Giunta Pisano, Croix de San Ranierino. Pise, museo di San Matteo. su concessione del Ministero della Cultura â Musei nazionali di Pisa â Direzione regionale Musei Nazionali Toscana â Firenze. PARIS.- The years 12801290 witnessed a fundamental, even revolutionary development in the history of Western painting: for the first time, a painter sought to depict the world, objects and figures around him as they actually existed. This visionary artist, of whom we know almost nothing and by whom only some fifteen works have come down to us, was Cimabue (Florence, about 1240Pisa [?], 1301/1302). This, the Musée du Louvres first exhibition dedicated to Cimabue, is the product of two events of great importance for the museum: the conservation work of his Maestà , often described as the founding act of Western painting, and the acquisition of a heretofore-unseen Cimabue panel, rediscovered in France in 2019 and listed as a French National Treasure: Christ Mocked. These two paintings, whose conservation work was completed in 2024, provide the starting point for this exhibition, which, by bringing together some forty works, aims to illuminate the groundbreaking manner ... Centre Pompidou celebrates the bold vision of Suzanne Valadon | | American Sublime: Property from an Important Private Collection & 19th Century American and Western Art total $19,230,95 | | Rijksmuseum receives sculpture by famous Italian artist Bernini | Suzanne Valadon, The Casting of the Net, 1914. Oil on canvas. Centre Pompidou, MNAM-CCI/Jacqueline Hyde/Dist. GrandPalaisRmn. PARIS.- The Centre Pompidou is devoting a monograph to Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938), a bold and iconic artist, and one of the most important of her generation. She was on the fringes of the dominant trends of her time - cubism and abstract art were in their infancy, while she ardently defended the need to paint reality - placing the nude, both female and male, at the centre of her work and depicting bodies without artifice or voyeurism. Suzanne Valadon had not been the subject of a monograph since the one devoted to her by the Musée National dArt Moderne in 1967. Presented at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in 2023 (Suzanne Valadon. A World of Her Own), then at the Musée des Beaux-arts de Nantes (2024) and the Museu Nacional dArt de Catalunya (2024), the tribute to this ostensibly modern artist, free of the conventions of her time, continues at the Centre Pompidou in 2025, enhanced by new loans and new archives. I have drawn like ... Bidding was competitive throughout with bids coming in from six different nations in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. American Sublime: Property from an Important Private Collection opened the day, led by Thomas Coles evocative landscape, Mount Chocorua, New Hampshire, which achieved a record for the artist at $1,623,000. More | | Installation Triton by Bernini. Photo: Rijksmuseum/Kelly Schenk. AMSTERDAM.- The Rijksmuseum has received an outstanding sculpture by the Italian artist Bernini on permanent loan from a private collector. It is the only sculpture by this world-renowned Baroque sculptor in the Netherlands. The terracotta study model of Triton standing on a shell was commissioned by the then pope for the Fontana del Moro, which stands on Piazza Navona, one of Romes most important squares. The 72 centimetre tall sculpture was previously on view in the Rijksmuseum in 2020 as part of the CaravaggioBernini exhibition. "This is a truly historic addition to the collection! It is marvellous that, thanks to a private collector, we can now place a sculpture by Bernini on permanent display in the Netherlands for the first time. Bernini had a huge influence on the development of sculpture as an art form in this country, as elsewhere. Many Dutch sculptors travelled to Rome in the 17th century, studied Berninis work and were influenced by him. Among them were Artus Quellinus ... More |

This work, which is being shown in Zurich for the first time, looks set to become another favourite of visitors to the Kunsthaus. It was donated to the Kunsthaus Zürich by Bank Julius Baer and will be on show from 18 January. TEL AVIV.- CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo is presenting a solo exhibition by Radu Comșa (*1975, Sibiu, Romania; lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, Romania). This is the first solo exhibition of the artist in Israel. The work of Radu Comșa employs ever-expansive parameters of painting. His works feature diverse materials such as concrete, paper, fabric, wood, plastic, and metal which are based on the conclusion that painting namely, compositions of colored shapes is all around us. This is the case when we set up a table for dinner; we choose curtains and carpets for our homes; when we hang our laundry; and when we see how the buildings are painted on our citys street lines. Another element deeply embedded in his practice is playfulness, which is also the guiding principle of his project for CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo. For his solo exhibition at the Center, rather than merely presenting his artworks as stand-alone pieces, Comșa also set out to create objects between artworks, appar ... NEW YORK, NY.- George Condos two-part exhibition, Pastels, spanning galleries at both Sprüth Magers and Hauser & Wirth in New York City, offers a glimpse into the artists creative process and unbound inventiveness through the medium of pastel. Condos new works challenge the limits of improvisation within this mediumspontaneously deploying gesso, fields of color and dramatic pastel gestures, all without the benefit of preparatory sketchesto express various states of the human psyche. The artist embraces the act of abstraction within a figural framework in novel ways, materializing the fragmented, elusive nature of ineffable thoughts and feelings. Together, these complementary presentations highlight the sui generis power of Condos oeuvre. The presentation at Hauser & Wirth comprises a new series of puzzle-like portraits, which the artist has dubbed his bizarre characters, their visages simultaneously splintered and affixed by bright geometric ... The exhibition anticipates the artists major museum retrospective at Kunsthaus Zurich in 2026. Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches. Frame: 39 1/4 x 33 inches. Signed and dated lower right. NEW YORK, NY.- Felrath Hines: A Personal Pursuit consists of twenty works, spanning from 1947-1992 in an effort to contextualize how his exposure through his conservation work to different methods and materials affected his personal practice. This exhibition surveys his career for the first time since the Ackland Art Museums 2010 retrospective in North Carolina. Hines career can be characterized by his never-ending exploration, experimentation, and shifting aesthetic. Felrath Hines (1913-1993) believed that painting was, above all else, a personal pursuit. It was something that should exist outside of societal, political, and racial expectations. As an African American artist, Hines was expected to produce realist works that conformed to a stereotype of black art that had emerged in the early twentieth century. Although Hines was committed to the struggle for civil rights, he was equally committed to pursuing whatever artistic style he desired. Hines was a member ... MIDDELBURG.- From January 26 to April 13, 2025, you can visit the solo exhibition The Directions by Hannah Black at Vleeshal. The exhibition is curated by Roos Gortzak. For her solo exhibition at Vleeshal, Hannah Black has developed an immersive installation, consisting of a maze, a cypress, a text, chains, planets, videos, photos, and a selection of artworks from the municipal collection of Middelburg. The premise through all of this is, as the title suggests, navigation. Black explores how one moves through a world in crisis. What directions can you take? What guides you along the way? The maze at Vleeshal offers limited outcomes: ruin, ruin, ruin, and in one case, a door. In the three videos displayed in the maze, Black engages in a conversation with herself under a starry sky about the directions she has taken so far. Stars serve as anchor points in both astrology and astronomy. They also refer to the history of Middelburg: the invention of the telescope by Hans Lipperthey ... More |
