|
|
NEW YORK, NY.- With UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation, gmp has been presenting the practice's approach to building conversions through specific case studies since last year. In October 2024, the traveling exhibition will be on display at Goethe-Institut in New York and at Architektur Galerie Berlin, each with different focal points. More Resurrecting a British company that takes ballet ... everywhereLONDON.- Once upon a time, there was a plucky little ballet company that bravely toured all over the realm, bringing swans and fairies and tutus to all. Founded by a King (Harold King), it was called London City Ballet, and a real princess, Diana, became its patron. It survived from 1978 until 1996, when wicked powers (unmanageable debts) forced it to close. Almost 30 years later, a fairy godmother appeared, and the company has returned to the stage. The new London City Ballet, which opens the Joyce Theaters season on Tuesday with an all-British bill, is the vision of Christopher Marney, a British choreographer. Marney, 45, was thinking about forming a small ensemble when an anonymous Japanese donor independently offered to fund just such a project. It started when Marney choreographed a piece in Toky ... More Michaela DePrince, war orphan turned leading ballerina, dies at 29NEW YORK, NY.- Michaela DePrince, an acclaimed ballerina born during the civil war in Sierra Leone whose life story was no less fantastical than the fairy tales that inspire ballet, died Tuesday in New York City. More The 'Yellowstone effect': Cities cash in on cowboy cultureNEW YORK, NY.- It seems everyone is a little country these days: Markets for Western-themed fashion have been reenergized, and country music is hotter than it has been in decades. We call it the Yellowstone effect, said Joel Cowley, CEO of the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, one of the largest rodeos in the world. Theres a romanticism about the West and the cowboy that comes and goes. But Im not sure in my lifetime that Ive ever seen it as high as it is now. Cowboy culture going mainstream has translated to economic opportunities for cities and towns with a Western heritage. This summer, 1.5 million fans attended the Calgary Stampede to experience the annual rodeo show filled with concerts, cattle and circus performers. Those 10 days were a record turnout for the Canadian citys marquee event, and officials are trying to emulate that vibrancy ... More |

Flashback On a day like today, Indian painter M. F. Husain was born September 17, 1915. Maqbool Fida Husain (17 September 1915 - 9 June 2011) commonly known as MF Husain, was an Indian painter. Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s. A dashing, highly eccentric figure who dressed in impeccably tailored suits, he went barefoot and brandished an extra-long paintbrush as a slim cane. He never maintained a studio but he spread his canvases out on the floor of whatever hotel room he happened to be staying in and paying for damages when he checked out. In this image: M.F. Husain, India's most famous artist finishes off a canvas he painted together with Shah Rukh Khan, right, one of India's biggest movie stars, during a fund-raising auction in a central London's auction house, Thursday June 7, 2007. The pair, two of India's biggest cultural brands, painted the piece, that was to be sold in the auction along with other works by both established Indian masters and a newer generation of artists.
