PARIS.- The Guimet museum transports visitors into the opulent world of the Ming imperial court and invites them to discover the refinement and protocols of the art of women’s jewellery. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse of the delicacy and splendour of some of China’s greatest gold masterpieces, unique and intricate objects which could be found both in the Forbidden City and the palaces of the wealthy elite. Thanks to pieces on loan from the Qujiang Museum of Fine Arts (Xi’an, China) and their exceptional collection of vases and ornaments, the Guimet museum is presenting an exhibition of gold objects and jewellery created during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). This stunning collection reflects the splendour and unparalleled refinement of gold craftsmanship and the art of jewellery during a golden era of Chinese civilisation. Gold has been considered a symbol of wealth and social status since High Antiquity, much like bronze, jade and silk. However, unlike silver, which became ... More

The book emerges as a retrospective and a continuation of Ren Hang’s legacy.

NEW YORK, NY.- Ren Hang’s artistic brilliance and human vulnerability have always stood at the forefront of his photography, which blends the intimate, the provocative, and the deeply poetic. With Ren Hang — At Work, Peter Coeln and dienacht Publishing provide an exquisite tribute to the late artist, offering a rare glimpse into his creative process during a unique photoshoot in Vienna. ST. MORITZ.- Vito Schnabel Gallery is presenting The Neverending Story: The Dream. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the publication of the Manifesto of Surrealism, the exhibition demonstrates the importance of the movement and its ongoing relevance for so many artists working today. In his landmark 1924 polemic Manifesto of Surrealism, artist-philosopher André Breton proclaimed: “If the depths of our mind contain within it strange forces capable of augmenting those on the surface, or of waging a victorious battle against them, there is every reason to seize them…It is not the fear of madness which will oblige us to leave the flag of imagination furled. The case against the realistic attitude demands to be examined.” In 2024, a century after these words were published, artists continue to grapple with and interpret their encounters with the realm of the uncanny that ... LILLE.- The Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille is presenting a groundbreaking exhibition, Expérience Raphaël, offering visitors an extraordinary opportunity to witness the entirety of its Raphael drawing collection. This treasure, gifted by the painter and collector Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1762–1834), features 40 breathtakingly delicate sheets, rarely displayed due to their fragility. Complemented by renowned paintings, the exhibition traces the illustrious career of Raphael, the Renaissance genius, from his earliest commissions in 1500 to his untimely death in 1520. Following the success of Expérience Goya in 2021 and La Forêt Magique in 2022, this marks the final installment in the museum's augmented exhibition series. Visitors can engage with digital tools that illuminate Raphael’s creative process, exploring how his sketches evolved into monumental paintings and frescoes. The exhibition centers on 43 ... More

Photo of Vincent Valdez.

HOUSTON, TX.- Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) is presenting Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream…, the artist’s first museum survey, and the first time CAMH has dedicated the entire museum to a single artist. Co-organized by CAMH and Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), the exhibition spans over two decades of his work, from early career drawings to recent monumental portraits. Just a Dream… cements Valdez as one of the most important American painters working today— imaging his country and its people, politics, pride, and foibles. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Valdez began painting murals at age ten, catalyzing a lifelong commitment to ‘create images about people, and for people’. He makes artwork to counter the social amnesia he sees recurring through history, encouraging us to find new paths forward by reckoning with the past. Valdez asserts that the unfolding ... More

Hans Hofmann (American, 1880–1966), The Ravine

ITHACA, NY.- Betty Ann Besch Solinger (1930–2022) wrote of her late husband, “David lived a full ninety years and never stopped being thrilled by seeing a work of art he thought was beautiful. He believed profoundly that art was its own reward and had little regard for those who used it for self-embellishment.” David M. Solinger (1906–1996) served in the US Army during World War II and built a law practice with a specialty in advertising and media law. After taking up painting as a hobby, he began a prodigious art collection and developed friendships with artists of his time, some of whom were also his clients. In 1956 he became the first president of the Whitney Museum of American Art outside of the Whitney family, and he was a leading figure in their transition from a family museum to an international institution. “David-the-collector was self-made, not b ... Using thin, meter-long strands of molten glass, Storch manipulates the material to create works that tell their own story.

EBELTOFT.- Danish visual artist Tove Storch ventures into uncharted territory with her new exhibition, Glassy Eyes, at Glas – Museum of Glass Art. This groundbreaking showcase marks Storch’s first exploration of glass as a medium, presenting a series of intricate sculptures that embody both fragility and explosive intensity. Although glass is a new material for Storch, she brings her expertise as an accomplished sculptor known for pushing the boundaries of materials like metal, plaster, paper, and textiles. Over the years, her work has examined the interplay of tension, collapse, and resistance in various materials, and Glassy Eyes reflects this same meticulous inquiry, now translated into glass. According to Storch, the exhibition signals “a new highway” in her artistic practice. At the heart of Storch’s latest works is a visceral exploration of the human body as both vessel and form. The exhibition features blood-red droplets, tear-shaped sculptures, and translucent orb ... More

Esben Weile Kjær's first major museum exhibition on view at Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg
AALBORG.- See the first major museum exhibition devoted to the work of the prominent, up-and-coming Danish contemporary artist, Esben Weile Kjær. Esben Weile Kjær’s artistic universe is crazy, colourful, loud and attractive. But don’t be deluded by all the music and the shiny sculptures with their smoothly polished materials. Esben Weile Kjær’s work is far more than merely attractive. His works blend popular culture and kitsch with current societal issues such as gender, psychology, technology and climate. The highly topical exhibition Solar System paves the way for reflection on the collapse of societies and social ideologies in both the past and the future. Brand new works and a synthetic staging create a frightening, yet beautiful dystopia featuring sinister creatures and traces of a bygone era. Trondheim Kunstmuseum presents an exhibition of works by Anna Odell
TRONDHEIM.- Anna Odell's latest work, "Rekonstruktion – Psyket" (Reconstruction – The Psychiatric Ward) explores complex dynamics and ethical boundaries within psychiatric care, drawing on Odell's own experiences in a psychiatric ward. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a video installation in which Odell revisits her time in a psychiatric ward and sheds light on a controversial relationship she had with a male nurse, which resulted in a pregnancy. This relationship, which clearly violated professional ethical guidelines, ultimately led to her discharge from the ward. The installation includes a filmed discussion among psychiatric professionals who discuss Odell's story without knowing about the personal connection between the patient and the nurse, gradually uncovering the ethical implications of such situations. Alfonso Artiaco presents 'Diego Cibelli: Un vuoto che non ha luogo'
NAPLES.- The exhibition project unfolds in the gallery rooms, like a circular fable in six episodes. The first two rooms, È nato Generosity and Metamorfosi, explore the theme of birth, interweaving cultural and scientific perspectives. From here, the route proceeds into dreamlike territories: Storie per farlo dormire presents a music box that interweaves visual references, juxtaposing styles and epochs, symbologies and inventions; conversely, Enigma, proposes an immersion into the mysterious and sometimes impervious spaces of consciousness. In this journey, the room Beata fragilità becomes the place where an attempt is made to name and make visible the shadows that disturb the human soul. Finally, the enigma is resolved in the last room, which takes its title from the exhibition: Un vuoto che non ha luogo. From the critical text by Sylvain ... More

The exhibition title alludes to the legendary Scheherazade, the Iranian narrator of 'The Thousand and One Nights'. A princess trapped in a fated marriage, Scheherazade used whatever tools were at her disposal, and so became immortalised in popular culture. Her husband King Shahryar had vowed that he will execute a new bride every morning. Therefore, over a course of 1,001 nights, Scheherazade told her husband a story, stopping at dawn with a cliffhanger, ... More

'Nicole Wong: Once It Sets' on view at Rossi & Rossi
HONG KONG.- According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word ‘set’ has some 430 definitions – until relatively recently, more than any other word in the book – and they have constantly evolved depending on the context. Hong Kong artist Nicole Wong (b. 1990) delves into the potential for such transformations in Once It Sets, her fourth solo exhibition on view at Rossi & Rossi Hong Kong. Fixating on natural and artificial crystalline solids, the artist amplifies or repeats processes of material transformation, thus delineating structural changes during these critical states and illuminating the energy that erupts from them. Amongst the seven works on view in the presentation, The Definition of Rain (2024) translates the dictionary entry of ‘rain’ into binary code. Opal and glass beads, representing 1s and 0s of the coding language, are strung together ... More
