A new art film from Oscar winner Tim Yip launching 24 March 2022 on MUBI | DIS, Everything But The World, 2021. VIENNA.- How To Become A Fossil presents the DIS collectives major new work Everything But The World (2021, 38min) with a site-specific installation and outdoor sculpture. The film, Everything But The World was conceived as a TV pilot plotting new narratives for new histories. A multi-genre docu-sci-fi, the series departs from the premise of a nature show by turning the camera onto natures least natural invention: us. Connecting the repetitive movements of todays warehouse worker to activities some 10,000 years ago, when many of our ancestors switched from hunting and gathering to farming full-time, Everything But The World challenges post-Enlightenment notions of progress. This is the story of what happens after your property and after your progress. Its over. And baby, you didnt survive. Narrator, Everything But The World In this first episode, the castle becomes a stand in for private property and subjugation: from the Caeta ... It was designed by Augustin Dupre, the French master whose designs for this medal and others, including the Libertas Americana medal, earned him legendary status among the worlds medallic artists. More With his Sci-Fi android, a filmmaker considers what it means to be alive NEW YORK, NY.- Kogonada distinctly remembers the first time the specter of nonexistence dawned upon him. He was alone in his room, and it was a weekend. I suddenly just thought, I havent always been here what did it feel like before I was born? the filmmaker recalled recently at a park in the Baldwin Hills section of Los Angeles. A terrifying wave washed over him with the realization that whatever that is, I will have that again. Kogonada ran into his fathers room, teary-eyed. He was, he estimated, in third grade. That existential confrontation is in some ways at the root of After Yang, the melancholic, soulful sophomore feature from the sometimes cryptic filmmaker. The movie, adapted from a short story by Alexander Weinstein, follows a family in a sci-fi future as they grapple with the strangely affecting loss of their humanlike robot, Yang ... More Carlos Barbosa-Lima, 77, dies; Expanded classical guitar's reach NEW YORK, NY.- Carlos Barbosa-Lima, who was a virtuoso on classical guitar while still a teenager in Brazil and then spent a lifetime expanding the instruments possibilities, bringing classical techniques and sensibilities to his arrangements of Gershwin, the Beatles and especially the music of his fellow Brazilian Antônio Carlos Jobim, died Feb. 23 at a hospital in São Paulo. He was 77. Guitarist Larry Del Casale, who had performed with him for years, said the cause was a heart attack. Barbosa-Lima recorded some 50 albums and performed all over the world, at small recitals and on prestigious stages, including those of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. A Barbosa-Lima concert might include a sonata by Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti, Manha de Carnaval by the Brazilian composer Luiz Bonfá, I Got Rhythm and an encore of Dont ... More Ronny Delrue's second solo exhibition at MLF │ Marie-Laure Fleisch opens in Brussels BRUSSELS.- Nothing is final. Everything consists of so much more than defined and visible reality. Ronny Delrues drawings point to the transparency of everything that surrounds us. In Sculptures of Stones, his recent series of drawings, Delrue works on a larger format than usual. As smoothly as ever, he puts his stream of ideas down on paper. These traces testify that no form is permanent in the transience of our existence. Delrue evocatively draws a head, a torso, and breasts, with or without a face. The figures are partly made of bricks, and the title Sculptures of Stones reinforces the reference to stone busts. We see human images in the drawings, but do we really? These are men, women, sculptures, and then again, they are not. Under the surface, blurry genders, demarcations and gender issues are at play. It is indicative of how we view reality ... More David Beckham's England scooter from 'Road to Lisbon' 2004 Adidas campaign for sale LONDON.- H&H Classics will be selling David Beckhams England scooter from Road to Lisbon from the 2004 Adidas campaign Impossible Is Nothing for an estimate of £9,000-£10,000 at their next sale at the National Motorcycle Museum on April 6th. This is the actual scooter used in the 2004 Adidas advertisement kept by David Beckham for a period of time at his home after filming, as confirmed by the shoot production team at Adidas. Beckham liked the scooter so much he had it shipped to his house in Hampshire where it stayed for two years. The scooter was then used as a competition prize and won by a member of the public. Paul Diamond, who heads H&H Scooter Auctions, says: This scooter is of major interest to sports memorabilia, scooter, England Football and Adidas collectors. It would make a fantastic addition to ... More PATRON announces the representation of Carmen Winant CHICAGO, IL.- Winants multimedia work often utilizes installation and collage techniques to examine feminist modes of survival and revolt. Her most widely-known work is My Birth (2018), an immersive installation developed for MoMAs 2018 Being: New Photography that included over 2,000 photographs of women in the process of preparing for or giving birth, which was collected from books and magazines largely from the 1970s. Her practice situates itself within a lineage of feminist art production, particularly seminal figures like Mierle Laderman Ukeles and Mary Kelly whose works posited that care and the complexities of procreation have radical potential within artistic discourses. Winant joins a roster that includes Bethany Collins, Jennie C. Jones, Jamal Cyrus and Samuel Levi Jones. The announcement follows the artists first show with the gallery ... More Damiani publishes 'Arthur Grace: Communism(s) A Cold War Album' NEW YORK, NY.- For most people in the West, the realities of life behind the Iron Curtain have faded into caricatures of police state repression and bread lines. With the world seemingly again divided between democracies and authoritarian regimes, it is essential that we understand the reality of life in the Soviet Bloc. American photojournalist Arthur Grace was uniquely placed to provide that context. During the 1970s and 1980s Grace traveled extensively behind the Iron Curtain, working primarily for news magazines. One of only a small corps of Western photographers with ongoing access, he was able to delve into the most ordinary corners of peoples daily lives, while also covering significant events. Many of the photographs in this remarkable book are effectively psychological portraits that leave the viewer with a sense of the gamut ... More Tilton Gallery exhibits a selection of paintings by Rebecca Purdum NEW YORK, NY.- Tilton Gallery is presenting a selection of paintings by Rebecca Purdum. They span the years from 1986, when she first exhibited with the gallery, through recent paintings from 2021. This is her eleventh solo show with Tilton Gallery. Rebecca Purdum is an abstract painter who, from her twenties, has had a clear vision of where her calling lies and has consistently pursued her own path. As an abstract painter, Purdum creates works that are both thoroughly contemporary and uniquely distinguishable from those by other artists. Purdum searches for meaning in the very act of painting. She paints directly on the canvas surface with gloved hands, giving her, as she once said, the equivalent of ten simultaneous brushes and allowing her to work from within the painting, to become part of the painting. Purdum creates timeless, often mysterious ... More |
