Ant agriculture began 66 million years ago in the aftermath of the asteroid that doomed the dinosaurs
WASHINGTON, DC.- When humans began farming crops thousands of years ago, agriculture had already been around for millions of years. In fact, several animal lineages have been growing their own food since long before humans evolved as a species. According to a new study, colonies of ants began farming fungi when an asteroid struck Earth 66 million years ago. This impact caused a global mass extinction but also created ideal conditions for fungi to thrive. Innovative ants began cultivating the fungi, creating an evolutionary partnership that became even more tightly intertwined 27 million years ago and continues to this day. In a paper published in the journal Science, scientists at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History analyzed genetic data from hundreds of species of fungi and ants to craft detailed evolutionary trees. Comparing these trees ... More

Neïl Beloufa's first institutional solo exhibition in Switzerland at Kunsthalle Basel
BASEL.- “What is your name?”; “What is your occupation?”; “What is your motivation on a scale from personal gain-driven to impact-driven?” These seemingly simple questions are the entry point into Humanities, Neïl Beloufa’s first institutional solo exhibition in Switzerland at Kunsthalle Basel. However, it soon becomes clear that the aim is not to collect psychographic and narrative data. With each answer, visitors build their own digital avatar, guiding them through a nuanced process of self-definition and introspection. Beloufa crafts a complex network of digital and physical spaces where narratives unfold, turning the exhibition into an immersive experience shaped by the visitors themselves. Yet, a critical issue emerges: Who is truly in control? At the heart of the exhibition are the three major installations—Growth, 2024, Tombstone, ... More

TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes opens Contemporary Biennial 2024 The Heretical Proclamation
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE.- TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes opens its first Contemporary Biennial 2024, titled La proclama herética (The Heretical Proclamation), an exhibition that brings together the work of artists who, through various disciplines and languages, present their works as forms of resistance. They propose new perspectives that expand our vision of the world and challenge the restrictions imposed on our identities and historical narratives. The heretic, seen from the prism of power, is a confrontation with the status quo. The act of proposing alternatives, be they political, historical, based on identity or culture, contrary to the monolithic and hegemonic reality of established powers is a gesture of opposition and of believing in the possibility of real change that appears to decrease by the day. The proclamation can ... More

For the exhibition For Our Parents, she intersperses the rooms with a system of references, linguistic allusions, and fragile architectural components. Approximately twenty works from the past two years are on view, including a new series of enamel pieces and a wall drawing. Inspired by the special character ... More

This exhibition is co-organized by The Contemporary Austin. The Museum of Modern Art announces 'Out of the Shadows: Rediscovering Mohammad Reza Aslani'
NEW YORK, NY.- Following on the success of the landmark MoMA exhibition Iranian Cinema before the Revolution, 1925–1979 and the astonishing recent rediscovery of Mohammad Reza Aslani’s Chess of the Wind (1976), the Museum presents a retrospective of the filmmaker’s work—14 newly preserved dramas and documentaries, some never before screened—that deepens our appreciation of this unsung master. A darkly claustrophobic tale of familial greed, cruelty, and subterfuge, Chess of the Wind proudly displayed its 19th-century roots in Henrik Ibsen and Fyodor Dostoevsky even as it hinted unsettlingly at the corruption and moral turpitude of Iran’s Pahlavi regime. Ignored by audiences and critics following its only screening at the Tehran International Film Festival in 1976, the film disappeared for some 40 years until Aslani’s ... More

In Road to Hybridabad, Khan re-reads the magical and fantastical figures found in folktales and lore, with a particular focus on those from South Asia, the Middle East, and other Muslim and immigrant traditions. Khan interprets these figures through contemporary technologies through a new body of work that includes a ten foot tall animatronic djinn head, a forest of telephone poles with djinns atop them, drone powered flying carpets, a boundary wall-destroying sound system, a fountain of endlessly flowing honey, and a robot-like sculpture that is in fact a storytelling “Scheherazade AI.” This ... Exhibition establishes connections to issues of memory, heritage and intimacy
HAMBURG.- The exhibition untranquil now spotlights artworks, performances, figures and events in which bodies and modes of perception become the agents of contradictory states and eventful histories. The works shed light on configurations of power and stimulate our imagination through heterogeneous narratives, while the artistic and performative gestures creatively interrogate what is happening in the world. The exhibition, complete with a programme of performances and films, has been organised in cooperation with the International Summer Festival 2024 at Kampnagel in Hamburg. Transdisciplinary in approach, it presents works of art that shift their narratives off the stage in order to incorporate human or animal figures, modernist buildings, a social housing complex, a rooftop, a public square, a park, an abandoned site, an archaeological excavation ... David Gill Gallery opens an exhibition of works by Sebastian Errazuriz
LONDON.- David Gill Gallery announced ‘Rebuilding Reason’. Continuing an exploration of antiquity, Errazuriz creates works that explore eternal notions of human experience, scale and proportion. Abstracting ancient sculptures, Errazuriz reevaluates our relationship to immediately recognisable cannons of art, blurring boundaries between technology, design and craft. Sculptures that once adorned archaeological sites now serve as structural elements for everyday objects. Figures from classical friezes morph into table bases and shelf supports, while curated artifacts are integrated into furniture. This act of appropriation and transformation brings a new narrative to traditional forms and creates a dialogue between the monumental and the intimate. Sebastian Errazuriz is a Chilean-born, New York-based Artist, Designer. He received international acclaim for his original an ... More
