CHICHESTER.- This summer Pallant House Gallery presents a major exhibition on the British artist John Minton (1917 1957), marking the centenary of his birth and 60 years since his death. It explores the artists achievements far beyond his reputation as a leading illustrator and influential teacher, spanning: Evocative wartime landscapes, including views of London, rooting him firmly in the Neo-Romantic tradition. Exotic subject matter in a new colour palette inspired by travel to Corsica, Jamaica, and Spain, including the newly rediscovered Jamaican Village (1951) (see above). ZURICH.- Indian miniatures are like windows onto dreamlike, idealised worlds. The pictures have a broad spectrum of themes ranging from religious and mythological subjects through literary, poetic motifs to secular, courtly scenes. The exhibition at Museum Rietberg is the first to offer a view of the various ideals of women in Indian painting. Images of women play a key role in many genres of Indian painting. LONDON.- Ben Uri is presenting the second exhibition in its series on refugee and migrant artists, highlighting the Polish contribution in Britain over the last century. This focus is particularly apt as the community approaches its millionth citizen, the largest migrant group in Britain, and as Poland celebrates a century since it regained its independence as a nation state after 123 years. LEEDS.- Harewood House Trust is exhibiting 63 works on paper by the Caribbean artist Frank Walter (1926-2009). These works have never been seen together in England before. The majority are landscapes, including many of trees purposely selected to resonate with Harewoods Capability Brown landscape. Apparently simple, they beautifully depict real and imaginary vistas which speak with an unmistakable visionary voice. AMSTERDAM.- Edward Krasiński (19252004) was a seminal figure in the Polish avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s. Currently, his work is being rediscovered by a younger generation of artists and curators. Following its opening at Tate Liverpool, the first retrospective of one of Eastern Europes most significant artists is now on view at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The exhibition examines his entire oeuvre, from the sculptures of the early 1960s, constructed using found materials, to his later installations, and emphasizes his experimental approach to making objects, spatial installations, and exhibitions. This year's non-profit programme of new artist commissions is curated by Raphael Gygax (Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich) and will feature eleven artists from eight countries across the world. Flashback On a day like today, Italian painter Francesco Albani was born August 16, 1578. Francesco Albani or Albano (17 March or 17 August 1578 - 4 October 1660) was an Italian Baroque painter. Albani never acquired the monumentality or tenebrism that was quaking the contemporary world of painters, and in fact, is derided often for his lyric, cherubim-filled sweetness, which often has not yet shaken the mannerist elegance. While Albani's thematic would have appealed to Poussin, he lacked the Frenchman's muscular drama. His style sometimes appears to befit the decorative Rococo more than of his time.
