Visitors bypass Berlin museums despite star attractions

In this file photo taken on February 07, 2011 the bust of Queen Nefertiti of Egypt is on display in Berlin's "Neues Museum" (New Museum). Berlin museums might house the iconic Nefertiti bust, the Ishtar gate of ancient Babylon or Rembrandt masterpieces, but they still trail global counterparts in popularity -- and the coronavirus is making things worse. BERLIN (AFP).- Berlin museums might house the iconic Nefertiti bust, the Ishtar gate of ancient Babylon or Rembrandt masterpieces, but they still trail global counterparts in popularity -- and the coronavirus is making things worse. Millions of euros have been poured into the institutions, yet the 19 museums managed by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) attracted just 4.2 million visitors last year, while the Louvre alone drew 9.6 million. Alarmed by lacklustre public interest, Germany is planning a major shake-up after a report commissioned by Chancellor Angela Merkel's government slammed the foundation as dysfunctional, outdated and out of touch. For Joerg Haentzschel, a culture journalist at the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, the capital's museums are plagued by "a persistent culture of exclusivity, lack of transparency and institutional arrogance. "Those responsible for museums are still serving their own peers first and foremost, rather than bringing everyone in -- children, peop ... More

NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, one of the most consistently provocative contemporary art galleries in Manhattan, will close after 26 years. Its founder, British artist-turned-dealer Gavin Brown, will become a partner in Gladstone Gallery, which announced the merger. Gladstone will also represent 10 artists who showed with Brown’s gallery. The closing of Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, known as GBE, represents the most significant upheaval to the New York art market since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in shuttered art spaces, cratered sales and calamitous job losses. The gallery, closed to the public since March, has presented art in online viewing rooms and at digital fairs, but those measures could not offset substantial declines in revenue. By this summer, ... LONDON.- White Cube presents ‘Babel’, an online exhibition featuring works concerned with language and communication. Some of their messages take on new and unintended meanings as we struggle with silence and strive to keep connected in our current circumstances. Language is the miraculous human invention that allows us to transmit our thoughts through space and time. One origin myth, the Old Testament account of the Tower of Babel, seeks to explain how humans might be united by language, then divided by language: it is a story of the power of communication and of communication frustrated. During our recent enforced physical separation we have clung to the messages that keep us connected, the news bulletins that keep us informed, and we’ve struggled with silence, lapses and static. ... American Artist's "Looted" launches today on the Whitney's artport
NEW YORK, NY.- Today, Looted by American Artist debuts on artport, the Whitney’s portal to Internet art and online gallery space for commissions of net art. The artwork symbolically and literally boards up the Museum and its website in an act of both redaction and refusal. Through this project, American Artist examines the distinction and tension between protest and looting, extending this physicality to the online space, which has been the primary site for viewing art and cultural programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. As an intervention into a museum website, Looted underscores that no space can remain unaffected by the examination of and demands for racial justice. The ... More
