NEW YORK, NY.- Sothebys 19 April 2016 auction of Magnificent Jewels in New York will be led by a 9.54-carat Fancy Deep Blue diamond ring owned by Shirley Temple throughout her long life from a child star lifting Americas spirits out of the Great Depression, to her decades of service as an American diplomat (then Shirley Temple Black). Shirley Temples father purchased the diamond ring in early 1940, around the time of her 12th birthday as well as the premier of her film The Blue Bird. That film may have served as inspiration for purchasing a blue stone specifically, as colored diamonds were not as coveted at the time as they are in todays market*. The traditional cushion-cut stone remained in Shirley Temples collection until her passing in 2014, and it is offered this spring in its original Art Deco-inspired setting. Temples father paid $7,210 for the ring in 1940. ... More |

CHATSWORTH.- Two extremely rare and important 17th century English tapestries will be going back on display at Chatsworth from March 19 following an intensive two-year conservation programme. The important Mortlake Tapestries from the 1630s represent the birth of the English tapestry industry and are based on Renaissance painter Raphael's cartoons of Acts of the Apostles. As well as the panel depicting 'Healing of the Lame Man', another section was found folded back behind the seam of the tapestry when the lining was removed. Cambodia a canvas for North Korea's grand mastersSIEM REAP (AFP).- In a vast parking lot outside Cambodia's famed Angkor Wat temples complex stands a new museum built by North Korea, part of a lucrative charm offensive by a hermit state exporting its monumental art to a handful of foreign allies. "They really feel like they are back in the time of Angkor", he added, referring to the world heritage site which comprises the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, dating from the 9th to the 15th centuries.
