NOTRE DAME, IN.- The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art presents the first major exhibition in the United States of the work of Father Francis Browne, S.J.(1873-1962). One of the best-known Irish photographers of the early twentieth century, his work documents his country’s involvement in some of the most memorable events of the era. Throughout his life Browne was primarily devoted to his religion, and his avocation as a photographer reflected his faith and ideals. As such, he exemplifies the long tradition of artists committed to religious life. Francis Mary Hegarty Browne was the youngest of eight children, born into an affluent family at Cork in 1880. His mother died soon after his birth, and he was an infant and he was educated in Catholic boarding schools. He received his first camera as a gift when he graduated from secondary school. In 1897, Browne joined the Jesuits and entered the novitiate at St. Stanislaus College. When his fath ... More

Isabelle Huppert believes festivals are crucial to cinema's future
NEW YORK, NY.- Actors often have more than one project on the boil. French actress Isabelle Huppert takes multitasking to the next level. For 11 days (Wednesday through Sept. 7), Huppert is heading up the jury of the Venice Film Festival, watching nearly two dozen movies (together with the other jurors) and handing out awards, including the coveted Golden Lion. In the days and weeks leading up to the festival, Huppert has been working nonstop. For two recent nights in a row, Huppert performed alone onstage at the Ruhrtriennale festival of the arts in Germany, delivering the 100-minute monologue “Bérénice” (an adaptation by Romeo Castellucci of the 17th-century French tragedy by Jean Racine). Days before that, she was on a film set in Belgium, playing a fictionalized version of Liliane Bettencourt — the billion ... More

Russell Malone, acclaimed Jazz guitarist, dies at 60
NEW YORK, NY.- Russell Malone, a jazz guitarist whose encyclopedic knowledge of musicians and songs, combined with a precise yet relaxed playing style, earned him jobs with Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall and many others, as well as a dedicated following as a solo artist, died Friday in Tokyo. He was 60. His death, from a heart attack, was announced on social media by bassist Ron Carter, in whose trio Malone had worked for many years. The trio, with Donald Vega on piano, was touring Japan and had just finished a performance at the Blue Note Tokyo when Malone died. Carter said that he and Vega would continue the tour as a duo. Altman Siegel announces Didier William's second solo show in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Altman Siegel announced Beyond the Bodies’ Edge, Didier William’s second solo show in San Francisco. This exhibition shows three copper-etched prints of cypress trees native to the Southeastern and Gulf Coastal Plains. In his artwork, William unpacks the systems, codes, and traditions that mark cultural identity. For this project, William took several research trips to the Atchafalaya Basin in Louisiana to better understand the direct ancestral relationship between Haiti and New Orleans through the eyes of its unique ecological terrain. The Taxodium distichum, also known as the “wood eternal” or bald cypress, is naturally resistant to erosion and decay and can adapt to various soil conditions. As a species with a lifespan of 600 - 1,200 years, the bald cypress bore witness to significant historical events, ... More

How to survive (and maybe conquer) the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
EDINBURGH.- Nadia Quinn had been warned about bringing her show of wacky comic songs to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Facebook groups, Reddit posts and friends suggested that taking on the 77-year-old festival as an unestablished performer was too daunting. One episode of “Baby Reindeer,” a hit Netflix series that took off at the 2019 Fringe, mines the humiliation that Richard Gadd, the show’s creator, faced performing there in a pub. With nearly 3,500 shows and with comics and clowns vying for attention throughout the month of August, how would Quinn find a venue, housing and people to fill her seats for even a week? She had never even been to the festival, which has the potential to turn unknowns into stars. “Everyone is telling me you can’t understand the Fringe until you go to the Fringe,” Quinn ... More

Galerie Chantal Crousel to open 'Leidy Churchman: Inner Dialogue' this fall
PARIS.- In Inner Dialogue, Leidy Churchman’s first show at Galerie Chantal Crousel, images from previous exhibitions come back around amid new narratives, vantages, and technologies. Taken together, the paintings index the everyday in order to transcend it, making the real spiritual, the material magical, and showing us what it’s like to see, feel, and live in this particular moment. Here, the potent energy of an idea becomes an animal, a sign becomes a refuge, a feeling state a shade of blue, a credit card a meditation on death and transformation; everyday sights and sensations are first themselves and then so much more than themselves. With deft and evocative brushwork, Churchman works with figuration as a means to abstract—to help us to see beyond what we see—translating Buddhist concepts, symbols, and stories into familiar and unfamiliar ... 'The Union' review: Old flames and spy games
NEW YORK, NY.- The “Mission: Impossible” series went missing in action this summer, but that’s no reason to settle for Netflix’s “The Union,” a depressing illustration of the wisdom that sometimes you shouldn’t buy — or stream — generic. The movie combines a catalog of elements from the Tom Cruise franchise (supersecret agents, exotic locales, stunts) with a high-concept twist so silly it might as well have been selected by AI: What if — hear this out — the lead operatives happened to be former high school sweethearts? “The Union,” directed by Julian Farino, kicks off in Trieste, Italy, with a blatant retread of the first “M:I” installment: The agents are on a mission to retrieve a traitor with a stolen hard drive. Suddenly, violence breaks out, and almost the whole team is killed. A survivor from the group, Roxanne (Halle Berry), pitches her boss, ... More
