Visitors use 3D virtual reality goggles as they sit in a room in the Domus Transitoria, Roman Emperor Nero's first palace, destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD on April 12, 2019. The Domus Transitoria was replaced by his Domus Aurea (or Golden House). Alberto PIZZOLI / AFP. by Ella Ide ROME (AFP).- Razed to the ground by the Great Fire of Rome, Emperor Nero's original palace opened to the public for the first time on Friday after a painstaking 10-year restoration. The ruins of the sumptuous "Domus Transitoria", once decorated with gold leaf, precious stones and mother of pearl, lie next to a well-preserved 50-seat latrine used communally by builders and slaves. Nero claimed to be a descendant of Aeneas -- a legendary hero of the Trojan War, as Homer tells it in the Iliad -- and was a big fan of Trojan heroics. He had the ceilings of his palace adorned with mythical scenes from the Trojan War, some of which are now on display at the Palatine Museum next door. The palace was designed to provide respite from baking summer heat, and the emperor would likely have sat on a marble throne facing a line of fountains, under the shade of a silken ... More |

Courtesy Sprüth Magers © Thea Djordjadze / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn. Courtesy Sprüth Magers. Photography: Robert Wedemeyer. LOS ANGELES, CA.- The work of Thea Djordjadze concerns itself, first and foremost, with the poetics and particularities of space. She combines a variety of artistic, industrial, and unconventional materials to produce works full of contrasts and complexity, which she puts into conversation with the architecture and atmosphere of her exhibition spaces through intimate, considered arrangements. Each of her projects is thus ephemeral in nature, open to future reconfiguration. Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are presenting the first solo exhibition of Djordjadzes work in Los Angeles, if I were an early person, which extends the artists investigations into the ways in which context affects the viewing, understanding and experience of art. The core of the exhibition comprises a series of sleek steel vitrines, fronted with Plexiglas panes, which the artist originally designed for her 2017 project at the graphic arts collection of the Pina ... The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is particularly pleased to host the exhibition in light of their close relationship dating from 1995 when the Venice garden was named the Nasher Sculpture Garden in recognition of the Nashers generous support towards its renovation. This exhibition investigates in depth the achievements of Jean (Hans) Arp (1886-1966), one of the most important and multifaceted artists of the modern era, whose experimental approach to creation, radical rethinking of traditional art forms, and collaborative proclivities resonate with the wide-ranging character of art today. LONDON.- One of the most acclaimed artists of his generation, NS Harsha draws on a broad spectrum of Indian painting traditions and popular arts, as well as the western canon, to create quietly philosophical works that reflect on structures, borders and barriers as a series of ever-shifting concepts. A focal point of this exhibition is the major work Reclaiming the Inner Space, 2017. This three-dimensional, wall-mounted work features a herd of approximately 1400 hand-carved wooden elephants that appear to roam a plain made from recycled cardboard packaging, flattened and attached to acrylic mirror. While the elephants refer to the ornaments that one might find in Indian souvenir shops, they also recall the elephant processions of Dasara festivities in Mysore, the artists ... ALFREDO ESTRELLA / AFP. MEXICO CITY.- Ai Weiwei. Resetting Memories explores the traumas of the experiences in both China and Mexico in a narrative that appeals to the obligation to construct social memory. Curated by Cuauhtémoc Medina, this exhibition brings together concerns represented by the destruction of cultural heritage and our relationship to our ancestors with the trauma that is the attack on the future, which supposes violence against young people. The shows presents the Wang Family Ancestral Hall (2015), the largest of the politically inflected readymades that define Ai Weiweis work, and the most significant of his interventions into historical artifacts. It involves the ruined structure of the Wang clans family temple, dating back to the Ming dynasty, 400 years ago. After the agrarian reform ... More |

What can magic and conjuring tell us about the human mind? Smoke and Mirrors: The psychology of magic, a major new exhibition at Wellcome Collection, is the first ever to focus on the relationship between magic and psychology. It seeks the truth about deception, ask how bias and suggestion affect our senses and decisions, and consider what it is about the human condition that means many of us believe in magic and the supernatural, even in the face of logical explanations. Why are our senses so easily fooled? Why do we get a thrill from experiencing a simple trick? What has science and psychology learned from magic? Smoke and Mirrors ... Using this body, thinking of the fountain. is part of this dichotomy, providing a compendium of seven sculptural installations whose physical approach is based on the artist's drawings and studies, transformed through the use of different materials, textures, objects and images that offer keys to reflect on the artists relationship with three main arguments: landscape, architecture and textiles. | More News | Galerie Karsten Greve opens a solo exhibition of the artist Gideon Rubin COLOGNE.- Galerie Karsten Greve Cologne is presenting a solo exhibition of the artist Gideon Rubin (born 1973 in Tel Aviv) in parallel with the ART COLOGNE art fair. In addition to his paintings depicting people, heads and landscapes, the exhibition also includes works on paper from a period of more than ten creative years, from 2008 to 2019. On display are twelve small-format oil paintings reflecting the characters and style of cinema in the Weimar Republic (1918 1933). The beauty of the films of the period stands in stark contrast to the concurrent historical events and the disastrous cultural developments that followed. The National Socialist assumption of power in 1933 brought an abrupt end to this productivity and the joy of cinematic experimentation. With Warning Shadows, Gideon Rubin takes up the eponymous silent film of 1923. As the ... More Exhibition presents new paintings alongside rarely seen works from the 1990s by Otis Jones NEW YORK, NY.- Marc Straus are presenting their second solo exhibition with Dallas based American artist Otis Jones. The exhibition presents new paintings alongside rarely seen works from the 1990s. The exhibition will remain on view until May 19th, 2019. Existing both as painting and sculpture, the works of Otis Jones are unique in their dichotomous aesthetic they are reductive yet robust, playful yet connected to the American Minimalist canon. As renowned critic John Yau wrote: Jones has taken an abstract, reductive possibility and made something fresh and austerely sensual (or is it sensually austere) out of it. Rather than commenting on history, he is moving its possibilities down the road a bit. In the age of nothing new under the sun, thats more than an accomplishment. Its practically a miracle. Paying the utmost attention to even the smallest ... More When traditions fade, Native Americans dance to remember NEW YORK (AFP).- For 56 years, Louis Mofsie has danced with his troupe, making Native American heritage shine and ensuring that age-old steps live on, even if their tribes of origin may have forgotten them. Born in Brooklyn 82 years ago, the director of the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers -- which he founded in 1963 -- is a native New Yorker who only saw Indian reservations on trips out West. The son of a Hopi from Arizona and a Winnebago from Nebraska, he was still passionate about Native American culture as a young man, quickly looking beyond his tribal ties. "We went to different reservations, and we danced with the people and we learned the songs and we learned the dances," recalls Mofsie, who also learned from the large Mohawk community that lived in Brooklyn. "We put these all together, and then we all came back here to New York. ... The production over ten years of both photographic and moving image works, framed by this valley, can be understood as a sustained enquiry into our complex relationship with mountains as spaces of real and imaginary exploration of our place in the world. Arising from her interest in the ways we look after the places temporarily in our care, Manchot focuses on the «back stage» and the hidden labour necessary to make mountain industry function. The video trilogy Out of Bounds (2016) follows two different groups of men whose daily work on the mountain allows tourism to function. A ... La Pietà the iconic image of Christs inert body being supported by the Virgin Mary is one of the most emotionally charged images in all Western Art and also one of the most moving testimonies to human compassion. Compassion is not a word one would associate with Cesare Lucchinis paintings, yet, for their apparent cry of desperation, they also represent a cry for kindness. The overriding theme of his works is to pose, in a highly emotional way, the question, why? Why are these people alone and abandoned? In a western world dominated by an alarming shift to the political right where any form of moderation is immediately shouted down; where episodes of racism are on the rise, Cesare Lucchini addresses the ultimate solitude inherent ...
