MADRID (AFP).- A painting that had been in the same family for generations and was only recently credited to Spain's famed artist Diego Velazquez was sold Tuesday in Madrid for eight million euros, auction house Abalarte said. The "Portrait of a girl," which portrays a young girl with large, sad eyes, her hands held together as if in prayer, is believed to be an early work by the Sevillian artist best known for his masterpiece "Las Meninas", on display in Madrid's Prado Museum. It is believed to have been painted by Velazquez around 1616 or 1617, when the artist was only 17 or 18 years old and still living in the southern Spanish city of Seville, the auction house said. It had been in the same family for several generations but had never been properly analysed until the owner decided to sell it. Richard de Willermin, a specialist on 17th century Spanish art who collaborates with the auction house, examined the small oil on canvas painting and concluded it was by Velazquez. ... More

PARIS (AFP).- The modernist architect I. M. Pei, who was once pilloried for plonking a glass pyramid into the courtyard of the Louvre, turns 100 Wednesday with his controversial creation now an icon of the French capital. The Chinese-American designer endured a roasting from critics before the giant glass structure opened in 1989, with up to 90 percent of Parisians said to be against the project at one point. "I received many angry glances in the streets of Paris," Pei later said, confessing that "after the Louvre I thought no project would be too difficult." Yet in the end even that stern critic of modernist "carbuncles", Britain's Prince Charles, pronounced it "marvellous". And the French daily Le Figaro, which had led the campaign against the "atrocious" design, celebrated its genius with a supplement on the 10th anniversary of its opening. ... More

After several retrospectives devoted to him, the art of Frank Stella comes to the collection with his monumental works. The artist’s process is revealed through his “Polish Village” series. The exhibition brings together works from his famous “Polish Village” series which evoke, through pointed titles, the artist’s interest in topics linked to the Holocaust and the Jewish people, using an abstract vocabulary. The sculptural qualities and colours of Frank Stella’s pieces are brought to light in a minimalist hanging which makes space for his large-scale pieces. The influence of the geometry of drawing, and interwoven decorative details from the façades ... More

Elsa María Meléndez, Flores del mal, 2014.

NEW ORLEANS, LA.- The Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University presents Beyond the Canvas: Contemporary Art from Puerto Rico showcasing the work of Zilia Sánchez (b.1926), Julio Suárez (b.1947), Arnaldo Roche Rabell (b.1955), Pedro Vélez (b.1971), and Elsa María Meléndez (b.1974). The exhibition, on view from April 26 through July 9, coincides with the 100th anniversary of Puerto Ricans’ U.S. citizenship. Spanning several generations, these five Puerto Rico-based artists challenge the notion of the canvas as a flat surface for painted images. Through tension-based strategies applied on the fabric—whether pulling, rubbing, folding, slashing, ripping, sewing, or warping—they lend their works a distinctive three- dimensionality. Exhibition co-curator and architect Warren James discovered this shared approach, explaining, “There is a particular way these artists in Puerto Rico are manipulating the ... More

MONTREAL.- Ed Atkins makes digital, computer-generated videos that emphatically stress corporal, analogue reality. The videos exhibited at DHC/ART have the startling ability to return us to our bodies despite – or perhaps because of – their bodiless, digital constitution. The animations themselves centre on representations of starkly physical things, sensations, and experiences – a singularly human affective terrain performed by uncannily realistic computer-animated surrogates. In combination with the imposing scale and volume of their installation, an Atkins video can profoundly unsettle the viewer, disturbing the distinction between what is alive and what is not, what moves of its own volition and what is ‘animated’. Each work in the exhibition features a solitary protagonist sharing intimate ... More
