PARIS.- Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is presenting an exhibition of works by American artist Donald Judd (1928–1994), the first solo exhibition of his work in three dimensions in France for 18 years. Curated by the artist’s son Flavin Judd, Artistic Director of Judd Foundation, this exhibition marks the gallery’s first collaboration with the Judd Foundation, represented in Europe since November 2018. One of the most influential artists of the post-war period, Donald Judd developed a unique visual vocabulary that broke with the conventions of modern sculpture, a non-representational art that exists purely in terms of its own physical presence. The exhibition brings together key works selected by Flavin Judd, spanning three decades from 1963 to 1993. With a focus on freestanding floor works and wall-based works, the show constitutes a diverse overview of Judd’s distinctive ... More

CHICAGO, IL.- Richard Gray Gallery opened Every Square Needs a Circle, a solo exhibition presenting new sculpture, installation, tar paintings, and neon work by Theaster Gates. Every Square Needs a Circle marks a continuation of Gates’s long engagement with the work of American sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois, whose examination of genius and progress in Black America from Emancipation to the mid-20th century has been a source of inspiration for the artist. Placing his interest in poetics and the history of objects, Gates debuts a multi-faceted installation that bridges the work of Du Bois with architectural excerpts from Chicago, expounding on the archives that hold and preserve records of Black intelligence. Relating moments from art history to stories of quotidian labor, Every Square Needs a Circle is a rumination on materials, time and repetition. Gates elects a 1962 artwork by Agnes Martin titled Little Sister as a foundational mom ... More

The Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) is internationally regarded as one of the leading artists of the twentieth century. She made her name with her 'Körperbewusstseinsbilder', or 'body awareness' paintings, in which she depicts the sensations experienced by her body, by means of which she defined her relationship to the world. When writing about this, she observed: "I searched for a reality that was more fully in my possession than the exterior world, and I found it waiting for me in the body house in which I dwell, the realest and clearest reality”. In addition to her paintings and drawings, the survey is remarkable for presenting a large selection of her films and sculptures, including works that have never been shown before. LONDON.- Blain|Southern is presenting Rosebuds & Rivers, Joan Snyder’s (b. 1940, New Jersey, US) first solo exhibition in the UK. Comprising new and recent paintings, the exhibition will include a group of monumental triptychs and diptychs alongside smaller-scale works. It offers an insight into the experimentation and visual language for which Snyder is celebrated. One of the pre-eminent artists of her generation, Joan Snyder made her breakthrough in the late 1960s with her ‘stroke’ paintings – a body of abstractions developed from her experiments regarding the anatomy of a painting. She painted paint strokes and other dissected parts – gestures, drips and marks – and laid them over pencilled grids, using the structures as a basis from which to compose narratives. ‘At the time my idea was to study the anatomy of a stroke, isolating them and using them much like creating a symphony or a piece ... LOS ANGELES, CA.- Regen Projects announces But I Woke Jus’ Tha Same, an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Los Angeles-based artist Christina Quarles. This marks her first solo presentation at the gallery. Quarles’ seductive paintings feature polymorphous figures arranged in contorted positions in space, rendered through expressive and gestural strokes that teeter on the edge of abstraction and representation. Referencing the history and techniques of painting, her work propels forward the limits of her chosen medium, and is informed by her multiply situated identity as a queer woman of mixed race. Dynamic compositions feature bold patterns and decorative motifs such as flowers, latticework, and plaid tablecloths – feminine tropes that reference domestic space. Yet the subjects in Quarles’ paintings ... More

Brussels boy to pee-cycle after landmark leak inquiry   Formula 1: A Loud, Low Hum, a group exhibition curated by Mira Dayal and Simon Wu opens at CUE Art Foundation   Exhibition explores how King Louis XVI's officers understood the American Revolution

BRUSSELS (AFP).- Brussels' famous landmark, the Manneken-Pis, is an insouciant celebration of going with the flow -- but even carefree little boys can go too far. City authorities recently discovered that a fault in the 400-year-old statue's plumbing was causing him to pee away 2.5 tonnes of water a day. In 2019, such waste is an environmental no-no. A missing part in the guttering under the diminutive statue's fountain sent his public urination directly down the drain. It may not be the most overwhelming torrent, but it was building up over time -- to the equivalent daily water use of five Belgian households. No-one is quite sure how long Brussels' celebrity has been suffering the leak. "We prefer to look to the future," says city engineer Regis Callens. And the future is recycling. Henceforth, the Manneken's pee will loop through a recuperation tank to be pumped back through his bronze bladder. "So it's really ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- CUE Art Foundation is presenting Formula 1: A Loud, Low Hum, a group exhibition featuring Nikita Gale, Laurie Kang, and Amanda Turner Pohan, organized by Mira Dayal and Simon Wu. Formula 1 is an expanded exhibition project exploring alternative potentials for data-collection. What does it mean to make a formula? Is a formula a guarantee, a container, an act of “capturing” the means of producing something? Probing the networked nature of formula- and exhibition-making processes, the curatorial premise began with a public invitation to submit formulas for “successful” works of contemporary art. For Formula 1, each artist produced new work partially in response to selected formulas from the call and partially as continuations of their past investigations. #2: Goopy material + detritus + render-y still-life arrangement = new-agey post-capitalist commentary on waste/ecology ... WASHINGTON, DC.- King Louis XVI sent thousands of French soldiers and sailors across the Atlantic to support the American War of Independence. It was an adventure none of them would forget. The special exhibition, Revolutionary Reflections: French Memories of the War for America, on view at the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati in Washington, D.C., from April 5 through October 27, 2019, explores how the king’s officers understood the American Revolution and their role in the achievement of American independence, and how they remembered the war in the years that followed—years of revolutionary upheaval in France that included the execution of the king and many of their brothers-in-arms. Drawn from the Institute’s collections, along with loans from private collections, Revolutionary Reflections pairs the written recollections of French officers with life portraits of the writers, includin ... Fondazione Prada opens the exhibition "Whether Line" by Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin
MILAN.- Commissioned by Fondazione Prada for its Milan venue, “Whether Line”, the large-scale multimedia installation conceived by Lizzie Fitch (USA, 1981) and Ryan Trecartin (USA, 1981), represents the first output of a creative process begun in late 2016, aimed at realizing a new movie that investigates the perpetual promise of “new” terrain and the inherent instability of territory. Taking the idealized rurality endemic to back-to-the-land ideologies as a conceptual starting point, the project blurs the boundaries between different forms of storytelling and experiences, such as films, video exhibitions and art installations, board games and videogames, mass entertainment and theme parks, public and sports events, kiddie parks and skate parks, merry-go-rounds, labyrinths and obstacle courses, and even the audio and video content encountered in waiting- ... It is the first of the series of exhibitions inspired by Balthus organized by Marc Jancou Contemporary in Rossiniere. Michael Cline explains how Balthus has inspired him: “I began with Balthus on my mind. As is my way, I opted for a plain face, no beauty, nor grotesque, an average person. I began with an ambiguous situation, a partially clothed figure in an interior setting. The figure nagged at me in this vulnerable state, and so I began to dress them, and wrap them, and pile ... Janet Borden, Inc. opens a new exhibition of vintage Kitchen Still Lifes by Jan Groover
BROOKLYN, NY.- Janet Borden, Inc. announces a new exhibition of vintage Kitchen Still Lifes by Jan Groover. Jan Groover created her famous Kitchen Still Lifes in 1978 and 1979. Using a large-format camera, she transformed colanders, knives, spatulas and baking pans into objects of beauty that still hold a visual interest that transcends their common use. Her seductively modern color palette of greens, pewter, bronze and brown tonalities permeates the space dissected by kitchen paraphernalia. These take on a new visual meaning as a result of Groover’s juxtaposition of the elements. Although never unrecognizable as everyday objects, these utensils float into an abstract amalgam of planes and shapes. This famous series of 16 x 20 inch color photographs have integrity and an elegance that is as fresh as it was when it was first shown in the 1970s. ... More
