THE HAGUE (AFP).- An 800-year-old Mexican skull decorated with turquoise mosaic, for decades believed to have been a masterpiece of Mixtec indigenous art is a forgery, a Dutch museum and media said Saturday. The National Museum of Ethnology in the western university city of Leiden made the shock discovery after an intensive four-year study on the skull, one of only around 20 in existence world-wide. "Radiometric dating showed the skull and the turquoise are from the correct time period and origin and are authentic," the museum said on its website. "But alas: further investigation showed a 20th-century glue was used (to mount the mosaic)," the museum said. The teeth are also false "as it was too well preserved for a skull that lay underground for centuries," Dutch daily Trouw reported. LONDON.- Sothebys will offer over 60 works from the Bar-Gera collection of Russian Non-Conformist Art in London on 29 November 2016, presented in a dedicated catalogue. Assembled over several decades by Jacob and Kenda Bar-Gera, it is one of the most significant collections of its kind. Five highlights will be shown in Moscow, including Vladimir Weisbergs White Receiver on a White Background dating from 1960 (£60,000-80,000), and a rare early work by Oleg Tselkov dating from 1969 (Circus, £50,000-70,000). LONDON.- As broadcaster Kirsty Wark and artist Michael Landy are announced as judges, the National Portrait Gallery invites entries for the BP Portrait Award 2017. To enter, artists are invited to upload a photograph of their finished painting to the BP Portrait Award website, which will be considered by the judges in the first round of the competition. Oxford saleroom Mallams expect the original oil showing David Cameron and Boris Johnson as members of the elitist Oxford University dining club to attract bids in excess of £5000. The story of The Bullingdon Club Painting by Oxford-based artist Rona begins in February 2007, shortly after the photo was first published in The Mail on Sunday.
