LONDON.- A stunning oval portrait by Thomas Gainsborough of his nephew and apprentice, Gainsborough Dupont, has been cleaned by the National Portrait Gallery conservation studios to reveal the artists original brushwork and vibrant colours. This is the first time in over 100 years this painting has been lent from its home at Waddesdon Manor, and was conserved especially for the forthcoming exhibition Gainsboroughs Family Album, opening at the National Portrait Gallery London on 22 November. It was only identified as a portrait of Dupont in 2003 by Susan Sloman, author of Gainsborough in Bath and a contributor to the book accompanying Gainsboroughs Family Album. MELBOURNE.- In his first exhibition for children, British artist Julian Opie has collaborated with the National Gallery of Victoria to create Julian Opie: Studio for Kids, a new interactive art studio for children and families. Presented alongside a major survey of Opies work, Julian Opie, also on display at NGV, the NGV Kids exhibition focuses on Opies interests in drawing and portraiture through digital and hands-on activities. LONDON.- Waddington Custot presents an exhibition of new work by American sculptor Jedd Novatt. The exhibition comprises of new, large-scale sculptures from Novatts Chaos series, and is his first solo exhibition at Waddington Custot. Novatts Chaos sculptures, constructed from linear, asymmetrical and quadratic shapes, are a group of works he has been developing since 2008. This exhibition will show Novatts most recent sculptures from the series, including three large-scale stainless steel sculptures at almost 3-metres high. FRANKLIN, MASS.- Diligent research by Bruce Wood of Woodshed Art Auctions propelled what was initially believed to be an ordinary copy of a painting to a six-figure finish at the firms November 1st fine art auction titled Gainsborough, Monet, Warhol & Friends. The painting was an oil portrait study by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) titled The Honourable Mrs. Graham. Woods examination of the under-drawing and comparison with Gainsboroughs drawing style led to the conclusion that the painting was a precursor to the finished work, which hangs in the Scottish National Galleries in Edinburgh. Still, to be safe, Wood called it an attribution for the sale, but savvy bidders were convinced. The final price, with buyers premium, was $103,125. BEIJING (AFP).- In China, where children are often saddled with a packed schedule of extracurricular activities before they even enter grade school, some parents are making room for a surprising pursuit: hip-hop dance classes. Inside a dance studio in central Beijing, a group of kids bopped up and down to an American hip-hop beat as they mimicked their teacher, a young woman in a dark blue beret and loose clothing.
