WASHINGTON, DC.- Celebrated for the fundamental role he played in promoting the architectural capriccio, Hubert Robert combined famous monuments of antiquity and modernity in unexpected ways to create strikingly new and imaginative city scenes and landscapes. On view at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, from June 26 through October 2, 2016, Hubert Robert, 17331808 is the first monographic exhibition in the United States on the artist as well as the first exhibition to survey his achievements as both a painter and a draftsman. DALLAS, TX.- The Dallas Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art announced today that they have jointly acquired a major sculpture by Walter De Maria. The work will receive its first museum presentation in three decades at the DMA this fall, followed by an SFMOMA installation in the spring of 2017. Large Rod Series: Circle/Rectangle, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 (1986) is an important installment in De Marias Large Rod Series, a group of floor-based sculptures that were among the artists most notable contributions to the minimalist movement. LONDON.- This September, Sothebys will offer at auction three Irish paintings recovered in County Wicklow in 2015. The works Jack Butler Yeats The Fern in the Area, Paul Henrys Landscape with Cottage, and Sir John Laverys Portrait de femme au chapeau come to sale following their theft from a house in Wicklow in 2014 and the subsequent transferral of ownership of the paintings to insurance company Chubb on their recovery last year. With a combined estimated of £47,000-70,000, they will be offered in Sothebys Irish Art sale in London on 13 September 2016. AMSTERDAM.- For the first time ever, the Rijksmuseum is presenting 170 Japanese prints from the Elise Wessels Collection, picturing Japans rapid modernization during the opening decades of the twentieth century. Alongside prints, the exhibition features kimonos and lacquerware from the Jan Dees and René van der Star Collection and posters on loan from the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. In the early 1900s, Japan was booming. Its modern urban centres offered a fertile climate for burgeoning industries and gave rise to new forms of leisure. ROME (AFP).- An Italian consumer group said Saturday it suspected artist Christo's popular floating walkway on a lake had involved an unreasonable waste of public money. The organisation Codacons said it would be filing a complaint to the Lombardy region's spending watchdog on Monday. "The Floating Piers" has been a smash hit with the public with visitors flocking to experience the three-kilometre-long (1.9-mile) walkway of 200,000 floating cubes on Lake Iseo since it opened on June 18. But according to Codacons, the huge cost of cleaning up after tens of thousands of visitors and ensuring their safety made it questionable whether the art installation should have been authorised.
