NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE.- The Laing Art Gallerys new exhibition, The Enchanted Garden, explores the garden as a stage for the extraordinary, the magical, the atmospheric and the nostalgic and casts new light on the work of the our best-loved artists. From the Pre-Raphaelites and French Impressionists to the Bloomsbury Group and 20th century abstraction, artists have taken inspiration directly from the gardens around them - whether small or large, manicured or wild. These secret, enveloping and sometimes mysterious spaces are seen through windows, in panoramas and often repeated in different lights and seasons - a less constrained space to set human dramas. Sir Alfred Gilbert, R.A., Queen Victoria, 1887-1889, marble © Sotheby's.
CAMBRIDGE.- Sir Alfred Gilbert's little known masterpiece a virtuoso monumental white marble bust of Queen Victoria as an ageing monarch has been saved for the nation after the Fitzwilliam Museum raised the necessary £1,077,607 to prevent it being exported to a museum in New York. This majestic marble monolith is arguably the most impressive and sensitive portrait ever made of the iconic and oft-portrayed Queen-Empress, without doubt one of the most important women in British history. It is a pivotal work in the development of British sculpture at the end of the nineteenth century and is entirely carved by Gilbert; the most talented and idiosyncratic sculptor of Victorian Britain. It is the only surviving marble by Gilbert in the UK. The Fitzwilliam devoted the recent Hartley-Johnson Bequest to this acquisition of international significance along with gifts from individual benefactors. The shortfall was generously met by ... NEW YORK, NY.- Ulterior Gallery is presenting Grip, an exhibition by Camel Collective, the artistic partnership of Anthony Graves and Carla Herrera-Prats. Sculpture, drawings, and a sound piece together explore the idea of labor as it relates to the artists practice. The exhibition opened on June 16 and remains on view through July 15. Works in Grip signal aspects of behind-the-scenes labor that are ubiquitous in the artistic sphere, gesturing at an erotics of touch and feeling that constitute our primary motivation for labora motivation sadly truncated and distorted by the work we are often coerced into for money, gain, or sheer survival. Anchoring the exhibition is a lead and steel sculpture, As seamless as possible, that foregrounds the physical labor that is often subsumed, forgotten, and rendered invisible beneath the patina of a finished product. Shirley Baker, Manchester, 1966 © Estate of Shirley Baker, Courtesy of The Photographers Gallery.
LONDON.- The Print Sales Gallery presents 27 rare vintage and lifetime prints from the personal collection of pioneering British photographer Shirley Baker (1932- 2014). The exhibition features both increasingly rare signature images and new and unseen works. Thought to be the only woman practicing street photography in Britain during the post-war era, Shirley Bakers humanist documentary work traced communities in the North West of England throughout the 1950s, 60s and into the 80s. Bakers passion for photography is perhaps best epitomised by her depictions of the daily life of the working class terraced streets in Salford and Manchester, which despite receiving little attention at the time, still remain important and empathetic documents of the urban clearance programmes and the resilience of communities under siege. This twenty-year period saw her evolve her ideas of documentary form and subject matter. ... More | |

The family said Earl Brosnahan had been in failing health. Mourners gathered at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Redemptorist Church on a rainy, dark afternoon, but The Kansas City Star reported that some of Spade's school friends carried signature handbags of the designer whose use of bright colors and prints proved a hit with career women.
