The Brazilian jazz great Flora Purim has many stories to tell
NEW YORK, NY.- Once, at a Miles Davis concert, Flora Purim was sitting alone. Janis Joplin took the seat next to her, and a friendship was born. Upon moving to New Jersey, Purim discovered that she was neighbors with JoÃ£o Gilberto. He invited her over and beat her at Ping-Pong. In 1965, at the JoÃ£o SebastiÃ£o Bar in SÃ£o Paulo, Purim was installed as the singer with a band called SambalanÃ§o Trio; on drums was her future partner, Airto Moreira. Chance, one could say, has played an outsize role in her life. But skill not luck is what made Purim a star of the 1970s jazz scene. Cosmic stories: Du Yun revisits her earliest music theater
NEW YORK, NY.- When composer Du Yun was a doctoral student at Harvard in the early 2000s, she felt like a fish out of water. Very much out of water, Du, 44, said in a recent interview. It was my first time not in a conservatory setting since I was 6. But Du now the Pulitzer Prize-winning conjurer of exhilaratingly elusive and often moving sound worlds did have a rich community of artistic collaborators. She was a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble, the group of new-music specialists started in 2001 by flutist Claire Chase, a fellow Oberlin conservatory graduate. Carnegie Hall's new season: What we want to hear
NEW YORK, NY.- After scaling back its current season as it grappled with disruptions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, Carnegie Hall announced Tuesday that it would return to full programming next season with a slate of more than 150 concerts. Sasha Waltz's 'In C' marries choreography and improvisation
BERLIN.- I started in the deep lockdown, said German choreographer Sasha Waltz. Everything was closed. And it was in the winter. It was gray, and everybody was depressed.
