PARIS (AFP).- A copy of Marcel Proust's "Swann's Way" which he dedicated to his "little darling", sold for 1.51 million euros ($1.7 million) in Paris Friday -- a world record for a French book, auction house Sotheby's said. The rare copy of the first volume of the French writer's masterpiece, "Remembrance of Things Past", had been expected to go for between 600,000 and 800,000 euros. It smashed the previous record for a piece of French literature held by the poet Charles Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du mal" ("The Flowers of Evil"), a copy of which sold for 775,000 euros nine years ago. NICOSIA (AFP).- Archaeologists working to excavate a 2,400-year-old shipwreck off Cyprus have gained insights into the evolution of ancient boat-building technology in the Mediterranean, authorities said Wednesday. The ship which sank off Mazotos on the island's south coast in the middle of the 4th century BC is thought to be one of the region's best-preserved wrecks. "After careful study of the excavated timbers, a very important element of shipbuilding technology has already come to light: both ligatures and mortise-and-tenons were used to join the garboard, the stem post and the keel," the Cyprus antiquities department said. Evidence found on the ship, which went down carrying jars of wine, was linked to two prominent seafaring people, the Greeks and the Phoenicians, the department said in a statement. LONDON (AFP).- A statue of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst was inaugurated on Friday in the northern English city Manchester, to mark the centenary of the first election in which women -- aged over 30 -- were allowed to vote. Pankhurst (1858-1928), who was from Manchester, founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903 and became the most prominient activist for female suffrage of the era. She campaigned alongside her three daughters -- Christabel, Adela and Sylvia -- and was imprisoned and released eleven times. The statue, created by sculptor Hazel Reeves, depicts the activist standing on a chair making a speech, her right arm outstretched. BOSTON, MASS.- A prototype Apollo A7L lunar boot created for Neil Armstrong sold for $49,000 according to Boston-based RR Auction. The boot was manufactured by International Latex Corporation (ILC) in Dover, Delaware, around late 1968 or early 1969, with inner liner featuring a stitched Beta cloth name-tag marked: Armstrong. The prototype boot measures approximately 8″ inches tall, 12.75″ inches long, and 5.5″ inches wide, and includes its light blue silicon moon boot tread. The construction of the boot consists of the aluminized Mylar insulation layers with gold-tone Kapton tape and liner material bearing a large stitched R, characteristics in keeping with the configuration of an Apollo-era lunar boot. LOS ANGELES, CA.- The December 11 sale of Native American Art was led by an exceptional Tlingit rattle, circa 1770-1790, which realized $504,500 (estimate: $100,000-150,000). Attributed to Kadjisdu.axch, the greatest carver of wood among the Tlingit people, this rattle is expertly carved in the form of an oystercatcher with several figures including an eagle, a bear, and a wolf. This work was originally collected by Dr. Hugh S. Wyman (1858-1913), an Assistant Surgeon aboard the U.S.S. Pinta, stationed in Sitka, along with fellow officer and noted ethnographer George T. Emmons in 1884. After resigning his Navy commission in 1885, Wyman remained in Alaska until 1899, residing on Douglas Island and Juneau before moving his practice to Olympia, Washington.
