Far-right surge rattles guardians of Nazi era remembrance   Part II of the David Hall T206 collection supplies comprehensive, highly-graded set to Heritage bidders   Christie's Hong Kong presents Fine & Rare Wines & Spirits

Visitors are seen through an iron gate carrying the German phrase "Arbeit Macht Frei" (work sets you free) at the former concentration camp in Oranienburg, eastern Germany on August 7, 2019. Odd ANDERSEN / AFP.

ORANIENBURG (AFP).- A tour group handpicked by the far-right party Alternative for Germany touched off a scandal last summer while visiting the former Nazi concentration camp Sachsenhausen north of Berlin. A few members of the delegation began asking the guide pointed questions about Allied bombing at the end of World War II, implying its impact on the civilian population was comparable to the Nazis' atrocities. "As our horrified colleague told me, the comments by obviously rhetorically trained people culminated in them questioning the existence of the gas chambers and the mass murders in them," the director of the camp's memorial, Axel Drecoll, told AFP. The guide broke off the tour and Sachsenhausen staff threw the group out. Drecoll, 45, demanded an apology from leading AfD figure Alice Weidel, who had organised ... More

A visitor (L) looks at documents at the new museum "Liberation of Paris, General Leclerc and Jean Moulin Museum", in Paris. Zakaria ABDELKAFI / AFP.

PARIS (AFP).- Flag-waving Parisians in period costume thronged the streets Sunday as armoured vehicles rumbled through the city in a re-enactment of the liberation of the capital from Nazi Germany 75 years ago. A column of military vehicles entered the city from the south, using the same route taken by the first Allied division -- led by French General Philippe Leclerc -- to reach the city in August 1944. To try recreate the scenes of rejoicing that their arrival triggered, some residents and business owners along the route decorated their balconies and shopfronts with French flags. Some participants in the "Freedom Parade" also gamely answered a call by the city of Paris to sport 1940s garb -- high-waisted skirts for the women and trousers with braces and berets for the men. Rene Gonin, a 99-year-old retired mason, recalled the long wait for the Allied forces to to arrive -- and the ... More

American Interiors, 2013 (detail). © Matthew Casteel.

ARLES.- American Interiors depicts the psychological repercussions of war and military service through images of the interiors of cars owned by USA veterans. Through working with veterans over five years, Casteel became aware of the subtle indicators of past traumatic experience. He also recognized that the condition in which we live can often be a signifier of our well-being and that even the state of car interiors can be a manifestation of human interiors. American Interiors explores the area between "the circumstantial and the evident," and it is in the space that separates the slickly produced military recruitment ads from the statistics about rates of veteran homelessness and suicide that this work resides. Casteel balances the empathy he feels for those who have survived the military experience, with a deep sense of outrage towards America’s industrial, military complex, and the institutionalized violence of warfare. American born, Matthew Casteel ... More

Two exhibitions in Berlin focus on perspectives on ecology and modernity
BERLIN.- Licht Luft Scheiße [Light Air Shit]. Perspectives on Ecology and Modernity proposes a diverse series of twentieth-century concepts and practices that resonate with our current ideas of sustainability. They are both historical references and points of departure for novel or updated reflections on alternative ways of living in the globalised world. In light of the on-going destruction of Planet Earth we must fundamentally rethink our relationship to the biosphere and all non-human beings. The ecological question is nothing new. In response to industrial growth and sprawling urbanisation under capitalism, numerous “reform movements” were launched over a hundred years ago: from cooperative housing associations to anarcho-syndicalist settlements, from self-sufficient urban gardening to ecological agriculture, to concepts for recycling waste. These innovations ... More
