NEW YORK, NY.- The lights dimmed and a Ferris wheel designed by Jean-Michel Basquiat began turning in time to “Tutu,” by Miles Davis. “It’s like it’s drawn on a sheet of paper,” said Ajani Purnell, 26, an executive assistant to artist Shepard Fairey, who joined the crowds at a warehouse complex in Los Angeles to gawk at — but not ride — the attractions at the revival of Luna Luna, a long-lost art amusement park that was created in 1987 in Hamburg, Germany, by some of the most famous artists of the day. “It doesn’t even look like it’s made out of metal.” The long-delayed reappearance of Luna Luna — with its Basquiat Ferris wheel, Keith Haring merry-go-round and installations by David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein — is drawing visitors from as far as Singapore, Seattle and New York, as well as plenty of Angelenos to the Boyle Heights neighborhood where it was recreated. There were art world insiders and casual fans and quite a few chi ... More

'Gregg Louis: No Empty Sky' new constellation paintings by Greg Louis at Nohra Haime Gallery   World's greatest copy of 'Amazing Spider-Man' No. 1 swings into Heritage's first Comics & Comic Art Auction of 2024   A 1939 Indian '4' motorcycle soars to six figures in Miller & Miller's final auction of 2023

Gregg Louis, Midnight in Wonder Valley, 2023. Acrylic and ink on canvas, 96 x 60 in.

NEW YORK, NY.- Nohra Haime Gallery is currently showing No Empty Sky, a solo exhibition by Saint Louis-based artist Gregg Louis. The exhibition showcases a new series of constellation paintings. In this body of work the artist explores and connects the physicality of his painting process with the mysticism of the cosmos. The work pulls inspiration from contrasting sources such as images of the solar system sent back by NASA’s James Webb telescope, the grit of a dirty studio drop cloth, and the lyrical qualities of color field painters such as Rothko, Frankenthaler, and Gilliam. Twisting these influences together, Louis constructs atmospheric paintings playing with both the macro and micro nature of the world around us. His process takes place on the studio floor, applying a watery mix of inks and paints onto raw canvas. The resulting paintings are a collection of drips, stains, scratches, and spills that up close celebrate elements ... More

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 Curator Pedigree (Marvel, 1963) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.

DALLAS, TX.- The new year hasn’t even begun, yet it wouldn’t be hyperbole to call Heritage’s January 11-14 Comics & Comic Art Signature® Auction the event of 2024 — or, perhaps, of a lifetime. Collectors will find among its superpowered offerings numerous iconic covers soaring alongside key Golden and Silver Age comic books in impossibly high grades, each one as stunning as it is significant. These books don’t look a day older than Kal-El when he crash-landed in a cornfield or Peter Parker when he was bitten by that radioactive spider or Wonder Woman when a warplane fell onto Paradise Island. They all look like a million bucks — or, likely and deservedly, much more than that. Among their historic ranks is one of only two copies of The Amazing Spider-Man No. 1 graded CGC Near Mint/Mint 9.8, an auction first at Heritage — or, it appears, anywhere else, as GPAnalysis does not list a single recorded ... ATHENS.- From December 2023 until the end of October 2024, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (ΕΜΣΤ) presents a three-part cycle of exhibitions exclusively dedicated to the work of women artists or artists who identify as female, under the umbrella title What if Women Ruled the World? With the re-hang of one entire floor of the museum’s permanent collection and a series of twelve solo exhibitions of Greek and international artists of different generations, over the course of the next seven months the entire museum will gradually be taken over by women artists. Despite recent advances, as women artists and cultural practitioners are still underrepresented in most aspects of the art world, this project, initiated by the museum’s artistic director, Katerina Gregos, aims to radically reimagine what a museum would look like if, instead of a few token pieces, works by women artists were the majority. ... NEW YORK, NY.- In Strasbourg, France, throughout the holiday season, Santa-capped teddy bears festoon a restaurant’s facade. Stuffed polar bears adorn another. In a Yuletide arms race, buildings are affixed with giant, gift-wrapped packages, glittering white deer and oversize gingerbread men. Turning the central medieval quarter into a Christmas maze, curtains of lights glow above cobblestone lanes lined with food and gift stalls. And in the central Place Kléber, lights on a nearly 100-foot-tall Christmas tree flash and glow, synchronized to carols. Across Europe, Christmas markets pop up like fairy-dusted street fairs, with temporary chalet-style shops selling everything from handmade ceramics to warmed wine and abundant food. Visitors shuffle among the merry warrens, holding their cellphone cameras high. “The closer you get ... More

Eight−metre−long bronze eel trap sculpture by Aunty Kim Wandin presented for NGV Triennial 2023
MELBOURNE.- A monumental new public artwork created by Wurundjeri artist Aunty Kim Wandin has been installed in the moat of NGV International on St Kilda Road as part of the NGV Triennial 2023. Visible to Melburnians twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, the eight-metre-long eel trap sculpture, Iuk bagurrk gunga, was cast in bronze from an intricately woven form created by Wandin in 2023. This major new public artwork acknowledges the profound connections between Wurundjeri people and the lands and waterways that they have been custodians of for generations. The installation also highlights the migratory paths of eels, which today traverse sewers and underground waterways across and beneath Naarm (Melbourne). Commissioned by the City of Melbourne in partnership with the NGV, the sculpture is a tribute ... More

A conductor for the future at home with 'Black Panther' and Prokofiev
NEW YORK, NY.- Anthony Parnther has a job that routinely takes him to fantastic places. Parnther, 42, makes his New York Philharmonic conducting debut this week. His destination? Wakanda. With a wave of his hand, he’ll evoke lush jungles and shimmering citadels as the film “Black Panther” screens overhead. Back home in Los Angeles in January, Parnther will pass through idealistic college classrooms and anxious laboratories, headed to a date with destiny in Los Alamos, New Mexico, when he conducts the sweeping score to “Oppenheimer.” But in a recent video interview, Parnther was finding his way to someplace quite different: Whoville. “I’ll be very honest with you,” he said in a video interview. “I’m sitting here trying to rapidly memorize the words to ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.’” He was cramming for a Christmas concert ... Holidays a drag? Every year, thanks to Jinkx and DeLa.
NEW YORK, NY.- It was half past 3 the day after the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, and a pair of America’s most famous drag queens strode up to the spruce’s formidable footprint, chatting about abundance. “I don’t like being inundated with anything,” Jinkx Monsoon announced as holiday music jingled loudly nearby. “She has this conversation about Christianity,” BenDeLaCreme started to explain, before Jinkx resumed her gripe: “Christianity, the Kardashians and ‘Star Wars,’” she chimed back in. “All things that I have never asked to know about, but I know everything about.” The reason for their visit, however, was indeed the season. For the fifth year, the duo — both alums of the TV competition “RuPaul’s Drag Race” — are presenting a live Christmas show filled with dancing candy canes, glittery gowns and songs about trauma. One hulking, one gaunt: Two very different 'Macbeths'
LIVERPOOL.- There is more than one way to tell a story. In England, two equally impressive new productions of “Macbeth” prove this, both featuring major stars in the title role and adopting strikingly different approaches to Shakespeare’s classic tale of hubris and betrayal. The first, starring Ralph Fiennes (“The Menu,” “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”), runs at the Depot, a cavernous converted warehouse on an industrial estate in Liverpool. Despite its grittily authentic set design and costumes, it is for the most part a conventional, realist treatment. The second, at the Donmar Warehouse, in London, and starring David Tennant (“Doctor Who,” “Des”), is a rather more high-concept affair, heavy on ambience and atmospherics. The leading men are, likewise, a study in contrasts: Fiennes’ Macbeth is a hulking, lugubrious presence, ... More

Santa Barbara Museum of Art acquires masterpiece by Danish modernist, Vilhelm Hammershøi
SANTA BARBARA, CA.- The Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA)announced the acquisition of one of the most significant 19th-century paintings in its history. Acquired from Agnews, London, the painting is the first interior created by Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) that is entirely devoid of people—a poetic vehicle for his nuanced psychological portraits of the experience of domestic spaces that still resonate today. Dubbed “the Danish Painter of Solitude and Light” by the breakthrough 1998 retrospective organized by the always prescient art historian Robert Rosenblum, the artist’s hauntingly melancholic, nearly monochromatic interiors have caused some to dub him “the Danish Vermeer.” The painting was acquired in honor of the tenure of recently retired Director, Larry Feinberg. On a day like today, Italian painter Masaccio was born
December 21, 1401. Masaccio (Italian: December 21, 1401 - summer 1428), born Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Simone, was the first great Italian painter of the Quattrocento period of the Italian Renaissance. According to Vasari, Masaccio was the best painter of his generation because of his skill at imitating nature, recreating lifelike figures and movements as well as a convincing sense of three-dimensionality. Masaccio died at twenty-six and little is known about the exact circumstances of his death. In this image: San Giovenale Triptych (1422).
