ROME (AFP).- Razed to the ground by the Great Fire of Rome, Emperor Nero's original palace opened to the public for the first time on Friday after a painstaking 10-year restoration. The ruins of the sumptuous "Domus Transitoria", once decorated with gold leaf, precious stones and mother of pearl, lie next to a well-preserved 50-seat latrine used communally by builders and slaves. Nero claimed to be a descendant of Aeneas -- a legendary hero of the Trojan War, as Homer tells it in the Iliad -- and was a big fan of Trojan heroics. He had the ceilings of his palace adorned with mythical scenes from the Trojan War, some of which are now on display at the Palatine Museum next door. LOS ANGELES, CA.- The Los Angeles County Museum of Art announced this week that the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors has certified the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) for the museums new building for the permanent collection and approved the project. The Board of Supervisors also authorized the issuance of the $117.5 million balance on its $125 million contribution for the project. The new building, The David Geffen Galleries, is part of a long-term plan to expand and improve LACMAs galleries and public space. As the final component of a decade-long transformation of the campus that nearly doubled exhibition space, programs, and more than doubled attendance, the new building, which has approximately 110,000 square feet of galleries, will replace four aging buildings (Ahmanson, Art of the Americas, Hammer, and Bing). SAO PAULO.- SP-Arte closed its fifteenth edition on Sunday, 7 April, attracting 164 art and design exhibitors from 14 different countries to São Paulos Bienal Pavilion. With works by over 2,000 artists, SP-Arte hosted 36,000 visitors during the five days of the event a record number during its 15 years of existence. SP-Arte is delighted to confirm its 16th edition for next years cultural calendar, which is set to take place from 1 to 5 April 2020. NEW YORK (AFP).- For 56 years, Louis Mofsie has danced with his troupe, making Native American heritage shine and ensuring that age-old steps live on, even if their tribes of origin may have forgotten them. Born in Brooklyn 82 years ago, the director of the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers -- which he founded in 1963 -- is a native New Yorker who only saw Indian reservations on trips out West. The son of a Hopi from Arizona and a Winnebago from Nebraska, he was still passionate about Native American culture as a young man, quickly looking beyond his tribal ties. KENDAL.- A portrait of a woman who fought the most famous legal battle of the Jacobean age has returned to Cumbria. Coming Home: Lady Anne Clifford has gone on display at Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal. The work dated 1618 by William Larkin is the finest portrait of Lady Anne (1590-1676). The painting is on loan from the National Portrait Gallery as part of its COMING HOME project which sees 50 portraits of iconic individuals from the national collection travelling to towns and cities most closely associated with their subjects. LIVERPOOL.- Independent research released this week reveals a growing impact, broader demographic and increased visitor satisfaction with the programme of Liverpool Biennial in 2018. Among the key findings from the research carried out by BOP Consulting are: The 10th edition attracted 160,730 visitors an increase of 47% compared to 2016 who made over 660,000 visits. More than half were first-time attendees. The Biennial continues to play an important role in Liverpools status as a world-leading cultural destination. 50% of visitors in 2018 came from outside the North West of England, including 14% international visitors. Audiences were more diverse and younger 11.2% described their ethnicity as non-White and 38% of visitors were aged under 30, compared to 30% in 2016.
