HONG KONG.- Christies will offer one of the worlds rarest Chinese paintings by Su Shi (1037-1101) the pre-eminent scholar of the Song Dynasty and one of the most important figures in Chinese history. The painting, Wood and Rock, will lead Christies Hong Kong Autumn Sale 2018. This is an ink-on-paper scroll which depicts withered tree branches standing dignified alongside a curiously-shaped rock, resembling, as one renowned critic put it, giant creatures and dragons appearing and disappearing from stormy seas. MADRID (AFP).- It was too good to be true. A mural sporting Banksy's alleged signature in a declining town in northwestern Spain that had caused a sensation when it appeared overnight in April is not by the legendary street artist, his website said Friday. The cheeky, stencilled image of two Guardia Civil police kissing had appeared on a white wall that had been "reserved for Banksy" in Ferrol, where a street art festival set up in 2008 to breathe new life into a dying neighbourhood takes place every year. NAIROBI (AFP).- In a room that is both home and studio, Evans Ngure works on a sculpture, a fantastical fish fabricated from found objects: wooden spoons, broken scissors and an old machete. Long before upcycling became a hipster mantra, Ngure turned his Nairobi apartment into a workshop, and junk into art, his choice of artistic expression echoing a necessary developing world culture of re-use. After trying his hand at painting and graphic design, Ngure became a "junk artist" as an act of reciprocity and community. A Nomads Art: Kilims of Anatolia features 18th and 19th-century examples of majestic textiles known as kilims, which were woven to protect and adorn tents and camel caravans. The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 23. Kilims are the most enduring records of life in nomadic communities in Anatolia, part of modern-day Turkey.
