LONDON.- Marking the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, the exhibition brings together more than 200 of the Renaissance master's greatest drawings in the Royal Collection, forming the largest exhibition of Leonardo's work in over 65 years. Drawing served as Leonardo's laboratory, allowing him to work out his ideas on paper and search for the universal laws that he believed underpinned all of creation. The drawings by Leonardo in the Royal Collection have been together as a group since the artist's death in 1519. BILBAO.- The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Gerhard Richter. Seascapes , a unique chance to view the largest set of his celebrated seascapes ever assembled to date. Richter’s seascapes are not mere depictions of nature. On the one hand, they challenge the viewer’s perception by painting in a way that resembles photography. Richter manages to achieve an extraordinarily smooth surface by applying highly diluted pigment, and blurs the image, as happens in some snapshots. On the other hand, Richter embellishes the landscape in his quest for perfection: in some works, the sky and the sea actually come from two different images that he fuses, becoming almost interchangeable and thus leaving the viewer to identify each of them. Gerhard Richter was born shortly before the outbreak of the World War II in Dresden, which would become a part of East Germany ... More

LONDON.- The Founding Museum is staging the first exhibition dedicated to the way William Hogarth (1697-1764) used sound in his art. Hogarth & The Art of Noise reveals Hogarth’s innovative use of sound, introducing audiences to a previously unexplored but important aspect of his art, and further cementing Hogarth’s legacy as the 18th century’s most original artist. Famed for his social commentary, no painter before or since has made such overt use of sound as a way of communicating a narrative. Taking as its focus the artist’s masterpiece, The March of the Guards to Finchley, the exhibition unpacks the painting’s rich social, cultural and political commentary, from the Jacobite uprising and the situation for chimney boys, to the origins of God Save the King. Using sound, wall-based interpretation, engravings, and a specially-commissioned immersive ... More

American picked to design vast car-free garden at Eiffel Tower
PARIS (AFP).- The city of Paris has chosen an American landscape architect to re-design a huge area surrounding the Eiffel Tower, a project that will banish almost all vehicle traffic near the immensely popular monument. "We can create the biggest garden in Paris... with much more biodiversity, much more ecology," Kathryn Gustafson said after Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo presented the plan late Tuesday. Gustafson has studied in France, where she has designed several parks and squares, but is best well known internationally for her memorial fountain for Britain's Princess Diana in Hyde Park, London. A total of 54 hectares (133 acres), currently crisscrossed by several roads including two major thoroughfares on each side of the Seine river, will be largely turned over to pedestrians and "low-impact transportation" such as bus and bike lanes. World famous Mexican guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela take meditative turn
NEW YORK (AFP).- Headlines have given little love to guitar heros in recent years, as streaming tastes favor rap and instruments of the greats are celebrated less onstage and more in museums. But more than a decade after soaring to global fame Rodrigo y Gabriela -- the Mexican classical guitar duo that draws inspiration as much from prog and thrash metal as flamenco and folk -- is still going strong, recently releasing their first studio album in five years, "Mettavolution," to rave reviews and embarking on a global tour. Disenchanted by the rock scene in their native Mexico, Rodrigo y Gabriela moved to Europe in the late 1990s, settling in Dublin where they began busking and playing local pubs with their fusion of metal with Latin sounds. It wasn't long before the pair -- which uses only nylon-stringed acoustic guitars to create their unique, frenetic style heavy ... More

Her works reminds us of the bars, dancers and actors of Otto Dix and George Grosz, but also refer to Jean-Michael Basquiat and the Old Masters.
