The enslaved artist whose pottery was an act of resistance

A provided image shows the 1858 storage jar by David Drake, an enslaved Black man, made at Stone Bluff Manufactory in Edgefield district of South Carolina, inscribed with the poem “when you fill this jar with pork or beef / Scot will be there; to get a piece.”, now in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Poetic jars by David Drake are setting records at auction and starring in art museums, showcasing the artistry of enslaved African Americans. Metropolitan Museum of Art via The New York Times.

NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- The speckled brown storage jar looks humble, even homely, from a distance — something you might find on a back porch in the South. Come closer and you see the wild runs of alkaline glaze up and down the surface and some revealing marks by the artist known as Dave the Potter or David Drake, who made powerful stoneware pottery in the Edgefield District of South Carolina while enslaved by different owners. At the bottom of the pot are three marks that look like fingerprints, where someone — possibly Drake — dipped the pot into glaze. Across the shoulder runs one word that Drake inscribed, with a sharpened stick or similar tool: “catination,” a variant of catenation, the state of being yoked or chained. Just as notable, experts say, is that the jar is dated “12 April 1836,” two years after South Carolina passed an especially punitive anti-literacy law designed to prevent slaves from writing, making this single word an extraordinary act of resistance or de ... BERLIN (AFP).- A new museum dedicated to the long-silenced trauma of German civilians forced to flee eastern Europe at the end of World War II opens next week after decades of wrenching debate. Perhaps reflecting what its founders call their delicate "balancing act", the new institution in Berlin carries the unwieldy name of Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion and Reconciliation. Some 14 million Germans fled or were ejected from what is today's Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Baltic states, Romania, Slovakia and the former Yugoslavia between 1944 and 1950. Escaping the Russian army and later forced out by occupying powers and local authorities, an estimated 600,000 Germans lost their lives on the trek. Those who fled included people who had settled in Nazi-occupied territories as well as ethnic ... More

VIENNA (AFP).- Women may hold up half the sky, but when it comes to designing the public spaces and buildings in which they live, their voices have too often been silenced. A visionary project in Vienna aims to turn that notion on its head, with a suburb in the Austrian capital designed by and for women. It exemplifies how the city is trying to make urban space more inclusive, from brighter lights to broader pavements that make room for pushchairs, and how female architects and designers are driving the change. The new Seestadt district has been in the throes of development since 2012, a sprawling building site on the city's eastern edge that is projected to expand from its 8,300 population now to 20,000 by 2030. Giant letters on hoardings around some of the construction sites proclaim "Women build the city". By turning the focus on the role of women in urban design, ... More

The colouring of this artwork evokes the South of France and the composition employs some of Chagall's favourite artistic subjects. Further highlights include Joan Miró’s Nocturne (1942, estimate: £120,000-180,000) and Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita’s, Maternité (1954, estimate: £120,000-180,000). BERLIN (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- The members of ruangrupa, the Indonesian artist collective leading the next edition of Documenta, are under no illusions about the scale of the task they face. It will be the first time a group of artists has curated the five-yearly contemporary art megashow — and they’re planning it in the middle of a pandemic. Then there is Documenta’s fearsome reputation to reckon with. Curating the show, which is set to take place next summer and fall, is one of the art world’s most coveted tasks because of the freedom it offers and the weight it carries in defining the direction of contemporary art. Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne opens an exhibition of works by Jean Otth
LAUSANNE.- A pioneer of video art in Switzerland, Jean Otth (1940–2013) began using in the 1960s the visual possibilities being made available by the new technologies of the day, i.e., the slide as a projected and dematerialized image; television and its particular idiom; and the shifting experimental character of video. Whether we are talking about Otth’s moving images, paintings, drawings, or installations, it is the questions and issues of representation itself that lie at the heart of his experiments more than his attachment to any one medium in particular. The show offers an overview of nearly fifty years of artmaking, all mediums included. It allows visitors to take stock of both the depth and diversity of a body of work that is centered on the dialectic tension between representation and nonrepresentation, visibility and obliteration, presence ... First exhibition in the UK by the American artist Karin Gulbran on view at MASSIMODECARLO
LONDON.- MASSIMODECARLO presents Somnambulist, the first exhibition in the UK by the American artist Karin Gulbran and her second with the gallery. Seamlessly shifting from two to three dimensions, her works reveal fantastic and figurative scenes on hand-built pots and vases, that feature wide-eyed creatures, lush nature, and inhabited waters. Gulbran’s expressive beasts and creatures crawl around the edges of the works, the artist’s hand navigating the bumps and hollows of the surface with an ease that demonstrates her ability as a painter. The artworks in Somnambulist evoke a landscape of water and woods. The theme of the Somnambulist has interested the artist for a long time, inspired by the tradition of late nineteenth century ... Maureen Paley opens second solo exhibition by Felipe Baeza
LONDON.- Maureen Paley is presenting the second solo exhibition by Felipe Baeza at the gallery. At the heart of Felipe Baeza’s work is the body: abstracted, dismembered, remembered, obscured, suspended, floating, drowning, sprouting wings, feathers, leaves, both human and celestial, entrapped and expansive, unbound and unruly. In his series of collages Gente del Occidente de México II, for instance, Baeza renders the body grotesque and monstrous. Human limbs, torsos, and mouths are conjoined with photographs of pre-Columbian art objects to create totemic, hybrid entities that straddle multiple temporalities. They are at once more-than-human and anti-human as they scramble logics of self and other, male and female, subject and object.
