NEW YORK (AFP).- Edvard Munch's "Girls on the Bridge" sold for $54.5 million in New York Monday, the second-highest auction price paid for a work by the Norwegian painter, Sotheby's said. The 1902 painting depicting women in colorful dresses that contrast with a dark, anguished landscape, fetched a price solidly higher than the auction house's estimate of above $50 million. The painting has broken records every time it has gone under the hammer. It went for $30.8 million in 2008, compared with $7.7 million in 1997. The Norwegian artist's most famous work, "The Scream," was his most expensive work of art to sell at auction, at $119.9 million in 2012. "Girls" is one of the star paintings at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale. The autumn art auctions organized by Sotheby's and rival Christie's are set to continue through the week. ... LONDON.- The stunning dress that Marilyn Monroe wore at her historic appearance at the Madison Square Garden charity dinner, where she performed the song Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy who was turning 45, is now for sale with Juliens auction in the US on 17th-19th November. Barnebys is the auction search engine which tracks the sale of some 500,000 items through 1,600 aucjtion houses. Pontus Silfverstolpe, one of the co-founders of the company says: The sale of this dress and the rest of the Monroe collection is likely to be one of the auction events of 2016 partly because it comes in the wake of the American Presidential election with the whole world watching the change of power taking place in the US. ANTWERP.- Visitors to the Rubenshuis in Antwerp will soon be able to admire a magnificent work by Tintoretto and his studio which was in the possession of David Bowie for almost 30 years. This powerful work, depicting an angel warning Saint Catherine of Alexandria of her martyrdom, has been acquired by a European collector for £191,000 in Sotheby's sale of the art collection of the legendary musician in London last Thursday. MAIDSTONE.- One of the most exciting projects in recent years at Maidstone Museum the scanning and facial reconstruction of its very own 2,700-year-old mummy is well underway thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The project, within the redevelopment of the museums Ancient Civilisations gallery, has seen the mummy travel across Maidstone to KIMS Hospital to undergo a full body scan and closer inspection by the local team of radiologists. The scan has revealed a number of fascinating finds about the mummy as well as other mummified remains in the museums collection all before the full investigation into results has really begun with a team of international specialists. GENEVA (AFP).- Switzerland will return to Egypt an ancient stela stolen from a temple dedicated to the goddess Isis, Geneva's public prosecutor said on Monday. The stone slab bearing a relief design was stolen 30 years ago from the Iseion temple at the Behbeit El Hagar archeological site in Lower Egypt. "During an inventory control in the Geneva free economic zone at the end of 2014, the federal customs identified... a granite engraving of unknown origin and alerted Geneva police, who opened a criminal case," the public prosecutor said. Egyptologist Philippe Collombert from the University of Geneva examined the artefact and it was traced to the Isis temple near the towns of Sebennytos and Mansoura in the Nile delta, the statement said. GLASGOW.- Dippy, the Natural History Museums famous diplodocus, will be on display at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in 2019. Never before on public display outside of London, Dippy will travel the length and breadth of the country, stopping at eight venues from early 2018 to late 2020. Kelvingrove Museum is the only Scottish destination on the tour. The iconic dinosaur is on a mission to inspire five million natural history adventures, encouraging families to explore nature on their doorstep.
