SYDNEY.- A new exhibition exploring American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt’s affinities with Australian Central Desert Painting and revealing the musical resonances of his work opened at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Sol LeWitt: Affinities and Resonances, a collaboration between Kaldor Public Art Projects and the Art Gallery of NSW, features LeWitt’s work in conversation with paintings by Anmatyerre artists Emily Kame Kngwarreye and Gloria Tamerre Petyarre. The exhibition, which opened on August 27, introduces three new musical commissions, each of which have been developed collaboratively by an American musician and an Indigenous Australian musician in response to a LeWitt work of art. LeWitt was a pivotal figure of late 20th Century American art who coined the term ‘conceptual art’ and whose ideas continue to influence artists around the world. He travelled to Australia on several occasions at the invit ... More

HELSINKI.- What is Finnish about the Finnish National Ballet? That question hung in the air when the company threw itself a 100th-anniversary gala celebration in May, in the imposing modern theater it shares with the Finnish National Opera. Apart from a rushed slideshow, dancers wielding blue-and-white Finnish flags, and an elegant file of all 166 students of the company’s school, also celebrating its 100th anniversary, not much referred to the host country. The dancers onstage were from all over, with some Finns interspersed. The company looked athletic, precise and fairly comfortable in excerpts from old chestnuts (“Swan Lake”), newer chestnuts (“Spartacus”) and contemporary ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- David Nolan Gallery announced that Chakaia Booker has joined the gallery program. Born in 1953 in Newark, New Jersey, Booker received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Rutgers University in 1976 and her Master of Fine Arts from the City College of New York (CUNY) in 1993. Booker studied a variety of disciplines including African dance, ceramics, weaving, basketry and tai ’chi. These practices have shaped her innovative artistic practices in sculpting, painting, collage, and photography, using materials such as rubber, plastic, ceramic, and bronze. Known for her elaborate and ornamental sculptures created from used and discarded construction materials, such as rubber tires that Booker defines as “abstractly African”, the artist merges ecological concerns with explorations of racial and economic difference, globalization, and gender. Her powerful work across diverse mediums has brought forth ... More

This is the artist's third showing with the gallery and his first in Southeast Asia.

BANGKOK .- Over the Influence, Bangkok is presenting, Close My Eyes, a solo exhibition of new paintings, sculptures, and wall works by LA-based artist Mark Whalen. This is the artist’s third showing with the gallery and his first in Southeast Asia. Close My Eyes, features the graphic sculptures that Whalen is widely recognized for — human-like heads and hands that are often paired with everyday objects to explore the uncanny relationships between object and person. Whalen has always found the figure interesting and utilizes it to push his practice conceptually and aesthetically. For this exhibition, Whalen expands his practice to include painting, and wall works — though diverse in media, the artworks remain cohesive as all incorporate a sculptural element, retain the figure, and are deliberately ambiguous. Whalen’s maquettes are born in the digital realm — without gender, physical body, or any other attributes as ... More

San Luis Opispo Museum of Art presents Alyssa Monks: Be Perfectly Still, a retrospcetive   Laumeier Sculpture Park celebrates opening of fall exhibition, Forest Through the Trees   SmartStamp Collaborates with Frieze Seoul, Metagolden, and Digivault Timed to launch of new SmartStamp app

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA.- The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is presenting the first museum retrospective by contemporary artist Alyssa Monks. The exhibition brings together paintings that span the arc of Monks’ career, from the early 2000’s to works created during the pandemic. Through paintings that are expressive, lush, and often intimate, Monks conveys the very essence of being human through works that meditate on love, loss, and the perennial search for self. The paintings included in this exhibition feature large-scale portraits of Monks and those closest to her, portrayed in vulnerable or intimate contexts. Often capturing fragmented elements of a scene, or layering together various spaces and moments, Monks’ works disorient the viewer and invite reflection on one’s own vulnerability. Through the use of thickly applied brushstrokes, and her tendency to flip the background and foreground in her work using semi-transparent filters of gla ... More

ST. LOUIS, MO.- In the Fall of 2022, Laumeier Sculpture Park will explore the beauty and power of trees as an alluring subject matter for artists through its exhibition Forest Through the Trees, on view August 27 – December 11, 2022 in the Aronson Fine Arts Center’s Whitaker Foundation Gallery and Laumeier’s Outdoor Galleries. This group exhibition presents a selection of artists from St. Louis and around the world whose observations range from representation through landscape to conceptual experimentation where the tree is treated as both subject and object. As a sculpture park focused on the conversation between art and nature, the works on view operate in harmony with and in reference to Laumeier’s natural landscape, both organic and manicured. Rather than viewed as a backdrop, the tree as a symbol of nature is respected and revered. Each of the artists in the exhibition ... More

Heather Gaudio Fine Art specializes in emerging and established artists, offering painting, works on paper, photography and sculpture.

NEW CANAAN, CONN.- Heather Gaudio Fine Art is presenting Ferreira & Nascimento: Natural Terrains, featuring new works in porcelain ceramic. This is the first exhibition for Lucas Ferreira in the United States. Born and raised in Brazil, Ferreira’s success as an artist came about serendipitously when he moved to London in his early twenties to study cinema. He began working in ceramic as a means to support his film projects in what he dubs is “a capricious industry.” As he explored the properties of porcelain ceramic and developed his own techniques and language, Ferreira found the demand for his work exceeding his wildest expectations. For Ferreira, his work is a “celebration of irregularities” that begins with small, simple shapes which are then repeated thousands of times. Ferreira works with porcelain ceramic in its purest form, rolling the material out into paper thin ... More

Pamela Moore, Tree View Wedding, 2022. Photopainting, 23 x 23 in.

MONTCLAIR, NJ.- The Montclair Art Museum announced four exciting new shows opening Saturday, September 10, 2022. Lori Field: Tiger Tarot is a multidisciplinary exhibition featuring tarot card collages the artist, Montclair native Lori Field, created during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Known for her mysterious modern-day fairytales in multiple mediums, Field employs a recurring cast of human and animal hybrids to explore themes of identity, vulnerability, and spirituality. Her characters, predominantly female or androgynous, serve as foils or narrators within the mysterious worlds of Field’s own creation. These animalistic figures also provide a means for exhibiting emotive personification and utilizing physical, animalistic traits to suggest internal, human struggles and motives. With the tiger as her talisman, Field envisions her tarot as representing a subversive and emerging feminine concept ... More

The hobby's first eight-figure item!

DALLAS, TX.- Long before bidding ended early Sunday morning, this 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card was already the world’s most valuable sports card sold at auction. Weeks ago, in fact, it raced past the previous highwater mark set by the T206 Honus Wagner that sold for $6.6 million last year. But at 12:28 a.m. CST Sunday, it became official when Heritage Auctions sold the 1952 Mantle, graded a Mint+ 9.5 by Sportscard Guaranty Corporation, for $12.6 million. This extraordinary Mantle rookie card is also more than just the most valuable sports card in the world. This Holy Grail of the hobby is also the most valuable sports collectible ever sold at auction. It surpassed the record achieved earlier this year when the jersey worn by Diego Maradona when he scored the so-called “Hand of God” goal in the 1986 World Cup sold for $9.3 million. “An eight-figure auction result in the sports market was the stuff of fantasy just a decade ag ... Ms. Oh is the inaugural recipient of the SOLO Exhibition Open Call selected from over 70 entries from local artists by the LAUNCH Advisory Board and Founder and Executive Director James Panozzo. ‘GIL’ translates to ‘path’ in Oh’s native Korean. ‘GIL’ (global interpreter lock) is a mechanism used by computer-language interpreters to synchronize the execution of threads. This mechanism is similar Oh’s art practice. As an interpreter uses GIL, they allow one thread to execute at a time on a multi-core processor. Similarly, Oh executes one section of weaving or carving at a time, even though there has to be multiple threads of wire or multiple cuts in the sculpture in several directions at a time in each piece.
