CHICAGO, IL.- The Art Institute of Chicago opened Project A Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica on view from December 15, 2024 through March 30, 2025. This is the first major exhibition to survey Pan-Africanismâs widespread influence on art and culture. The exhibition gathers more than 350 objects, spanning from the 1920s to the present by artists on four continents: Africa, North America, South America, and Europe. Pan-Africanism, first named and theorized around 1900, is commonly regarded as an umbrella term for political movements that have advanced the call for individual self-determination and global unity among peoples of African descent. ESPOO.- EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art has received a donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation to acquire a series of paintings by the Danish visual artist Poul Gernes. The donation of 2.5 million Danish kroner (approximately 330,000), has enabled the purchase of this multi-part artwork, which will be showcased at EMMA in 2025, marking the artists centenary. The donation presented to EMMA is a great example of the New Carlsberg Foundation's support for the acquisition of Danish art internationally. With the donation, EMMA has acquired Untitled (Stripe series with red and blue as recurring colours) (1966) by Poul Gernes (19251996). This series consists of 15 paintings, each measuring 122 x 122 cm, featuring combinations of three differently coloured stripes. The suspension of disbelief is a concept introduced by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his work Biographia Literaria in 1817. This term refers to a readers ability to unquestioningly accept fantastic or unrealistic elements within a work of fiction. According to Coleridge, readers can become wholly immersed in the narrative by pausing their critical faculties, accepting certain situations or creatures normally considered impossible, such as unicorns or magical worlds, as possible. George Rodrigue (March 13, 1944 - December 14, 2013) was an American artist originally from New Iberia, Louisiana, who in the late 1960s began painting Louisiana landscapes, followed soon after by outdoor family gatherings and southwest Louisiana 19th-century and early 20th-century genre scenes. His paintings often include moss-clad oak trees, which are common to an area of French Louisiana known as Acadiana.
