LONDON (AFP).- Two artists aged over 50 were nominated Wednesday for this year's Turner Prize, after the age limits were lifted for Britain's most prestigious yet controversial visual art award. Lubaina Himid, 62, and Hurvin Anderson, 52, were joined by 45-year-old Andrea Buettner and Rosalind Nashashibi, 43, on the shortlist announced at the Tate Britain gallery in London. First presented in 1984, the award set an upper age limit of 50 in 1991 but the rule was lifted this year to recognise that artists can peak at any age, the prize jury said. This year's nominees mark a return to more traditional art forms. British painter Anderson's vibrant works use still-life, landscape and portraiture to explore themes of community and identity. He draws upon his Jamaican heritage and references the visibility of the black community, with work such as "Is It Okay To Be Black?". Zanzibar-born Himid makes paintings, prints and installations which celebrate black creativity, referencing the slave trade and colonia ... More |

The bronze work by the Nazi sculptor Wilhelm Wandschneider was brought to Linz in 1942 as a "personal gift" from Hitler. Photo: NORDICO Stadtmuseum.
VIENNA (AFP).- The Austrian city of Linz, where Adolf Hitler spent several years as a teenager, will once again display an Aphrodite sculpture offered by the Fuehrer after keeping it in storage for years. The bronze work by the Nazi sculptor Wilhelm Wandschneider was brought to Linz in 1942 as a "personal gift" from Hitler, who wanted to make the city the "cultural capital" of the Third Reich. For 65 years it stood in the rotunda of a park overlooking the city, where the German dictator lived between 10 and 18 years old. But it was quickly removed in 2008 after a group of art students revealed its unsavoury origins. Linz's Nordico museum, which had stored the work, will now add it to its collections, Doris Lang-Mayerhofer, who heads the city's culture and tourism committee, said Tuesday. A detailed explanation will accompany ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Massey Lyuben Gallery presents Somethings Wrong, a solo exhibition of paintings by Martine Johanna. This is the artists first solo show with the gallery. Grief. The sense of impending doom is being fulfilled in "Somethings Wrong". Embodying a disappointment in dreams of past times in the harsh light of reality. Where nothing of what we felt like as girls has come to be. The works portray idioms of youth that melt away, while other scenes feel like being swept away by dreamscapes. Naively drawn totem animals work as figments of the imagination. There is a distinct feeling of loss coupled with a gratifying effect of color, composition and light. For the first time, several figures confront the viewer with a mixture of anger, coldness, grief, persistence, and distance. Martine Johanna is an artist known for her vivid paintings with both figurative and abstract elements. ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Matthew Marks announces Ellsworth Kelly Last Paintings and Ellsworth Kelly Plant Drawings, the next exhibitions in his galleries at 522 and 526 West 22nd Street. The nine canvases in Ellsworth Kelly Last Paintings, made in the months leading up to Kellys death in December 2015, are the culmination of his seven-decade pursuit of a singular artistic vision. As John Coplans once wrote, Kelly is quite likely to delve into any part of his repertoire and at any time add variations that may have been conceived months or years previously. This practice continued until the end of Kellys life, and several of his last paintings are either variations of earlier works or based on studies he made not just months or years but sometimes decades before. A new diptych revisits a single-panel 1963 painting, eliminating the background and ... More

CHORNOGORA MOUNTAIN (AFP).- Perched spectacularly 2,000 metres up on a snowcapped peak in Ukraine's Carpathian Mountains, the Bilyi Slon observatory has stood empty and battered by the elements for some seven decades. Abandoned only a year after it was built in what was then Poland due to the outbreak of World War II, it became a carcass of thick sandstone walls and missing windows that looked more like a ruined castle than a scientific outpost. Now, with efforts under way to raise around $1 million (920,000 euros) in funding, scientists aim to restore the wreck and transform it into a learning centre for young researchers studying wildlife, plants and weather patterns. "There was no roof, all the floors were warped," local mountain rescuer Vasyl Fitsak, part of a small crew stationed there, told AFP as icy winds swirled outside. MoreDickinson's stand at the inaugural TEFAF New York Spring fair celebrates the centenary of De StijlNEW YORK, NY.- The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of De Stijl (style), a Dutch art and design movement founded in 1917, and one that has exerted a lasting worldwide influence on modern art. Much as Mondrian and the other pioneers of De Stijl travelled from the Netherlands to America, the TEFAF brand is now crossing the Atlantic. To honour the centenary of De Stijl, and to mark the inaugural TEFAF New York Spring fair at the Armory, Dickinson devotes its stand to the De Stijl ethos and the artists who followed its fundamental principle of the paramount importance of line and colour. De Stijl encompassed painting, sculpture, furniture, architecture and design, and its central philosophy of neoplasticism was summarised by Piet Mondrian, who declared: Art
should find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight ... More'Love locks' on the block in Paris charity auctionPARIS (AFP).- Amorous couples, here's your chance to own a piece of the world's most romantic city: Paris is selling off the "love locks" that lovebirds attached to the city's bridges before officials cracked down on the practice. For years tourists inscribed their initials on the locks and hooked them to the railings of bridges, most famously the Pont des Arts near the Louvre, throwing the key into the Seine to express their undying devotion. But the tradition turned into a menace -- one section of the Pont des Arts collapsed under the weight of thousands of locks -- as well as an eyesore for many residents. The city began removing the locks in 2015 and replaced the metal railings on the Pont des Arts with acrylic glass panels to ward off the public displays of affection. But on May 13, the Credit Municipal de Paris will sell 150 bunches of the locks mounted on displays of wood ... characters who will not be pinned down: fleet of foot, they move swiftly across centuries, indifferent to mortality and geography (Jennifer Higgie, 2017). Andersson is known for her evocative paintings, creating worlds that have a near-hypnotic sense of familiarity with little trace of modern life. In addition to the prints, three large paintings on canvas expand upon the same stories and mysteries. This is the first time that Andersson has reimagined her unique visual language through woodcut print. Each depicts an animal, person, place or object delicately and laboriously ...
