MILAN.- Pirelli HangarBicocca presents a retrospective of the work of Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens, one of the world’s foremost artists. Throughout her 40-year career, Janssens has continued to experiment with light, her primary material. She has investigated the sensory and performative nature of space and architecture, creating works that are mutable and ephemeral. Emerging from her research, the artist's interventions are set on the border between art and science, and investigate the limits of human perception and psyche, as well as the aleatory connotations of natural phenomena, down to their minimum scale. "Grand Bal" is conceived as an extended choreography that situates environmental installations alongside more intimate works, tracing a visual, aural and tactile path that invites visitors to move between the incorporeal, the tangible and between surreal atmospheres and the socio-political and cultural signs of our ... Reclaimed Blue 600 film is unlike other duochrome or monochrome films that require dye to make the colors stand out.

NEW YORK, NY.- In the spirit of innovation, Polaroid is proud to announce the release of Reclaimed Blue 600 film, an original film chemistry discovered through accidental experimentation. At the only Polaroid film factory in the world, a young chemist developed the new chemical process, inventing the striking blue film. Inspired by the challenge of using out-of-spec materials, Polaroid chemist Brian Slaghuis reclaimed those elements to create the limited-edition 600 film. “At the Polaroid lab, I’ve tested over 200 different chemicals as we’re constantly improving our film chemistry. After experimenting with one called TBHQ, the Reclaimed Blue film was an incredible discovery by accident,” Brian Slaghuis, Polaroid Chemist said. Reclaimed Blue 600 film is unlike other duochrome or monochrome films that require dye to make the colors stand out. Instead, Reclaimed Blue is the result ... More

Mystery surrealist work comes to Bonhams London   Detroit Institute of Arts expands African collection with acclaimed pieces now on public view   Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2023 exhibition and touring details announced

Remedios Varo (1908-1963) with possible additions by Óscar Domínguez (1906–1957) & Esteban Francés (1913–1976), Composition Surréaliste (tableau collaboratif), (Painted circa 1935). Estimate: £50,000 - 70,000. Photo: Bonhams.

LONDON.- Members of the Surrealist group would often play a game. It involved participants drawing or writing on a piece of paper before folding it and passing it on to the next person, who would add their addition without seeing the former’s work, and then, in turn, pass it on to the next player. It was called Cadavre Exquis (or Exquisite Corpse), and it was a practice that would progress into a form of collaborative painting, with one canvas featuring contributions from multiple artists. A rare example, Composition surréaliste (tableau collaboratif) by the Spanish artist Remedios Varo (1908-1963) with possible additions by Tenerife-born Óscar Domínguez (1906-1957) and Catalan artist Esteban Francés (1913-1976), is to feature in Bonhams’ Impressionist ... No Stars in the Night, 2023, Hand-embroidered cotton on cotton 48 x 105 x 1 in. / 121.9 x 266.7 x 2.5 cm.

NEW YORK, NY.- James Cohan is pleased to present A Mountain Looms, an exhibition of seven new multipanel embroideries and the New York debut of Jordan Nassar’s expansive installation The Sea Beneath Our Eyes, on view from April 7 through May 6 at 52 Walker Street. This is Nassar’s third solo exhibition with James Cohan. The gallery will host an opening reception with the artist on Friday, April 7, 2023 from 6-8 PM. A Mountain Looms raises questions of what lies ahead, suggesting that the mountain is an obstacle that must be overcome. Nassar depicts mountainscapes throughout his newest works, all within the framework of tatreez, traditional Palestinian embroidery. By rendering landscapes within patterns, he creates layers of perspective that recede or bring forward imagined vistas. In these embroideries, he pieces together panels of dense pattern as if they were tiles in a mosaic ... More

Pace Gallery announces representation of Grada Kilomba
NEW YORK, NY.- Pace is pleased to announce its representation of the Berlin-based Portuguese artist Grada Kilomba in the United States. Pace will represent Kilomba in collaboration with Goodman Gallery. Kilomba’s work draws on memory, trauma, gender, postcolonialism, and notions of selfhood to interrogate concepts of knowledge, power, and cyclical violence. The artist’s approach to these subjects is informed by her training in psychoanalysis and Frantz Fanon studies along with her past work with war survivors ... More

DNA confirms oral history of Swahili people
NEW YORK, NY.- A long history of mercantile trade along the eastern shores of Africa left its mark on the DNA of ancient Swahili people. A new analysis of centuries-old bones and teeth collected from six burial sites across coastal Kenya and Tanzania has found that, around 1,000 years ago, local African women began having children with Persian traders — and that their descendants gained power and status in the highest levels of pre-colonial Swahili society. The findings help elucidate the foundations of Swahili civilization, and suggest that long-told origin stories, passed down through generations of Swahili families, may be more truthful than many outsiders have presumed. “The genetics corroborate the Swahili people’s own history that they tell about themselves, not what others were saying about them,” said Esther Brielle, a geneticist and postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University ... Paul Jacobsen will be exhibiting 'Light Work' at signs and symbols through April 29th
NEW YORK, NY.- signs and symbols opened Light Work by Paul Jacobsen, last month, the artist's second solo exhibition at the gallery featuring six new paintings. Long interested in the techniques and tools that reveal the mechanisms of art- making, exemplified by his signature photographic lens flares in previous series, his latest works pursue similarly elusive subjects: the conditions of light and the invisible systems of material and labor. Light Work thus considers the interplay of the formal elements of painting and the structural underpinnings of daily life, blending trompe- l'oeil illusions with a bold color palette. The first of Jacobsen's unlikely subjects are the wooden frames that support a painting's shape, protect it during crated transportation, and even give structure to the walls on which it hangs. Typically covered by linen or drywall, this pine wood instead provides the literal framework ... More

Review: In 'Shucked,' a glut of gleeful puns and 'cornography'
NEW YORK, NY.- Puns, pundit John Oliver has said, are not merely the lowest form of humor but “the lowest form of human behavior.” The academy agrees. In the 1600s, no less a literary luminary than John Dryden denounced lowbrow verbal amusements that “torture one poor word ten thousand ways.” You may know how that one poor word feels after seeing “Shucked,” the anomalous Broadway musical about corn that opened Tuesday at the Nederlander Theater. For more than two hours, it pelts you with piffle so egregious — not just puns but also dad jokes, double entendres and booby-trapped one-liners — that, forced into submission, you eventually give in. Many of the puns, which I will not try to top, are of course about corn, from the title on down. The story is, after all, set in the fictional Cob County, where the locals, long isolated from the rest of the world by a wall of “cornrows,” ... More

Comedians in stores selling lamps
NEW YORK, NY.- While on hiatus last spring from his job as a writer and director for “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” Mike Karnell went to Mercanteinfiera, a trade fair in Parma, Italy, where he had one mission: Find the lamps. There, he met an older Italian vendor who invited Karnell to visit his warehouses in Milan. “I thought to myself: In the future, I want to be a fragile old man selling fragile old lamps. How do I work backwards from there?” Karnell, 35, said. About a year later, Karnell found a path. In February, he opened FloraLuce, a shop in New York City that specializes in vintage lamps and lighting fixtures. The lamps, which include some he purchased during his expedition in Milan, are primarily from Italy, were made between the 1930s and the 1980s, he said, and range in price from $500 to $4,000. Karnell runs the business with his wife, Sarah Schneider, a former “Saturday Night Live” ... More

Jewels from the descendants of Alfred, Lord Tennyson star in Bonhams London Jewels sale
LONDON.- Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria’s reign, the great Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) loomed large in the Victorian imagination. His eldest son Hallam – who would also act as his father’s secretary – would go on to become Governor-General of Australia, and Hallam’s wife Audrey – who would often help transcribe the poet’s words – would become one of the founders of Australia’s first maternity hospital for women in the outback. Offered directly by descendants of the great poet, jewels from the Tennyson family’s collection will be offered as part of Bonhams’ London Jewels sale on 26 April at New Bond Street, London.
