The 70 leaves of birch bark that make up the Bakhshali manuscript are incredibly fragile and are housed in this specially designed book at the Bodleian Libraries Weston Library, Oxford. Scholars are able to view both sides of the birch bark through the windows of the book. © Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford. OXFORD.- The origin of the symbol zero has long been one of the worlds greatest mathematical mysteries. Today, new carbon dating research commissioned by the University of Oxfords Bodleian Libraries into the ancient Indian Bakhshali manuscript, held at the Bodleian, has revealed it to be hundreds of years older than initially thought, making it the worlds oldest recorded origin of the zero symbol that we use today. The surprising results of the first ever radiocarbon dating conducted on the Bakhshali manuscript, a seminal mathematical text which contains hundreds of zeroes, reveal that it dates from as early as the 3rd or 4th century approximately five centuries older than scholars previously believed. This means that the manuscript in fact predates a 9th century inscription of zero on the wall of a temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, which was previously considered to be the oldest recorded example of a zero used as a placeholder in India. The findings are highly signif ... More |

LONDON.- Andy Warhols seminal Coke Bottle will lead Up Close, a specially curated Evening Auction that will take place 3 October 2017, during Londons Frieze week. The auction will bring together an exceptional group of works to shed light on how artists, including Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol, have turned to small-scale compositions to challenge themselves and unlock new modes of expression. These works can offer a zone of emotional intimacy, an exercise in delicate skill, or even a refreshing liberation from the supervening order of size. One of Warhols very first paintings to incorporate the silkscreen technique for which he became well known, Coke Bottle (1962, estimate £1,800,000 £2,500,000) tells the story of a turning point in twentieth century culture. NEW YORK, NY.- P·P·O·W is presenting a solo exhibition by Aurel Schmidt. I Rot Before I Ripen, features new large-scale mixed media drawings as well as an installation. Schmidt uses gestures from landscape to the doodles of pre-pubescent girls as a vehicle to explore art historical tropes, infusing her works with girlish desire and erotic pleasure. Her complex, detailed drawings often depict hybrid or amalgamated forms that disorient the viewer and introduce absurdity, and oftentimes morbidity, into seemingly picturesque scenes. Images of butterflies, flowers, spider webs, snakes, skeletons, penises, and vulvas co-exist in a hyper erotic landscape of sex and death. Using her personal biography she simultaneously examines heterosexuality from a playful, erotic, and adventuring female perspective and investigates how identity can be newly invented. For the last decade, Schmidt has exposed myths about ... Gabriel Birnbaum, 66, is a senior researcher helping document and define every Hebrew word ever -- from ancient texts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls to the contemporary novels of Israeli literary figures like Amos Oz. It is a mammoth task under way since 1959, and even though a milestone has been reached on the digital project, there are still many years to go. Called the Historical Dictionary Project at Israel's Academy of the Hebrew Language, it will serve as an invaluable resource for scholars, writers and linguists. Does permanence matter? Ephemeral Urbanism featured in exhibition at Pinakothek der Moderne | | Group exhibition that reflects on the relationship between art and architecture | | First edition of art berlin opens with 110 international galleries from 16 countries | Tepito Market, Mexico City. © 2015 Google, DigitalGlobe. MUNICH.- How long-term should urban planning be? Munichs Oktoberfest, the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage in India (or the largest gathering of humans on the planet), the Burning Man Festival in Nevada, and other major events demonstrate that flexible architectural configurations are temporarily deployed around the globe to provide medium-term shelter, often to enormous crowds. Such structures fulfill a range of functional tasks and are used in religious and cultural festivals or can take the form of military camps, refugee camps, or even temporary mining towns. This show traces a global phenomenon that has become increasingly topical given todays current state of mass migration triggered by climate change, political strife, and natural disasters. While the ephemeral in architecture and urbanism has generally been considered to be of minor value, this exhibition claims the oppositepresenting examples ... DUBAI.- Green Art Gallery is presenting a group exhibition that reflects on the relationship between art and architecture, exploring the ways they influence and feed off each other. Infusing symbols that have been traditionally used in architecture, the artists in the exhibition question other formal enquiries and the relationship between man, objects and the space they inhibit. They produce fleeting and ambiguous realities which, momentarily, disturb our conditioned relationship with the objects that surround us. Theatre of the Absurd features works by Farah Atassi, Ana Mazzei, Nika Neelova, Hemali Bhuta and Elena Alonso. In her grid-like paintings, French-Syrian artist Farah Atassi continues to consider space through an exploration of decorative motifs and architectural models. More News | Yamamoto Keiko Rochaix opens exhibition of works by Alessandro Roma LONDON.- Leaving, getting lost, gathering and getting lost again. The Posture of Reverie, as Alessandro Roma loves to refer to, allows us to grasp what we cannot recognise immediately, by taking leaps and jumps, side paths of vision and free associations. This can lead us to generous experiences, rich as unexpected discoveries offering us a special heuristic opening, without the need of validating what we had speculated about. In this exhibition the body tells, abdicates and then returns, in an unceasing waving movement. Emergences and disappearances of evanescent images, in a never predictable register, are the living substance of Alessandro Romas research. In his process of artistic creation the mind is a web but the body is an anchor in the course of an obscure and dreamlike voyage to a knownot-where. The physical root is firm. Despite her stylistic versatilityshe deliberately thwarts attempts to pigeonhole and fence her inEisenman has developed a unique signature style blending classical techniques and compositional forms with influences from underground and popular culture. Relying heavily on the use of colour, both Trayte and Alvarez combine work to create a vivid conversation, taking inspiration from the nature of an equatorial climate and some of the cultural influences from the vast and vibrant region. For Hultén, time is a fourth dimension that conflates art objects with their subject matter in a looping process.
