How a chance discovery of old negatives revealed a master photographer

Original photographs printed by Zaharia Cusnir, in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, Dec. 1, 2022. To the amazement of friends and relatives in his village, photographs by Cusnir, who died 30 years ago in obscurity, have been celebrated in exhibitions across Europe, and a publisher in Moldova has produced a coffee-table book collecting his oeuvre. ROSIETICI, MOLDOVA.- He died nearly three decades ago in a tiny village at the bottom of the valley, unheralded and quickly forgotten, except by a few old-timers who still marvel at how Zaharia Cusnir, a poor farmhand with four children to raise, put so much time into taking photographs with a clunky Soviet camera. “He was at every wedding and funeral with that thing,” recalled Vyacheslav Bulkhak, one of only a few dozen people, all pensioners, still living in the now mostly abandoned riverside hamlet of Rosietici, north of Chisinau, the capital of Moldova. About the only other thing residents remember about Cusnir — at times a teacher, collective farmworker and blacksmith — was that he liked to drink, hardly unusual in a region of Moldova studded with vineyards. He grew his own grapes and made his own wine. What really set him apart, though, was his passion for photography. He had no training and no fancy equipment, only a Lubitel, Russian for amateur, a cheap but sturdy twin-lens refl ... More

Gagosian opens an exhibition of gouaches made by Stanley Whitney   Flag flown on Gemini 10 and Apollo 11 touches down at $300,000 to boost Space Exploration auction   Major Exhibition featuring Lee Alexander McQueen and Ann Ray opens at the Crocker Art Museum

Stanley Whitney, Untitled, 2017. Gouache on paper, 22 x 30 in. © Stanley Whitney.

GSTAAD.- Gagosian celebrates the opening of the holiday season in Gstaad with Stanley Whitney: Paintings on Paper, an exhibition of gouaches made by the artist between 2015 and 2021. This is the third exhibition at the gallery in Gstaad, which opened in 2022. Whitney’s paintings imbue loose “stacked” compositions with dynamic and unpredictable rhythms of color and space. Inspired by sources as diverse as experimental jazz and American quilt making, he marshals energetically brushed blocks and bars of pigment distinguished by transparency and tension wherever they intersect. Having worked in an abstract mode since the 1970s, he consolidated his current approach in the early 1990s during time spent in Italy. There, captivated by the effect of light on the façades of ancient Roman buildings such as the Colosseum and Palazzo Farnese, he achieved a new understanding of the relationship between color and geometry ... DALLAS, TX.- An American flag that flew on two of the most significant space missions of all time soared to $300,000 to lead Heritage Auctions’ Space Exploration Signature® Auction to $2,254,958 Dec. 15-16. The out-of-this-world result for the Apollo 11- and Gemini 10-Flown Largest Size American Flag, Signed and Certified by Michael Collins, Directly from His Personal Collection, CAG Certified and Encapsulated was six times its pre-auction estimate. “This is an incredibly important flag because it flew with Collins on both Apollo 11 and on Gemini 10,” says Brad Palmer, Space Exploration Director at Heritage Auctions. “Gemini X was a historic mission that set a world altitude record in 1966, and of course Apollo 11, in 1969, was the mission that resulted in the first lunar landing. The fact that this flag was on both missions ... More

Gertrude Abercrombie, (American, 1909-1977), Untitled (Woman with Tethered Horse and Moon), 1947 (detail). Price Realized: $437,500.

CHICAGO, IL.- Hindman set a new world auction record for Gertrude Abercrombie with the sale of her 1947 painting Untitled (Woman with Tethered Horse and Moon) for $437,500. As a leader in offering works by the “Queen of the Bohemians,” the firm broke its own auction record for the artist of $387,500, which it set in February. Abercrombie was just one of many female artists who drove Hindman’s December 14th Post-War & Contemporary Auction to well above its total estimate. Building on the spellbinding success of the single-owner Gertrude Abercrombie auction this September, a new auction record was set for the artist with Untitled (Woman with Tethered Horse and Moon) (lot 4), 1947 for $437,500, against an estimate of $80,000 - $120,000. This mysterious and evocative 23 by 28 inch oil on canvas featured several quintessential Abercrombie elements – a solitary woman, a barren landscape, a white horse ... More

Victoria Miro is currently presenting "The Conceptualists", an exhibition of new paintings by Hernan Bas   Kunstmuseum Basel showcases works by thirty-one Ukrainian artists   Gladstone Gallery now presenting works by Richard Aldrich in the exhibition "Shadowrun"

LONDON.- Hernan Bas is celebrated for works that, permeated by an aura of eroticism and decadence, and loaded with codes and double-meanings, point to the intricacies of self-identity while celebrating moments of transformation – the ordinary becoming extraordinary. While earlier paintings hinge on characters with nascent identities and burgeoning interests, the works in this exhibition follow a new theme, in which Bas’ protagonists engage in a variety of obsessive pursuits that, deemed strange under everyday circumstances, might be rationalised or even championed when considered as ‘conceptual art’ ... Through a multifaceted, conceptually-based practice that encompasses painting, sculpture, and drawing, Aldrich defies simple categorization. Galerie Nathalie Obadia presents PATAQU&EacuteS by artist Guillaume Leblon
PARIS.- Galerie Nathalie Obadia is now presenting PATAQUÈS, the artist Guillaume Leblon's first exhibition in his gallery in Paris, following on from The Traveller Walking on Tiptoes in Brussels last spring. After his solo exhibition, THERE IS A MAN and more at the S.M.A.K (Ghent) in 2018, the artist is currently enjoying a solo exhibition entitled PARADE at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris). As an extension of this show, PATAQUÈS presents a new set of revisited sculptures. Living in a big city today engenders a strong impression of temporal and spatial dislocation. When Saul Anton met Guillaume Leblon in New York in 2019, the author pointed out that the incessant changes in modern times did not lead to the demise of the landscapes of yesteryear, but rather revealed "the total absence of stable ground, of a native land"¹. Mirroring a world in constant evolution ... More

Thomas Dane Gallery, Naples presents 'Mettere al Mondo il Mondo' curated by Mark Godfrey
NAPLES.- In 1971, Alighiero Boetti began to use the phrase ‘Mettere al mondo il mondo’. One translation is ‘giving birth to the world’, but another more prosaic translation is ‘putting the world back into the world’ which implies a way of making art that Boetti followed. Instead of inventing images, constructing forms, or having things fabricated, Boetti took the stuff of the world, rearranged it, and put it back into the world as art. He used stamps, maps, the names and lengths of rivers, the colours of biro pens. Boetti’s idea of putting the world back into the world is one approach among the many that artists take when transforming used objects, and this exhibition explores the different reasons they do this. In the early 1970s, Cecilia Vicuña left her home in Chile to flee the military dictatorship. She started to make tiny constructions from things she found, calling them ‘Precarios’ ... More
