Launching the gallery’s official exhibitions program at its Seoul location, CORRECTIONAL will feature sculpture, painting, and drawing for the New York-based artist’s first exhibition in Korea. The works in the exhibition, along with the title, offer critical insight into the multiple associations and meanings derived from the term “correctional,” which can be interpreted as both punitive and altruistic. Renowned for his ability to marry political concepts with personal identity and historical context, Ward brings forth new meaning to notions of truth and punishment, and a true understanding of correction. The gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Tuesday, August 28, from 6 to 8 PM, at 74-18, Yulgok-ro 3-gil, Seoul. Early in his career, Ward garnered acclaim ... More

Museum De Lakenhal is currently closed due to extensive restoration of the 17th-century building and the addition of a new exhibition wing.

LEIDEN.- In today’s news there have been reports of a possible newly discovered work by Rembrandt. Unfortunately, these reports are somewhat premature. Museum De Lakenhal has issued the following statement to explain the matter. The oeuvre of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn has always been rather fluid. Various attributions were made to paintings at different times, and these were frequently complicated by the fact that Rembrandt worked very closely with painters in his immediate environment, such as Jan Lievens and Gerrit Dou. The quest alone, for a new discovery, reads like an exciting adventure story, and that appeals to the imagination of many people. The preparations for the ‘Young Rembrandt’ exhibition, which will be on display from 3 November 2019 in the completely renovated Museum De Lakenhal, were preceded by years of intensive research into art history. The debate concerning ... More

Being offered at auction are 10 letters Hari wrote to her lover, the then unknown artist Piet van der Hem.

LOS ANGELES, CA.- World War I French spy Mata Hari’s series of love letters will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on August 30, 2018. Hari was accused and killed for being a double agent, though many historians now believe she was scapegoated by the French to shift blame for their military blunders during World War I. Hari was born in 1876 in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. She received acclaim as a circus performer and exotic dancer around the turn of the century. She was recruited by France to spy on Germany during World War I. In December 1916, Hari was given permission from the French Second Bureau of the French War Ministry to obtain the identity of six Belgian agents. Five agents were accused of submitting false material and collaborating with the Germans. The sixth agent was accused of being a dual spy for France and Germany and was executed. The other ... LOS ANGELES, CA.- Courtiers feasting at elaborately set tables, knights in gleaming armor, a richly clad monarch presiding over elegant festivities—these are the images often associated with the medieval and Renaissance courts of Europe. For rulers and members of the nobility at the center of these privileged spaces, the visual arts—illuminated manuscripts, paintings, drawings, enamels, and textiles—were central aspects of their political and cultural identities. All that Glitters: Life at the Renaissance Court, on view from August 28 to December 2, 2018 at the J. Paul Getty Museum, focuses on court culture during the transition between “late medieval” and “Renaissance” (or “early modern”) Europe. “During this critical period, the court ... More

MADRID (AFP).- The family of Francisco Franco will take possession of his remains after they are exhumed, one of his grandchildren was reported as saying on Saturday. "Of course we will take care of the remains of my grandfather, we will not leave them in the hands of the government," Francis Franco, one of the general's seven grandchildren, told conservative daily La Razon. The decision to exhume his body -- probably by the end of the year, according to Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo -- has divided Spain and opened old wounds. Rebekka Steiger, blind bend, 2018, oil, tempera on canvas, 190 × 240 cm.

BEIJING.- Galerie Urs Meile is presenting the first solo exhibition 猫头鹰–virages nocturnes in China by Swiss emerging artist Rebekka Steiger (b. 1993, Zurich, Switzerland). The gallery presents recent paintings and works on paper created during her residency at Galerie Urs Meile in Beijing. The Chinese part of the title is the mandarin word for ‘owl’ but literally translates into cat-headed hawk. The artist got across this word when she was looking for the historical meaning of a little bronze figure that she bought on the Beijing antiques flee market. The sculpture reminded her strongly of her often painted figures, meanwhile virages nocturnes is a colloquial term in French that describes a nightly stroll or being up in the night, meaning a nightly bend, turn or shift. This combination of the title coincides with what the artist wants to depict and deliver through her imageries. Through layer-by-layer c ... More

The Brazilian samba legend is 81 but on the eve of a Rio de Janeiro concert for her recent album "Deus e Mulher" ("God is a woman"), you wouldn't think so. In her unmistakable tone, Soares described herself as excited as ever to be going on stage, even if she now sings seated. "I consider this a good moment, an extraordinary one in my career. I don't know if it's the best. The best was when I started. Things are always marvelous when you start," she said. Soares's powerful voice is an integral part of Brazilian music. The fighting is real at Serbia's medieval festival
DESPOTOVAC (AFP).- Dressed from head-to-toe in knight's armour, fighters thrashed each other with steel swords in high-octane duels at a Serbian chivalry festival on Saturday. These were not staged re-enactment shows but full-contact fights in a combat sport known as historical medieval battle. Around 60 fighters from European countries spanning France to Romania participated in the tournament, wielding blunted weapons as they skirmished across a grassy pitch in the shadow of a 15th century fortress in eastern Serbia. The intense, highly-physical matches -- best described as mixed-martial arts but with medieval weapons -- are refereed and scored based on a point system. "I have a background in boxing and I love history, so for me (this sport) is a good mix," said 28-year-old French fighter Victor Rousseau, 28, as he prepared for a group ... More
