NEW YORK, NY.- “My favorite thing is crocheting 20 feet in the air,” artist Sheila Pepe said at her studio in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. There across the floor last month she was laying out coils of vibrantly colored shoelaces, paracord, rope and garden hose, more than 15,000 yards’ worth, to be strung and spun into her first outdoor installation, opening Monday in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. “Up high, in my overalls and my crochet hook in hand, on top of a drivable scissor lift, it’s the funniest gender joke in the world for me,” said the 63-year-old artist, who identifies as lesbian. “Now you’re Grandma! Now you’re Uncle Joe!” For more than two decades, Pepe has used the craft of crochet, which she learned as a child from her mother, to “draw” in three dimensions and infiltrate architecture. Her handmade, unruly webs, which she attaches to museum walls and ceilings in large-scale ephemeral installations, soar and sag — chal ... More

This almost unique painting shows two women, one Black and one white, side by side, presented as companions and equals, wearing similar dress, hair and jewellery.

COMPTON VERNEY.- Allegorical Painting of Two Ladies, an English School work dating to around 1650 was at risk of permanently leaving the UK after being sold at auction in 2021, but now with generous support from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) and V&A Purchase Grants, it will go on display at Compton Verney for the public to enjoy. This almost unique painting shows two women, one Black and one white, side by side, presented as companions and equals, wearing similar dress, hair and jewellery. The portrayal of a Black female sitter is highly unusual in this period, especially in showing an adult rather than a child in a position of subservience, thereby inviting important debate about race and gender during the period. Another remarkable aspect of the painting is the depiction of beauty patches on both the women. Although in vogue at the time, the painting appears ... More

Gold Rush photography achieves top prices during Hindman's American Historical Ephemera & Photography Auction   Enter the 50-ton concert hall that hangs like a disco ball   Almine Rech opening of two venues in Gstaad and the Principality of Monaco

Hemingway's Rolleiflex MX camera. Price Realized: $10,080.

CINCINNATI, OH.- Last week, Hindman’s summer American Historical Ephemera & Photography auction saw passionate bidding for early photographs and material surrounding America’s westward expansion. A half plate daguerreotype of three gold miners (lot 529) realized $37,800, five times its estimate. The image of the three men epitomizes the gold rush itself, as their somewhat haggard appearance is offset by supremely resolute expressions behind their lit cigars. Katie Horstman, Senior Specialist, American Historical Ephemera & Photography commented: “From early photography to manuscript archives, our team was excited to bring such a wide range of important historic memorabilia to auction. The strong prices achieved, particularly for historic images, demonstrate Hindman's role as a market leader in the category of early photography.” Overall, the ... More

A dress rehearsal for the Sonic Sphere a 66-foot-diameter spherical music hall suspended in air at the Shed, in Manhattan, June 15, 2023. (Christopher Lee/The New York Times)

by Javier C. Hernández

NEW YORK, NY.- The lights inside the cavernous McCourt space at the Shed had been dimmed, and a mystical soundtrack was playing. “Your journey begins in five minutes,” a recorded voice announced to the roughly 200 people gathered there on a recent evening. A curtain opened, revealing a 50-ton spherical, suspended concert hall that glowed red and orange. There were whispers among audience members that the hall, called the Sonic Sphere, resembled a spaceship, Epcot, a disco ball or the Death Star. Some people, snapping photos, joked that it might take flight during the nearly 70-minute program, a listening session of Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians.” Others were expecting a more spiritual experience. “I want to lose myself in the sound,” ... DALLAS, TX.- Heritage Auctions will offer a significant collection of large cents when the Collection of Walter J. Husak and the Liberty Cap Foundation crosses the block January 4, 2024, as part of the FUN Convention in Orlando, Florida. He purchased his first large cent — a rare 1804 Draped Bust, for $600 — in 1980, and began in the 1990s what became one of the most important collections of Sheldon varieties, which Heritage sold in 2008 for more than $10 million. In 2009, he founded the Liberty Cap Foundation to benefit American coin history research and education; at about the same time, he began his second large cent collection. PARIS.- Perrotin is currently presenting Portrait Mode, a solo exhibition by Xavier Veilhan in Paris. The portrait mode seems like the renewal of a historical genre through its digital transformation: the portrait (and the self-portrait) has proliferated endlessly. In the exhibition, the portrait is presented in two dimensions (by combining the techniques of marquetry and painting) and in three dimensions (using digital sculptures of solid wood, among others). The subjects are friends of the artist, members of the studio staff, and everyday animals (birds). Here, the self-celebration of each individual through the image is replaced by the celebration of all through the object. There is a term that Xavier Veilhan often uses when talking about his work: presence. The presence in the space of the sculptures and of the images that are freed from the two-dimensionality of the wall by materializing as bas-reliefs ... More

Composer Jerry Bock, left, and lyricist Sheldon Harnick, when they teamed up for the musical “The Rothschilds,” outside the Lunt-Fontaine theater in New York, Oct. 12, 1970. (Barton Silverman/The New York Times)

by Robert Berkvist

NEW YORK, NY.- Sheldon Harnick, the lyricist who teamed up with composer Jerry Bock to write some of Broadway’s most memorable musicals, including the Tony Award-winners “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Fiorello!,” died Friday at his home in Manhattan, New York. He was 99. His death was announced by a spokesperson, Sean Katz. Harnick’s lyrics could be broadly funny, slyly satirical, lushly romantic or poignantly moving. He gave voice to a broad range of characters, including starry-eyed young lovers; corrupt politicians; a quarreling Adam and Eve; and, in “Fiddler on the Roof,” struggling Jews in early-20th-century Russia. When three unmarried sisters in “Fiddler” confront the village matchmaker, two of them hopeful and the third cynical, they all end up having second thoughts: Matchmaker, matchmaker, plan me no plans I’m in no rush, maybe I’ve learned ... But it's far better known for its second appearance: as the album cover for Molly Hatchet's 1979 Flirtin' With Disaster, the Jacksonville, Florida, boogie rockers' second record. "It's extraordinarily rare whenever an artwork universally considered the best in any genre becomes available on the open market," says Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Todd Hignite. Cleon Peterson's first exhibition in Paris 'Cruelty' now on view at Over the Influence
PARIS.- Over the Influence, Paris, is currently presenting Cruelty, Cleon Peterson’s first exhibition with the gallery, and fourth exhibition with Over the Influence worldwide. In Cruelty, Cleon Peterson’s bleak vision grows bleaker and darker than ever before. Over the past 15 years, the Los Angeles-based artist has depicted a culture of atavism, rage, violence and exploitative power dynamics that have presciently tracked recent developments in political discourse both in the United States and, indeed, around the world. When Peterson’s work first received attention, the U.S. populist Right was still a fringe element, social media was in its infancy and identity politics had not yet divided society into fiercely opposed factions. The rise of Donald Trump, backed by fascistic forces and hysterical ideologues, grimly affirmed Peterson’s vision, which had once ... More

Anzaldúa urges artists to “write with your eyes like painters, with your ears like musicians, with your feet like dancers. You are the truthsayer with quill and torch. Write with your tongues of fire.” While her rallying cry was to women artists of color, who were often pushed to the margins of culture, it still resonates widely today. On a day like today, American painter Sam Francis was born
June 25, 1923. Samuel Lewis Francis (June 25, 1923 - November 4, 1994) was an American painter and printmaker. Francis was initially influenced by the work of abstract expressionists such as Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky and Clyfford Still. He later became loosely associated with a second generation of abstract expressionists, including Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler, who were increasingly interested in the expressive use of color.
