Irish dance for all levels, all bodies, all genders
NEW YORK, NY.- Under the multicolored lights of a Brooklyn pub on a recent Monday night, a small crowd skipped and swung in circles, scrambling to keep up with the tempo of an Irish reel. Some were seasoned professionals; others were dipping a toe into Irish social dancing for the first time. People came close to colliding as they advanced and retreated in rows of four, hands linked, or spun with partners in the tightly packed space. A formation that was supposed to resemble a square, with one couple stationed neatly on each side, wound up looking more like a wavy half-circle. Faces were flushed with confusion and joy. In Irish dance, a form known for its upright posture and exacting rhythmic footwork — as well as its culture of high-pressure competition — precision is prized. But perfection is beside the point at Gayli, a series of LGBTQ-friendly ... More

Colorful abstract paintings continues Kim DeJesus's exploration of memory
LOS ANGELES, CA.- William Turner Gallery is showing a debut solo exhibition for Kim DeJesus, entitled Letter to a Memory. This new series of colorful abstract paintings continues the artist’s exploration of memory - delving into those aspects of life that can be controlled and those that cannot. “I often perceive my painting practice as a series of letters, or messages to my inner self or the past, and that my paintings are a letter to myself, a record of a moment in life, merging a lived experience I’ve had with the present moment”, DeJesus says. In these fluidly inventive paintings, DeJesus employs additive and subtractive gestures to elicit complex, visual tensions. Fragmented compositions mirror the complexities of memory and the elusive nature of self- understanding, as the artist seeks to unravel the interconnectedness of memories and the disjointed ... Down the rabbit hole in search of a few frames of Irish American history
NEW YORK, NY.- One moment I am sprawled on a couch in my New Jersey home, lost in another classic old movie. The next, I am falling through the floorboards and tumbling like Alice into the wondrous unknown, only to land in a bunkerlike government structure built into the side of a Virginia mountain. Yes, I had gone down a rabbit hole, down into the black-hole past. As I plummeted, I learned about “lost” movies, an unlikely box office star, a secure facility where national memories are stored — and a silent film whose comic Irish stereotypes once caused uproars in theaters. My descent began as I watched “Dinner at Eight,” a 1933 classic featuring several early MGM luminaries, including Marie Dressler, a stout actor in her early 60s whose impeccable timing and weary resilience had made her the biggest star in Hollywood. Depression-era audiences ... More

A Broadway-bound 'Sunset Boulevard' leads Olivier Award nominations
LONDON.- A revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard,” starring Nicole Scherzinger as a former screen idol descending into madness, received the most nominations Tuesday for this year’s Olivier Awards, Britain’s equivalent of the Tonys. The show, which ran at the Savoy Theater in London and will transfer to Broadway this year, is in the running for 11 awards — two more than any other play or musical — including best musical revival, best actress in a musical for Scherzinger and best director for Jamie Lloyd. When the production opened in the fall, it impressed London’s often demanding theater critics. Matt Wolf, writing in The New York Times, said the production was, like its lead character, “a bit mad: reckless and daring, stretching its source material to the limit and beyond.” “I can’t imagine another London show generating ... A comic scene-stealer, six decades in the making
HUDSON VALLEY, NY.- Breastchester, the rustic upstate New York residence that is home to the “Girls5eva” star Paula Pell, is a two-hour drive from Manhattan, at the end of a long stretch of road where occasional yoga studios and art galleries eventually give way to a tranquil countryside. It is secluded, but its proprietor is hardly in need of companionship. Pell’s coterie here includes her wife, Janine Brito, a comedy writer-actor who gave their mini-estate its body-positive nickname. Then there is the congregation of rescue dogs that had overtaken the living room of the main house one recent Friday morning, all scratching and barking for attention. Eloise and Verbena, Pell’s horses, were in a stable on a hill above the house. “There’s two old mares up there and one old mare down here,” Pell said theatrically, running a hand through her long silver locks. ... For some mammals, large adult daughters, not sons, are the norm
NEW YORK, NY.- Female elephant seals are not delicate creatures. They are rippling tubes of muscle and blubber that can weigh more than 1,000 pounds. Still, female elephant seals are absolutely dwarfed by their male counterparts, which are typically at least three times heavier. It is an extreme case of what is known as sexual size dimorphism, and one that fits within a long-standing narrative that male mammals tend to be larger than female ones. A new analysis of a diverse array of more than 400 mammalian species paints a more complex picture. Males outweigh females in 45% of mammalian species, scientists found. But in nearly as many — 39% — both sexes are the same mass. And in 16% of species, females are the heavier sex. “What we found is that there is no norm,” said Kaia Tombak, a postdoctoral researcher at Purdue ... More
