Human skull, on sale for $4,000, draws attention to Florida store   Asia Week New York zooms in on China's Southern Paradise: Treasures from the Lower Yangzi Delta   A win-win 'Loophole' giving artists space to create

The human skull that had been on display at a Florida store for Halloween with a $4,000 price tag. (Lee County Sheriff's Office via The New York Times)

by Lola Fadulu

NEW YORK, NY.- As a nod to Halloween, Beth Meyer, who owns a rock and crystal store in North Fort Myers, Florida, placed a human skull inside a glass display case there and surrounded it with quartz towers and other crystals. But Meyer, 62, who meant to use the skull only as a “conversation piece” and did not really want to part with it, put a “really high price on it”: $4,000. Still, the skull drew attention to her store, Elemental Arts, in the Paradise Vintage Market. On Saturday morning, while Meyer was unpacking vintage clothing and high-end glassware at the store, a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office came in to question her about the skull. It is a misdemeanor in Florida to knowingly buy or sell human remains. “We’re working hard to see if there was a crime committed,” said Carmine Marceno, the county sheriff. “When a human skull ends up in a store, it’s alarming.” The office will then decide whether ... by Scott Reyburn

LONDON.- On a recent afternoon, in a ground-floor retail unit in one of London’s many vacant office buildings, a pair of flame-red platform heel boots with what looked like tentacles growing out of them and a multimedia sculpture of a coffin-like object circled by plastic shark fins were on show. “I’m against empty space,” said Camilla Cole, the founder of Hypha Studios, a London-based nonprofit that persuades commercial landlords to let artists work and exhibit for free in unoccupied stores and offices. Cole had organized MELT, a group exhibition showcasing works by 32 recognition-hungry artists who work with Hypha and a fellow studio provider, Creative Land Trust. The show opened in Euston Tower, an empty 1970s high-rise in the city center, on the same day as the VIP preview of the nearby Frieze London fair. Founded in 2021, Hypha Studios provides free working space for more than 300 artists at nine sites across Britain. ... More

NEW YORK.- Thomas Erben Gallery is thrilled to present historically significant works from the ‘90s by British artist Oladélé Ajiboyé Bamgboyé. Critically supported, Bamgboyé’s work was included in Catherine David’s Documenta X (1997) as well as many exhibitions foundational to the now central discourse around our relationship to “the Other”, the history and lingering effects of colonialism, and a more expansive reading of Modernism. Chinoiserie lead second Bonhams Paris Classics sale
PARIS.- A nice selection of old master drawings and paintings along with pieces of furniture and sculptures lead Bonhams’ Classics Sale in Paris on Tuesday 14 November. This sale will be followed by Bonhams’ first Parisian sale of Ceramics entitled Fired Beauty: 500 ans de Céramiques Européennes on Wednesday 15 November. During the 18th-century, China seemed a mysterious, faraway place. Although trade between the two countries had increased over the 17th and 18th centuries, access to China was still restricted. Chinoiserie drew on these exotic, mysterious preconceptions. Mythical beasts such dragons also became a common Chinoiserie motif, summoning up all that was strange and wonderful about the East. Nette Megens, Bonhams Director of Decorative Arts for Europe and UK, said: “We are very happy to organize the first ... More

Tales that crackle with vitality, with or without a puppeteer
NEW YORK, NY.- In a crisp white gallery space on Great Jones Street, in Manhattan’s East Village, a large wooden box contains a meticulous mise-en-scène: a midcentury roadside motel room constructed at puppet scale, which means it’s half of human scale. Standing on a step built into the outside of the box, spectators can gaze down into the installation, a time-capsule environment called “Motel,” by master puppet artist Dan Hurlin. It has just one puppet inside — a motionless woman in an armchair in the corner, dressed with almost ostentatious modesty, one dark strand of hair hanging loose from her ponytail, a crucifix dangling from the chain around her neck. On the tabletop beside her, the key to Room 15 lies next to an envelope spilling $20 bills. On one of the double beds, the rust-orange spread is rumpled; outside the door ... More

Jean-Baptiste Andrea wins Goncourt Prize with sprawling novel
NEW YORK, NY.- Jean-Baptiste Andrea received the Goncourt Prize, France’s most prestigious literary award, on Tuesday for his novel “Watching Over Her,” or “Veiller Sur Elle.” The novel, published by L’Iconoclaste, a small, independent publisher, is a sprawling fresco and star-crossed love story that follows Michelangelo “Mimo” Vitaliani, a dwarf and skilled sculptor who at the end of his life is said to be “watching over” his masterpiece, a mysteriously powerful sculpture. Andrea, 52, a former screenwriter and film director, sets the nearly 600-page novel across several tumultuous decades in 20th-century Italy, including the years of fascism’s rise, when Mimo, young and poor, forges an intense bond with Viola Orsini, the adventurous and ambitious daughter of an aristocratic family. The 10 members of the Goncourt Academy, the French literary ... More

Desire Marea's genre-melting music stirs South Africa, and the world
NEW YORK, NY.- On a crisp Thursday morning hours before Desire Marea’s performance at the Transform Festival in Leeds, England, earlier this month, the South African songwriter sat in Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve, communing with his Zulu ancestors. It’s a practice he honed through his training as a sangoma, a traditional spiritual healer, and it is essential to his craft. “There’s no music if my ancestors aren’t invited and honored,” Marea, 32, said in a video interview from his hotel room later that morning. Quick with a smile and clad in a simple gray T-shirt and plain shorts from South African designer Lukhanyo Mdingi’s 2023 collection, Marea was far more soft-spoken than he is onstage, where his high-drama performances and penchant for experimental fashion speak loudly. Marea sings in English and Zulu; his music melds ... More

AMSTERDAM.- To mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of CoBrA (in Paris on 8 November 1949), Christie’s will offer 18 works that represent the diverse, sometimes diametrically opposed perspectives of CoBrA in the 20th / 21st Century: Amsterdam online-only sale, live from 7 to 21 November. Barry Manilow finally gets his wish: a Broadway show
NEW YORK, NY.- Barry Manilow is superstitious. Such a statement may come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the 80-year-old pop legend’s career, with decades of hits, endless Las Vegas residencies and international fame as a still-smooth crooner who wrote the songs that made the whole world sing. Yet, there is one thing Manilow has always pined for that now inspires some irrational fears: a Broadway show. For nearly 30 years, that goal has proved tantalizingly out of reach despite a labor of love: “Harmony,” a musical he composed with his longtime collaborator Bruce Sussman, the lyricist who also wrote the show’s book. “Harmony,” which follows the unlikely story of a sextet of 1930s singing and vaudevillian stars — the Comed ... Flashback
On a day like today, Swiss photographer Robert Frank was born
November 09, 1924. Robert Frank (November 9, 1924 - September 9, 2019) was a Swiss photographer and documentary filmmaker, who became an American binational. His most notable work, the 1958 book titled The Americans, earned Frank comparisons to a modern-day de Tocqueville for his fresh and nuanced outsider's view of American society. Critic Sean O'Hagan, writing in The Guardian in 2014, said The Americans "changed the nature of photography, what it could say and how it could say it. [ ... ] it remains perhaps the most influential photography book of the 20th century." Frank later expanded into film and video and experimented with manipulating photographs and photomontage.
