NAPLES, FLA.- ArtisNaples, The Baker Museum, opened Pam Longobardi: Ocean Gleaning on Saturday, December 18. Longobardi utilizes found ocean plastics as her primary source material, arranging hundreds of plastic pieces into meticulous wall-mounted artworks or turning them into monumental floor-based sculptures. The exhibition, featuring thought-provoking works of art that shed an unflinching light on the effects of global consumption on the natural world, will be on view through July 24. Our theme throughout the 2021-22 season is Esprit de Corps, and Ocean Gleaning reminds us of how we can each do our part to collectively protect our natural resources, said CEO and President Kathleen van Bergen. The works of art are beautiful and alluring: Upon closer inspection they reveal what they are made of, and then ask us to think about the crisis taking place in our oceans. FORT GARLAND, COLO.- On a bitter, windy day, a long-overdue reckoning took place in the commandants quarters at Fort Garland, a former military outpost turned museum and cultural center. For most of its history, the museum has celebrated frontiersman Christopher Carson, known as Kit, who briefly commanded this far-flung garrison built during the American westward expansion to protect settlers from raids by tribes. But now the museum was telling a far different story in an exhibition titled Unsilenced: Indigenous Enslavement in Southern Colorado one of the first dedicated to highlighting the little-known and centuries-old system of Indigenous bondage that historian Andrés ... VIENNA.- Huang Po-Chih (b. 1980 in Taoyuan) belongs to a generation of artists socialized in a time of democratic reform and rapid economic growth in Taiwan. After abolishing one-party rule and martial law in 1987, Taiwan transformed itself into a neoliberal, capitalist, democratically organized society. The political status of Taiwan remains contested, a consequence of the Chinese Civil War in which troops of the national Chinese Kuomintang under Chiang Kai-Shek retreated to Taiwan after their defeat and founded the Republic of China there. In the struggle with the US for dominance in the Pacific Ocean region, the Peoples Republic of China, with its aspirations of superpower status, is again making threatening gestures toward the island state of Taiwan, which has been ruled democratically since the dissolution ... ISTANBUL.- The most comprehensive exhibition of İpek Dubens work to date, spanning over forty years of her practice, is presented at SALT Beyoğlu. Referring to the artists extensive use of her body image, The Skin, Body, and I offers insight into her works, exploring gender, male violence, displacement, migration, and excessive consumption. The exhibition reevaluates Dubens entire oeuvre, from drawings and paintings made in the early 1980s to her most recent series Angels and Clowns in 2020. Comprising a single drawing and eleven paintings, Şerife (1980-1981) is the first body of work in which Duben tackled issues such as migration, perception of the other, and gender within a local context. For the headless and bodiless portraits of Şerife, who went to her sisters house to clean, the artist filled up a dress she had purchased from the street market to replace the live m ... More

Installation view of Pangolin London's Lynn Chadwick exhibition.
LONDON.- Pangolin London are presenting a museum-quality exhibition of carefully selected work by Lynn Chadwick, exploring the subliminal influences that inspired this giant of twentieth century sculpture through the decades. Lynn Chadwick is a leading figure in the history of British and European sculpture in the mid and late 20th century. Often misunderstood as not being in touch, this exhibition exposes how many of the major events of the 20th century affected and were explored by Chadwick. Indeed Chadwicks frame of reference came from a wide range of sources - from ancient to contemporary art, nature to behavioural science, and fashion to architecture. This exhibition highlights how throughout the six decades of his career, Chadwick would often change and adapt his work responding to the zeitgeist of the time. Whilst Chadwick consistently resisted talking about his works in terms of any direct influences or inspi ... More |

GLASGOW.- A major work by Alexandra Bircken, The Doctor, 2020, has been acquired for the The Hunterian, University of Glasgow, through the Valeria Napoleone XX Contemporary Art Society (VNXXCAS) initiative. The museum is receiving the work through this scheme after making a strong case for addressing the representation of women artists within their existing collections. Birken is known for her sculptures and installations, for which she draws on an unusually wide range of found materials. The human body is almost always the focus of her work, with its complex states and conditions, how it is covered and protected, and its variety of desires. The Doctor exemplifies many of these characteristic qualities of Alexandra Birckens art. Its constituent materials include a surgical gown (a souvenir of the artists own treatment for a knee injury), a section from a discarded Christmas tree (set into a prosthetic joint), ... More

More 'Cinderella' adds stardust to the Met Opera's holidayNEW YORK, NY.- What is the difference between real life and dreams, especially for an insecure young person? That poignant question is at the core of Massenets 1899 opera Cendrillon, which opened Friday at the Metropolitan Opera in English translation as Cinderella a holiday offering trimmed to 95 minutes and aimed at families. In Laurent Pellys boldly stylized production of this adaptation of Perraults fairy tale, when we meet Cinderella (the affecting mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard) she is restless and forlorn. Wearing a raggedy dress and frumpy sweater, she is treated like a lowly servant by her imperious stepmother and snide stepsisters. Left alone to ponder her fate, Cinderella sings a wistful aria, music that suggests an old folk song, and allows herself a moment to dream.
