GLENS FALLS, NY.- Jordan D. Schnitzer collects the works of more than 900 artists, but when he stands in a room with artwork by Ellsworth Kelly, it is as though the rest of the world fades away. KANSAS CITY, MO.- A new exhibition featuring works by some of the most well-known American photographers of the 1930s will be on display at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. Dignity vs. Despair: Dorothea Lange and Depression-Era Photographers, 1933-1941 opens June 23 and includes iconic images by five photographers: Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Arthur Rothstein, Marion Post Wolcott, and Peter Sekaer. It is the first Depression-era exhibition at the Nelson-Atkins. Beautiful, rare and vintage bottles perform well at Holabird's June 16-17 auction
RENO, NEV.- An 1800s H. T. Tobin Western pumpkinseed pint whiskey flask, produced for the Walla Walla Saloon when Washington was still a territory and not yet a state, sold for $4,840 at an auction held June 16th-17th by Holabird Western Americana Collections, LLC, as part of the 53rd annual Reno Bottle Show & Auction, held at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno. It is quite possible that this is a new auction record price realized for a clear Western whiskey flask. The two-session auction featured a premier selection of rare and vintage bottles headlined by the Ralph Van Brocklin collection of Western whiskey flasks and the Rod Stock Hutchinson bottle collection. William Cordova named the recipient of the 2017 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art
ORLANDO, FLA.- William Cordova has been named the 2017 recipient of the Orlando Museum of Art Florida Prize in Contemporary Art. The three jurors of the exhibition were Dan L. Hess, a visual artist based in Central Florida; Katherine Navarro, Associate Curator of Education at The Mennello Museum of American Art; and Joanna Robotham, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Tampa Museum of Art. Robotham said It was a pleasure to serve as a juror for the 2017 Florida Prize. Hansen Mulford selected an extraordinary group of artists for the exhibition, each remarkable in their own right. Flashback On a day like today, Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo died June 24, 1899. Rufino Tamayo (August 26, 1899 ? June 24, 1991) was a Mexican painter of Zapotec heritage, born in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico. Tamayo was active in the mid-20th century in Mexico and New York, painting figurative abstraction with surrealist influences. In this image: Rufino Tamayo's painting "Sandias" or "Watermelons'' is seen in this undated picture. Mexico put out an international alert Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999 for 12 paintings that were stolen from an exhibition last week, including "Sandias" by one of Mexico's most famous painters. The paintings, on loan from private art collectors in Mexico, the United States and Europe, were part of a 43-canvas show the gallery organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tamayo's birth.
