WASHINGTON, DC.- Celebrated for the fundamental role he played in promoting the architectural capriccio, Hubert Robert combined famous monuments of antiquity and modernity in unexpected ways to create strikingly new and imaginative city scenes and landscapes. On view at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, from June 26 through October 2, 2016, Hubert Robert, 1733–1808 is the first monographic exhibition in the United States on the artist as well as the first exhibition to survey his achievements as both a painter and a draftsman. More than 100 paintings and works on paper showcase his talents: he was a masterly landscape painter, a gifted and prolific draftsman, an engaging printmaker, and an acute chronicler of some of the major events of the day. The recipient of important royal and aristocratic commissions, including many from Russia, Robert was also the first Keeper of Paintings at the Musée du Louvre. Japanese prints from the Elise Wessels Collection on view at the Rijksmuseum   Art historian Philipp Demandt to be new director of Städel and Liebieghaus   Exhibition at National Gallery of Canada celebrates the work of Rufino Tamayo

PORTRAIT OF HAGIWARA SAKUTARŌ, Onchi Kōshirō (1891-1955). Kleurenhoutsnede op papier, 1949, P0109. Elise Wessels Collection – Nihon no hanga.

AMSTERDAM.- For the first time ever, the Rijksmuseum is presenting 170 Japanese prints from the Elise Wessels Collection, picturing Japan’s rapid modernization during the opening decades of the twentieth century. Alongside prints, the exhibition features kimonos and lacquerware from the Jan Dees and René van der Star Collection and posters on loan from the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. In the early 1900s, Japan was booming. Its modern urban centres offered a fertile climate for burgeoning industries and gave rise to new forms of leisure. As in Europe and America, women were pushing back old boundaries, forging a new model of the ‘modern girl’. Alongside optimism, there was also a prevailing sense of nostalgia, fed by feelings of uncertainty. In this era of vast change, the past was glorified as an ideal. With Japan in the midst of this whirlwind ... More

OTTAWA.- The National Gallery of Canada presents, from June 25 to October 10, 2016, Tamayo: A Solitary Mexican Modernist, an exhibition that celebrates the work of Rufino Tamayo, whose paintings, prints and sculptures brought international attention to 20th-century Mexican art. This is the first solo-exhibition dedicated to the artist ever presented in Canada. Tamayo is one of Mexico's most significant modernist artists, recognized for having achieved his own individual style despite the domination of his contemporaries, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco, who were uncompromising in their allegiance to the social and political ideals that formed the basis of Mexico’s post-revolutionary art. Younger than they by ten years, Tamayo, looked to the future and the modern world, as well as finding ... More

Christo artwork a 'waste of public money': watchdog   Exhibition at CFA Berlin celebrates F.C. Gundlach's 90th birthday   Contemporary artist Tony Feher dies from cancer-related complications

ROME (AFP).- An Italian consumer group said Saturday it suspected artist Christo's popular floating walkway on a lake had involved an unreasonable waste of public money. The organisation Codacons said it would be filing a complaint to the Lombardy region's spending watchdog on Monday. "The Floating Piers" has been a smash hit with the public with visitors flocking to experience the three-kilometre-long (1.9-mile) walkway of 200,000 floating cubes on Lake Iseo since it opened on June 18. But according to Codacons, the huge cost of cleaning up after tens of thousands of visitors and ensuring their safety made it questionable whether the art installation should have been authorised. "We want to know how much taxpayers' money has been spent on a project which, until now, seems to have generated enormous publicity for the artist without bringing direct benefits to local entities and citizens," the organisation said ... HOUSTON, TX.- Blaffer Art Museum joins the international art community and the family of Tony Feher in mourning the loss of a great artist and dear friend. "Tony's poignant and inimitable touch transformed materials and people in equally profound ways. I was fortunate to have worked with him and enjoyed his friendship for as long as I have," says Blaffer Art Museum Director and Chief Curator Claudia Schmuckli, who curated his 20-year survey in 2012. Tony Feher marked a pivotal moment in the artist's career and the museum's history as it celebrated the reopening of Blaffer after an 18-month renovation. It was our profound honor to share the beauty and power of Tony's seemingly fragile, yet tenacious work with our Houston community and with audiences in Iowa, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio, where his retrospective traveled to great critical acclaim, celebrated by Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe art critic Sebastian Smee, the New York Ti ... PHILADELPHIA, PA.- The Barnes Foundation presents Sun Splashed, a mid-career survey of the found-object assemblage art of Nari Ward, on view in the Roberts Gallery June 24 through August 22, 2016. Sun Splashed is the most significant exhibition of Ward’s work to date, bringing together over 30 works from the 1990s to the present. The exhibition offers a close look at the artist’s ongoing investigations, both material and intellectual, that have guided his practice for more than 20 years. Traveling from Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), where it was organized by Associate Curator Diana Nawi, the exhibition reveals the ambitious scale of Ward’s work and his continued experimentation with new materials. Animated by flânerie—the idle, detached observation of street life that 19th-century writers associated with the rise of modern cities, that was an important strategy of the French Impressionists—and making reference to Afr ... LOS ANGELES, CA.- Regen Projects presents an exhibition of new paintings by Berlin-based artist Daniel Richter. Entitled wild thing, Richter brings together recent explorations in painting that present a radical shift in pictorial language from his previous works. The results are striking and colorful images that challenge and expand the possibilities of the medium. This is the artist’s third solo show at the gallery. Considered to be one of the most influential painters of his generation, Richter’s work continues the lineage of post-war German painting that includes artists such as Werner Büttner, Martin Kippenberger, and Albert Oehlen. In the 1990s he gained critical acclaim for his colorful abstract paintings and large-scale, psychedelic figurative works. Combining elements of pure formal abstraction with representational images culled from popular culture and the ... More

Exhibition of new work by New York artist Joseph Stashkevetch opens at Von Lintel Gallery
LOS ANGELES, CA.- Von Lintel Gallery presents new work by New York artist Joseph Stashkevetch. The exhibition marks the artist’s fifth with the gallery. Joseph Stashkevetch is known for his realistic and richly textured drawings rendered in conté crayon on rag paper. In a striking expansion, the artist's new compositions frequently disturb the two-dimensional plane, challenging our acceptance of flat, three-dimensional imagery and engaging the paper as an active participant in the unfolding drama. The sculptural works collage multiple drawings, the roiled surfaces obscuring and exposing images in counterpoint. In addition to using his own photographs and memories as source material, Stashkevetch notably appropriates wallpaper patterns of nature; referencing a fundamental need to connect to an environment from which we have become increasingly divorced. ... BRUNSWICK, ME.- The Bowdoin College Museum of Art is presenting the first-ever exhibition to examine the emergence and evolution of symbolic, abstract, and conceptual portraiture in modern and contemporary American art. Titled This Is a Portrait If I Say So: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today, the exhibition takes its name from Robert Rauschenberg´s renowned 1961 portrait of Iris Clert—a telegram that simply states, “This is a portrait of Iris Clert if I say so.” On view June 25-October 16, 2016, the show includes more than 60 non-figurative portraits that pose provocative questions about what a likeness is; how a person’s individuality might be expressed effectively by another; how much a portrait can be influenced by the artist’s, as opposed to the subject’s, personality; and the very conceptualization of personal identity. “We’re delighted to present this dynamic ... For the 10 artists exhibiting in this group show drawing represents a starting point to develop their work as well as a final product through which they express themselves.
