|
The ghostly image of a woman, which shows compelling similarities to other, near-contemporary depictions of the queen, was revealed by X-ray photography during an examination of a portrait of Sir John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane, which is attributed to Adrian Vanson (died c.1604-1610).
EDINBURGH.- An unfinished portrait of a woman believed to be Mary, Queen of Scots has been found hidden beneath another 16th-century portrait during a significant research project recently conducted at the National Galleries of Scotland and the Courtauld Institute of Art. The portrait was one of a number of works by the portrait painters Adrian Vanson and Adam de Colone, two Netherlandish artists who worked in Scotland at the end of the 16th century and beginning of the 17th century, to be examined by conservator Dr Caroline Rae, the Courtauld Institute of Arts Caroline Villers Research Fellow, who recently undertook a collaborative ... VENICE.- The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is present Mystical Symbolism: The Salon de la Rose+Croix in Paris, 18921897, the first museum exhibition on this revelatory and significant yet frequently overlooked series of Salons. Mysterious, mythical, and visionary themes, often drawn from literature, prevailed in the art of the six exhibitions, which were held annually in Paris from 1892 to 1897. Images of femmes fragiles and fatales, androgynous creatures, chimeras, and incubi were the norm, as were sinuous lines, attenuated figures, and anti-naturalistic forms. Featuring highlights from the Salons, this exhibition includes approximately forty works by a cross section of artistssome familiar, others less soand invite a fresh look at and new scholarship on the legacies of late nineteenth-century Symbolist art. LONDON.- One of the most powerful and arresting images of the First World War ever painted, A Dawn, 1914 hails from a landmark moment in the career of C.R.W. Nevinson, widely considered as the British artist of the First World War. The work perfectly encapsulates the best of Nevinsons Vorticist style of the period 1914-1916, depicting a seething mass of soldiers reduced to mechanical forms. The painting was first exhibited at Nevinsons acclaimed 1916 solo exhibition at the prestigious Leicester Galleries, attended by the likes of Sir Winston Churchill and G. Bernard Shaw, and is one of very few paintings from this landmark show still in private hands. Appearing on the market for the first time since it was acquired in 1964, A Dawn, 1914 will be offered with an estimate of £700,000-1,000,000 as part of Sothebys Modern & Post-War British Art Sale on 21 November. The importance of this restitution for the Hawaiians was also shown by the fact that high-ranking representatives of Hawaiian organizations came to Dresden for the ceremony in the Japanisches Palais.
DRESDEN.- Last week, for the first time in its history, the Free State of Saxony has returned human remains to representatives of the remains' country of origin. The remains were stolen from burial caves in Hawai'i between 1896 and 1902 and were sold directly to the Museum of Ethnology in Dresden and Arthur Baessler, a patron of the museum. Between 1896 and 1904, they became part of the anthropological collection of the Museum of Ethnology in Dresden, which, since 2010, belongs to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections). When these human remains were removed from their final resting place for the collection one hundred years ago, the deceased were transformed into objects. Now the museum itself is reversing the process of dehumanization; i.e., these remains are being rehumanized by not only being designated as objects with inventory numbers but as deceased ... More

He's a bloody four-letter man, oil, cloth, plastic, wood, acrylic, rubber, 6x10x3 inches, 2016.
BALTIMORE, MD.- Julio Fine Arts Gallery presents the exhibition Picking Up Pieces from October 27 November 22, 2017. The show includes more than 35 works of art by Jim Condron, one of this years top Pollock-Krasner award winners. The artist draws on humor and memory, and finds unexpected beauty in juxtaposing everyday objects and cast-off remnants with the traditional medium of paint. Condron picks up bits of physical objects that draw on the mental images preserved from his personal life and from his engagements with art history. Mundane fragments from everyday life, such as a 1970s tennis-ball can, candy wrappers, or a shovel handle, find new meaning in his surprising conflations. (The tennis-ball can, for instance, is at once banal and poignant, since the artist spent countless hours as a child by the courts as his mother played.) Condrons huddles of broken materials break from abstract ... More

Flashback On a day like today, Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer was born October 31, 1632. Johannes, Jan or Johan Vermeer (October 1632 - December 1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings. In this image: Participants of a press conference look at a painting, entitled Holding a Balance, by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany, 16 March 2011.
