LUXOR (AFP).- Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed several mummies, colourful wooden sarcophagi and more than 1,000 funerary statues in a 3,500-year-old tomb near the city of Luxor, hailing an "important discovery". The 18th Dynasty tomb containing at least eight mummies was discovered in the Draa Abul Nagaa necropolis near the famed Valley of the Kings, the antiquities ministry said in a Tuesday statement. It belonged to a nobleman named Userhat who worked as the city judge. It was opened to add more mummies during the 21st Dynasty, about 3,000 years ago, to protect them during a period when tomb-robbing was common, Mostafa Waziri, the head of the archaeological mission, said at the site. The gallery has had the great honor of working with Barkley since 2005. He was a situational painter, documenting the world around him in vivid and highly detailed paintings that capture the distinctive personalities of his subjects. He was a true artists artist, always dedicated to his singular vision; he was a figurative painter when it was trendy and especially when it wasnt. Martin Director James Rondeau announced today that after an in-depth national search, Sarah Kelly Oehler has been appointed the new Field-McCormick Chair and Curator of American Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Oehler succeeds Judith Barter, who retired from the position in December 2016. Oehler joined the Art Institute in 2002 as an Assistant Curator of American Painting and Sculpture, and most recently served as the Gilda and Henry Buchbinder Curator of American Art, focusing on the modern American art collection. Her current projects include Whistlers Mother: An American Icon Returns to Chicago (on view until May 21, 2017), and Charles White: A Retrospective (opening June 2018), the first major retrospective of this important African American artist in several decades. Dated 12 August 1952 and signed Love, Mister Papa, Hemingway sent the letter from Finca Vigia, the Cuban home where he wrote much of For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea, and which was expropriated by the Castro government in 1960, later becoming a museum.
