In this file photo taken on October 16, 2012, an empty space is seen where a painting by French artist Henri Matisse was stolen at the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam, a day after seven masterpieces were stolen in a pre-dawn heist. One of seven paintings stolen six years ago from the museum in The Netherlands as part of a spectacular art heist may have been found in Romania, the public prosector in Bucharest said on November 18, 2018. Public prosecutor Augustin Lazar confirmed to AFP that Romanian authorities were in possession of a painting that "might be" one of those stolen from the Kunsthal Museum, adding it needs to be further examined. Sources told AFP that experts are checking if the canvas is Picasso's "Harlequin Head". ROBIN UTRECHT / ANP / AFP. THE HAGUE (AFP).- A writer who thought she had found a painting by Pablo Picasso stolen in an infamous art heist six years ago said Sunday she was the victim of a "publicity stunt", Dutch media reported. Picasso's "Harlequin Head" was one of seven celebrated paintings snatched from the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam in 2012 during a daring robbery local media dubbed "the theft of the century". The artworks by Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, Matisse and Lucian Freud have not been seen since. But Dutch writer Mira Feticu, who wrote a novel based on the brazen heist, thought she had uncovered the piece after she was sent an anonymous letter around 10 days ago "with instructions regarding the place where the painting was hidden" in Romania. Feticu, of Romanian origin, told AFP the tip-off led her to a forest in the east of the country where she dug up an artwork wrapped in plastic. Romanian authorities, who were handed the canvas on Saturday night, said that it "might be" Picasso's painting, which is esti ... More |
The Best Photos of the Day The North Carolina Museum of Art moved a Standing Hanukkah Lamp to the entrance of their West Building, making it the first object a visitor sees when walking in, in memorial of those killed in the October 27 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. This ceremonial work of art was once owned by a Jewish couple in Pittsburgh. In the Judaic Art Gallery, in the place of this lamp, hangs a torn black cloth; in Jewish tradition, mourners at a funeral rend their garments as an expression of grief.

| Exhibition offers a representative overview of Alejandra Seeber's current work | | Missing St Mark mosaic finally returns to Cyprus | | Looters plunder Albania's sunken treasures | Alejandra Seeber, Future alberguen, 2018. Oil on canvas, 86 x 74 cm / 33 7/8 x 29 1/8 inches. Courtesy: Gary Kuehn and Häusler Contemporary München | Zürich. MUNICH.- Häusler Contemporary is presenting the third solo exhibition of Alejandra Seeber in Munich. The Argentinean painter, known for her refreshing use of the traditional medium, presents selected works of the past two years and embeds them in a vast, painterly concept that was created especially for the gallery. In her paintings, artist Alejandra Seeber (*1968, Buenos Aires, AR, lives in New York, US) explores the painterly possibilities between figuration and abstraction in her paintings. Their ambivalent imagery cannot be decoded on a linear path, since in her colorful shining paintings, out of nonrepresentational elements, narrative references suddenly emerge. There are allusions to subjects that dissolve instantly into expressive chromaticity and gestural dynamics. These dichotomies and the encounter of different motives let her works become many-faceted and surprising. Seebers new exhibition at Häusler Contemporary ... Jan HENNOP / AFP. THE HAGUE (AFP).- One of the last missing pieces of Byzantine art stolen from Cyprus in the 1970s was handed back this week by a renowned, and proud Dutch art investigator. Arthur Brand said Friday he handed back the sixth century depiction of Saint Mark during a private ceremony at the Cypriot embassy in The Hague. For Brand, dubbed the "Indiana Jones of the art world" because of his exploits to recover stolen works, the handover was a highpoint in his life-long interest in the Byzantine saint -- and the result of a nearly two-year chase across Europe. "This is a very special piece that's more than 1,600 years old. It's one of the last and most beautiful examples of art from the early Byzantine era," said the art sleuth. He showed AFP the mosaic hours before it was handed back. The Cypriot embassy and Church of Cyprus declined to comment when asked about the mosaic and the Cypriot Department of Antiquities ... Gent SHKULLAKU / AFP. VLORA (AFP).- Albania's long underexplored coastal waters have become a hotspot for treasure hunters scooping up ancient pottery, sunken ship parts and other shell-encrusted relics that have lain on the seabed for centuries. The 450-kilometre (280-mile) coastline, which is lapped by the Adriatic and Ionian seas, was off-limits under the communist regime which ruled the Balkan state until 1990, with orders to shoot anyone caught diving without authorisation. But today its waters are open, luring archaeologists but also looters eager to plumb the new territory and sell their finds on the art and metals markets. "Much of this wealth resting at the depth of 20-30 metres (66-99 feet) is easily accessible without any special equipment and has almost completely disappeared without a trace," said Albanian archaeologist and art historian Neritan Ceka, among those calling for urgent ... | Giant Damien Hirst uterus sculptures catch eye at Qatar hospital | | Hauser & Wirth New York exhibits new and recent works by Anna Maria Maiolino | | Recently discovered portrait by Piet Mondrian offered at the PAN art and Antique Fair in Amsterdam | Workers operate on "The Miraculous Journey", an art installation by artist Damien Hirst outside the Sidra Medical & Research Centre in Qatar's capital Doha, on the day of their unveiling on October 10, 2018. STRINGER / AFP. DOHA (AFP).- Fourteen giant bronze sculptures by British artist Damien Hirst graphically charting the moment of conception to birth greet patients arriving at an $8-billion hospital in Gulf state Qatar. The vast open-air installation, named "The Miraculous Journey", shows a foetus growing in the womb and culminates with a 14-metre (46-feet) of a naked baby just after birth. The monumental work is the centrepiece of an impressive modern art collection at the Sidra Medicine Hospital, officially opened this week in Doha, that would be the envy of many galleries around the world. "We believe it reflects very much the mission of Sidra, taking care of the healthcare of woman and babies," said Layla Ibrahim Bacha, art specialist with the government-supported Qatar Foundation, which owns most of the artwork. "I think it's perfect for the location, as you can see a lot of people are taking pictures, I think its becoming iconic." ... NEW YORK, NY.- Hauser & Wirth is presenting ERRÂNCIA POÉTICA (POETIC WANDERINGS), a solo exhibition of new and recent works by Anna Maria Maiolino, one of the most significant artists working in Brazil today. For over five decades, Maiolino has drawn from her personal history as an artist, migrant, and mother, to produce works that relentlessly challenge accepted notions of desire, language, and sexuality while celebrating the viscerality of embodied experience. On view from 14 November through 22 December 2018, the exhibition highlights multiple dimensions within Maiolinos oeuvre, presenting more than fifty of the artists sculptures, drawings, paintings, photographs, and videos, as well as a new site-specific installation that continues her iconic Terra Modelada (Modeled Earth) series. | Narrative, cinema and suburbia in the work of Miles Aldridge and Todd Hido explored at Huxley-Parlour Gallery | | Ruiz-Healy Art opens a solo exhibition of the work of Hills Snyder | | Calixto Bieito brings his 'film noir' to Paris Opera | #7373, 2008 © Todd Hido courtesy Huxley-Parlour Gallery. LONDON.- A new exhibition, This Side of Paradise: Narrative, Cinema and Suburbia in the Work of Miles Aldridge and Todd Hido presents twenty large-scale colour works demonstrating how these two contemporary artists investigate the concept of suburbia. Though works by Aldridge and Hido are visually dissimilar, both artists are recognisable for their distinctive cinematic colour palettes, lighting and compositions, and the suggestion of narrative possibilities beyond the edge of the frame. Whereas Hido presents a shadowy, empty, exterior suburban world, Aldridge presents the viewer with brightly lit, garish interiors, focusing on the imagined lives of the women who inhabit them. Hidos works in the exhibition are from his ongoing Houses at Night series, depicting isolated suburban homes in America, photographed at night, replete with voyeuristic undertones ... PARIS (AFP).- Spain's Calixto Bieito built his reputation by shattering operatic norms, but his new production of "Simon Boccanegra" in Paris shows the restrained side of a director more known for performances featuring sex, blood and violence. "I don't have a formula that I use each time in every opera," Bieito told AFP in an interview as his interpretation of the Verdi work premiered at the Opera Bastille this past week. "I have different facets," he said. The 55-year-old Catalan native, once described as the "Quentin Tarantino of opera," has for years staged some of the most outlandish and controversial reworkings of the classics. His torrid "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, which has been staged in different cities over the past 20 years, has been branded both "vulgar" and "brilliant", depending on the critic. Oil on canvas, 60 3/8 x 40 3/8 in. NEW YORK, NY.- Gerald Peters Gallery is presenting the exhibition, Max Weber: Becoming Modern. Spanning the years 1905 to 1930, the paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures that make up the exhibition explore Webers transformation from art student to arbiter of the avant-garde. Weber arrived in Paris in 1905 and enrolled at the Académies Julian and Colarossi, pursuing a traditional, academic course of study. He left Paris four years later an avant-garde artist, an acolyte of Matisse, Picasso, Cézanne, and Rousseau, determined to change the course of art in the United States. By 1930, Weber had become a superstar, with a retrospective that year at MOMA, the first that institution had devoted to an American artist. Webers rise to stardom, however, was not marked by an easy line of successes, but rather by a trail of baffled critics, financial hardship, and a public whose tastes and perceptions were years behind Webers evolved ...
