by Matt Stevens and Graham Bowley
NEW YORK, NY.- Roughly 25 paintings by celebrated Ukrainian artist Maria Primachenko were burned as a result of Russias invasion of Ukraine, the countrys Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement posted to social media Monday. The destruction of the works has not been independently confirmed by The New York Times. In a tweet, the ministry said that the works had been housed inside a historical museum in the town of Ivankiv, about 50 miles northwest of Kyiv, the capital. Ministry officials praised the painter, known for her colorful folk art style, for having created world-famous masterpieces. Damian Koropeckyj, a senior analyst at the Cultural Heritage Monitoring Lab at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, said that satellite imagery confirmed the museum had been destroyed. The lab, a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, is monitoring cultural heritage sites at risk in Ukraine. LONDON.- Christies Laugh now but one day we'll be in charge: Banksy and 21st Century Editions online sale is open for bidding from 1 March - 15 March. This new auction is cheekily titled in reference to Banksys Laugh Now screenprint. The sale will predominantly feature works by Banksy, alongside editions created in the 21st century by both well-known and up and coming contemporary artists. Banksys Morons (Sepia) - Outside of the edition (2007, estimate £50,000-70,000) is part of this offering, the source image of this work is a photograph of the record-breaking sale of Vincent van Goghs Sunflowers at Christies in 1987, with van Goghs canvas replaced by Banksys text. Interestingly, this particular impression has extra areas of colour that are not often seen. Another highlight by Banksy is Choose your Weapon (VIP Gold) (2010, estimate: £200,000-300,000), the first time a gold colourway of ... More

Russian artists speak out against war, but fear reprisals | | National Gallery of Art acquires works by Betye Saar and Melvin Edwards | | Metropolitan Opera says it will cut ties with pro-Putin artists |
Alexandra Sukhareva.
NEW YORK, NY.- Young Russian artists Kirill Savchenkov and Alexandra Sukhareva were set to represent Russia in April at the Venice Biennale, the art-world jamboree that can turn little-known artists into global stars. Now, that potentially glittering future seems to have vanished. On Sunday, the pair withdrew from the event, posting a short statement on Instagram and Facebook. There is no place for art when civilians are dying under the fire of missiles, when citizens of Ukraine are hiding in shelters, when Russian protesters are getting silenced, the statement said. Raimundas Malasauskas, the curator of the Russian Pavilion where Savchenkov and Sukhareva would have presented their work, joined them in pulling out. The pavilion will now remain closed throughout the Biennale, according to a statement its organizers posted on Instagram. Many Russian artists oppose the war, but few have such high-profile platforms for protest as Savchenkov and Sukhareva. Thousands of street demon ... More

WASHINGTON, DC.- A pioneer of second-wave feminist and postÂwar Black nationalist aesthetics, Betye Saars (b. 1926) practice examines African American identity, spirituality, and cross-cultural connectedness. The Trickster (1994), recently acquired by the National Gallery of Art, reflects Saars continued introspection, her assertion of the aesthetic and conceptual power of African cultural forms, and the belief that art can be made from anything. This is her first assemblage to enter the National Gallerys collection where it joins one print and two mixed media works by her. Made from a seven-foot-tall antique heater adorned with a necklace of bells, chains, and vintage keys, The Trickster depicts Eshu, the trickster god ... More
The Metropolitan Opera in New York, March 12, 2020. Vincent Tullo/The New York Times.
by Javier C. Hernández
NEW YORK, NY.- The Metropolitan Opera said Sunday that it would no longer engage with performers or other institutions that have voiced support for President Vladimir Putin of Russia, becoming the latest cultural organization to seek to distance itself from some Russian artists amid Putins invasion of Ukraine. Peter Gelb, the Mets general manager, said the Met, which has long employed Russians as top singers and has a producing partnership with the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, had an obligation to show support for the people of Ukraine. While we believe strongly in the warm friendship and cultural exchange that has long existed between the artists and artistic institutions of Russia and the United States, Gelb said in a video statement, we can no longer engage with artists or institutions that support Putin or are supported by him." Gelb added that the policy ... More |

Ateneum Art Museum.
HELSINKI.- Russias military action in Ukraine makes it impossible for the Ateneum Art Museum to loan out works to the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This means that the cooperation of many years is interrupted, as the safety of the works cannot be guaranteed. The Ateneum Art Museum, together with the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, has been preparing the first exhibition of works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela in Russia for several years. The State Tretyakov Gallery is one of the largest and most important museums in Russia. The plan was to loan out Gallen-Kallelas iconic landscape paintings, Kalevala-themed works, and a considerable selection of unique prints from the Finnish National Gallerys collections for the exhibition. The Ateneum Art Museum is part of the Finnish National Gallery. One of its key tasks is to make works in its collections, especially Finnish art, available to new audiences. While Butterly works on an intimate scale, complexity, virtuosity, and rigor are condensed in her vessels, each creating an expansive universe of its own. BOSTON, MASS.- The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Martin Barooshian Art Trust are pleased to announce that the MFA has added 35 additional pieces by Martin Barooshian (1929-2022), to its collection. The acquisition includes important woodcuts and etchings as well as one monotype and three preparatory drawings. The MFA acquired its first work by Barooshian in 1950. Barooshian, a Boston native, was an American surrealist painter and an exceptionally accomplished printmaker. Barooshian rose to prominence during the 1950s and 60s, but his fame waned over time. There has been resurgent interest in his artistic contributions, including the publication of a biography and catalogue in 2020, and the MFAs acquisition represents a substantial step in his rediscovery. In a New York City art world insistent on non-figurative conformity, Barooshian struck out on his own path. The resulting abstract ... More |

Solo exhibition of paintings and mixed media works by Hayv Kahraman opens at The Mosaic RoomsLONDON.- The Mosaic Rooms presents Gut Feelings, a solo exhibition of paintings and mixed media works by Hayv Kahraman. In this new work, the artist delves into scientific research to situate the effects of trauma in the body and to investigate methodologies of physical healing and care. Developing from Kahramans ongoing exploration of embodied experiences of Otherness, the gut acts as a formal and material trope to investigate ideas of trauma and renewal. In this new series of paintings and drawings twisted and knotted intestine-like cords seem to engulf the female figures. Organ-like labyrinths allude to a complex web of interconnectivity, reminiscent of neurological transmitters, simultaneously entrapping and emancipating the female figures entangled within them. These repeatedly explored imageries are painted on linen canvasses, paper and ...
