Photos: Kesselhaus Josephsohn. PARIS.- Following the retrospective dedicated to Hans Josephsohns work at the Musée dArt Moderne de Paris last year the artists first retrospective in France Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Marais presents an exhibition retracing 50 years of the Swiss sculptors practice, from 1952 to 2002. Spanning Josephsohns key sculptural typologies, the ground floor of the gallery brings his tender, solitary early standing and reclining figures into conversation with the abstract volumes of his late half-figures, while the walls of the first-floor space become home to a focused presentation of the artists reliefs. Josephsohns practice is characterised by his lifelong preoccupation with the human figure and by a process in intense union with his medium, both of which are central to all the works on view. The exhibition looks back over his stylistic development over five decades, bearing witness to several stylistic periods which correspond, broadly, to his shift ... More |

Emma Stern's 'Hell is Hot' opens at Almine Rech Paris, Turenne | | Laura Lima's unique performance art comes to New York | | Paul McCartney exhibits photographs taken during rise of Beatlemania | Emma Stern Lucy (flame thrower), 2025. Oil on canvas, 147.3 x 182.9 cm. 58 x 72 in. PARIS.- Almine Rech Paris, Turenne is presenting Hell is Hot, Emma Stern's third solo exhibition with the gallery, on view from April 26 to June 7, 2025. A to-watch list titled: She had sex with WHAT? Sea creatures, sultry bodiless voices, all-seeing angels and motorbikes between the legsall revved up and swallowed by girly ardor. AI-generated videos of tiny humanoids swept up in muscled, demonic arms. In these videos, the moment of contact is where their bodiesso sculpted, so solidtremble and melt, meeting the limit of where a haphazard intelligence understands the contact of flesh on flesh. In Emma Sterns paintings, the edges hold: they gleam with the fullness of freaky desire. Dimorphic idealisms of snatched waists and anti- gravity T&A are morphed into adorable monsters sporting bunny ears and mermaid tails. Sculpted in 3D software favoured by amateur pornographers then finely painted in oils in cyber-sunset hues, Sterns ... More | | Laura Lima, Balé Literal; Balerina #3, 2025. NEW YORK, NY.- Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is presenting Balé Literal, Laura Lima's third solo exhibition with the gallery, and the fourth iteration of Balé Literal (Literal Ballet). Balé Literal is an exhibition in motion objects and artworks dance through the space in a choreographed movement of the absurd. Hanging from a pulley system, the objects (or ballerinas) glide and bounce across the gallery, powered by the energy of a cyclist on a modified bike apparatus. Under the direction of the artist, the objects, lighting, musical score, support team, and pulley system function like a living organism: evolving, adapting, and moving in perfect synchrony. Through a series of cut-out windows, viewers can peek backstage, where the ballerinas prepare and wait for their act. The sound and lighting theatrics, controlled simultaneously by the cyclist, create particular moods and atmospheres which transform the objects into living beings. Collaboration and communication from one body ... More | | Paul McCartney, Self-portraits in a mirror at the George V Hotel, Paris, January 1964 (detail) © Paul McCartney. Oil on board, 20 x 16 in. NEW YORK, NY.- Hirschl & Adler Modern opened an exhibition of early works by American Abstract Expressionist painter Franz Kline (19101962). The installation features more than 20 paintings and works on paper from 1940 to 1950, before Kline débuted his large-scale black-and-white canvases in his first solo exhibition at the Charles Egan Gallery, New York, in 1950. Franz Kline is celebrated for his powerfully gestural black-and-white paintings incorporating abstract motifs and physical brushwork. Less known, however, is the stylistic experimentation that preceded and, in some ways, presaged the artists now iconic work. This exhibition focuses on the imagery Kline produced prior to his affiliation with New York School artists Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Hans Hoffman, and Philip Guston. Originally trained as a figurative painter, Kline was an exceptional draftsman. Unlike other post-war Abstract Expressionists who sought out European precedents, Kline embraced the ... A work of pure visual photography, Junk: America in Ruins (Damiani Books, 2025) features images of more than 80 American cars, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, that Lyon discovered in forgotten junkyards on travels through Nebraska, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma. For this exhibition, Crowner foregrounds abstract colour fields and juxtaposes hard and soft, reflective and absorbent, surfaces. Five wool embroidered works from 2025 mark a new development in the artists practice. At first glance, they appear to be monochromatic canvases, each composed from a vibrating expanse of colour.
