POTSDAM.- Following its opening exhibition, the Museum Barberini presents its first international cooperation project with the exhibition From Hopper to Rothko: Americas Road to Modern Art from June 17 to October 3, 2017. For this, The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., has sent 68 works of early American modern art to Germany for the first time. American art from the first half of the twentieth century is still relatively unknown in Europe. The three central themes of the exhibition landscapes, portraits, and cityscapes present a cross-section of American painting. The show traces the beginnings of abstract painting, which also developed during this time. After 1945, this culminated in Abstract Expressionism, and New York City became the new center of the art world. Works from The Phillips Collection highlight all of these developments. The exhibition From Hopper to Rothko: Americas Road to Modern ... More |
The Best Photos of the Day The Museum of Fine Arts Bern (Kunstmuseum Bern) that will host the spectacular estate of Cornelius Gurlitt is pictured on June 15, 2017 in Swiss capital Bern. When Corneluis Gurlitt died in 2014, more than 1,500 artworks, including valuable paintings and sketches by Picasso, Monet, Chagall and other masters, were discovered at two homes he owned in Germany. Gurlitt, the son of an art dealer tasked by Adolf Hitler with helping to plunder great works from museums and Jewish collectors -- many of whom perished in the gas chambers -- left his vast collection to the Bern museum. EDINBURGH.- The revolution in painting sparked by one of the worlds most celebrated (and notorious) artists is the subject of the major summer exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh this year. Beyond Caravaggio brings a group of four important paintings by the bad boy of seventeenth-century Italian art to Scotland for the first time, and explores the extraordinary impact of his work across Europe, both during his lifetime and in the decades following his premature death. Organised in partnership with the National Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin, this is the first exhibition devoted to this theme ever to be mounted in Britain. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) is one of very few Old Master painters to enjoy genuine, broad popular appeal today, remembered not only for his brilliance, but also his challenging, ... BOSTON, MASS.- This summer, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, opened Chinas 8 Brokens: Puzzles of the Treasured Past, the first-ever museum exhibition dedicated to bapo (eight brokens) painting, a revolutionary artistic genre that emerged in China during the mid-19th century. Bapo refers to the damaged cultural ephemera hyper-realistically depicted in the worksworm-eaten calligraphies, partial book pages, burned paintings, remnants of rubbings and torn-open letters. The term eight brokens also alludes to the hidden messages of the imagesoften wishes for good fortune. Eight is a lucky number in Chinese culture, and broken, or less-than-complete, objects can also have favorable implications, since perfection could bring about misfortune. The art form was largely forgotten after 1949, but has recently been rediscovered by contemporary artists and collectors, prompting curators ... More

MUNSTER.- For almost three decades, Tom Burrs sculpture, writing, collage, and photography have focused on access, site-specificity, the confluence of public and private environments, as well as the constructed persona. With the fifth edition of Skulptur Projekte Münster as a backdrop to all of Münsters artistic and cultural endeavours in the summer of 2017, Burr chose to reflect upon this synchrony by adopting the decennials characteristic feature of adding, layering, framing, and juxtaposing artworks from different time periods. While the city of Münster is host to several artworks from the Skulptur Projekte editions of 1977 through today, Westfälischer Kunstverein presents five new sculptures by Tom Burr amidst a selection of earlier works. Appropriating the formal vocabulary of minimalism, Burr charges these seemingly neutral shapes and materials with innumerable connotations and references ... More

The Borghese-Windsor cabinet is one of the finest examples of Italian pietre dure cabinets known. Works of this quality, craftsmanship, and historical significance are almost all in museums and princely private collections, so the opportunity to acquire one of the most renowned examples for the Getty is too good to pass up, said Timothy Potts, director of the J. He first appeared on the art scene in 1967 and starting in 1968 took part in all of the major exhibitions of the minimalist scene. He also had a number of solo shows, notably at the Haus Lange Krefeld, the epicenter of the avant-garde in the 1960s. An elastic straight line stretched between the floor and the ceiling reveals no structure, no tools for maintaining itand gives the illusion of a thin rod balanced on one end. The beauty this mystery brings about endlessly fills us with wonder. The tension is gentle, not aggressive; it is induced but without being emphasized. The question of tension arises by comparing the sculpture in space with the ball of yarn it comes from. The show features six sculptures produced between ... The exhibition opened on June 15, 2017 and will remain on view through August 26, 2017. In a historical sense, the Grand Tour was a seventeenth- to eighteenth-century phenomenon in which young, usually male and aristocratic, members of English and Northern European families visited great cities and societies of the European continent. It was an educational trip, meant largely for cultural exposure and refinement. Art was central to this travel in a number of ways, from visiting masterpieces of painting and architecture, to commissioning portraits, buying art to bring home, and engaging an artist ... He further explained that pelicans are the closest living animals to pterodactyls, and that they can be found up and down the coast of California. At the time, he had just started working on a sculpture of a pelican with Michael Curry, who designed animal puppets for the Broadway musical The Lion King. Alex wanted this sculpture to be suspended in the air, and its flight to be manually activated by the viewers.
