AMSTERDAM.- This summers exhibition in the Rijksmuseum Gardens features nine giant sculptures by the Spanish Basque artist Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002). Chillida is considered to be one of the most important post-war innovators in sculpture. He became famous chiefly for his huge sculptures in steel. For the first time, nine of Chillidas monumental outdoor sculptures are being exhibited together in the Netherlands. The works are on loan from the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Eduardo Chillida-Pilar Belzunce Foundation in Hernani, Ordovas in London and a private collection. BENTONVILLE, ARK.- Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art announces the opening of the newly designed Modern Art Galleries. The two enclosed spaces are situated on the north bridge and feature a variety of Modern works from Crystal Bridges permanent collection as well as the Alfred Stieglitz Collection. Both galleries will be ready for viewing on June 23. Following the opening of the newly designed Early American Galleries in March, the Modern Art Galleries have been reinstalled to incorporate a range of artworks and perspectives. AMSTERDAM.- The Rijksmuseum and the Asian Arts Society in the Netherlands (VVAK) have joined forces to acquire a rare 15th-century painting by the Chinese artist Ye Shuangshi. Silver Pheasants under Spring Blossoms represents the very pinnacle of Chinese painting, and its acquisition is the highlight of this years centenary celebrations for the VVAK, whose collection is housed in the Rijksmuseum. To mark the 100th anniversary of the VVAKs foundation, an exhibition will be held in the Rijksmuseums Asian Pavilion featuring the most outstanding objects in its collection. CAMBRIDGE.- Sir Alfred Gilbert's little known masterpiece a virtuoso monumental white marble bust of Queen Victoria as an ageing monarch has been saved for the nation after the Fitzwilliam Museum raised the necessary £1,077,607 to prevent it being exported to a museum in New York. This majestic marble monolith is arguably the most impressive and sensitive portrait ever made of the iconic and oft-portrayed Queen-Empress, without doubt one of the most important women in British history. It is a pivotal work in the development of British sculpture at the end of the nineteenth century and is entirely carved by Gilbert; the most talented and idiosyncratic sculptor of Victorian Britain. LONDON.- The Print Sales Gallery presents 27 rare vintage and lifetime prints from the personal collection of pioneering British photographer Shirley Baker (1932- 2014). The exhibition features both increasingly rare signature images and new and unseen works. Thought to be the only woman practicing street photography in Britain during the post-war era, Shirley Bakers humanist documentary work traced communities in the North West of England throughout the 1950s, 60s and into the 80s. Bakers passion for photography is perhaps best epitomised by her depictions of the daily life of the working class terraced streets in Salford and Manchester, which despite receiving little attention at the time, still remain important and empathetic documents of the urban clearance programmes and the resilience of communities under siege. CHICAGO (AFP).- Friends and loved ones said goodbye Thursday to American fashion designer Kate Spade at a funeral in Kansas City, Missouri, birthplace of the 55-year-old who committed suicide two weeks ago. Spade was one of the biggest names in American fashion, known especially for her sleek handbags. An additional tragedy befell the family hours before the late-afternoon service, as Spade's "heartbroken" 89-year-old father died at his home in the Midwestern US city. The family said Earl Brosnahan had been in failing health. Mourners gathered at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Redemptorist Church on a rainy, dark afternoon, but The Kansas City Star reported that some of Spade's school friends carried signature handbags of the designer whose use of bright colors and prints proved a hit with career women.
