The Mary Rose revealed once more on the very day of its sinking, 471 years ago

The ceremony held at the ship’s home, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, included a spectacular kabuki drop, revealing the ship after having undergone 23 years of extensive treatment, including state-of-the-art innovations, which has changed the face of conservation.

PORTSMOUTH.- After a six-month closure and a multi-million pound investment, the Mary Rose Trust today unveiled to the world the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s favourite warship, 471 years to the day after it was sunk. The ceremony held at the ship’s home, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, included a spectacular kabuki drop, revealing the ship after having undergone 23 years of extensive treatment, including state-of-the-art innovations, which has changed the face of conservation. Revealed for the first time ever was a carved wooden Tudor rose, which was discovered at the time of the second excavation in 2005 but only recently identified as the original emblem of the ship, and the first figurehead of its kind, as depicted in 16th-century drawings in the Anthony Scroll. Also revealed was a new CGI display of projected, reconstructed scenes from life on the ship, performed by museum staff. The scenes were created using information and artifacts ... More

LOS ANGELES, CA.- Julien’s Auctions has announced the Frieda Hull Marilyn Monroe Collection and Photography Archive to be auctioned in November 2016 as part of the highly-anticipated David Gainsborough-Roberts and Estate of Lee Strasberg Collections of Marilyn Monroe auction event. Frieda Hull was a member of the now famous “Monroe Six,” a New York City based group of teenagers who photographed Marilyn whenever and wherever they could. As an airline employee, Hull was in the enviable position of being able to photograph Marilyn also on the West Coast. Much to Marilyn’s surprise and delight, the group learned of her whereabouts from various sources, including movie magazines and her hairdresser. Many times the team simply waited for Marilyn outside of her hotel, her home, or events she was attending. Over time, Marilyn came to know each member of the group, even inviting them to the Roxbury, CT home she shared ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Billy Name, the in-house photographer at Andy Warhol’s studio and one of the few surviving members of the Factory, died at the age of 76 in Highland, New York on Monday, July 18. Born William Linich Jr. in 1940, Name grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1958 he settled in Manhattan and became involved in the avant garde downtown art scene working for the Fluxus group, Yoko Ono and LaMonte Young. He met Warhol in 1959 and it was Warhol who renamed him Billy Name. Besides being Warhol’s assistant, he was also his lover. While known as the Factory’s photographer, Name was the one who redecorated Warhol’s the space by covering the walls in silver spray paint and aluminum foil. The space was hailed as ‘the place to see and be seen” and attacted New York’s demimonde. While the silver décor seemed to evoke a sense of futurism of Warhol’s work, Name said he was inspired by the repainting ... More

Virtuoso launches concerto for Instagram   Bonhams offer camera entrepeneur's coveted collection   The RAF Museum is over run with Pokémon Go characters

The Israeli artist, who has led a revival of his instrument and regularly plays premier classical venues, posted the first of five movements of his "InstaConcerto."

NEW YORK (AFP).- In an experiment that acknowledges the modern era's shortening attention spans, mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital on Monday launched a concerto for Instagram with movements of 15 seconds. The Israeli artist, who has led a revival of his instrument and regularly plays premier classical venues, posted the first of five movements of his "InstaConcerto." Avital plans to post the subsequent movements of the concerto -- composed by Slovak-born conductor and pianist Peter Breiner -- each day on his Instagram account at @aviavital. "We wanted to raise questions with this project, both about the artistic value of the composition within the given restrictions of the time-frame, and about the attention span of our generation and its relationship to classical music," Avital said in a statement. Copperfield London opens group exhibition
LONDON.- Copperfield, London presents Miseratione non mercede, with works by David Escalona, Julia Varela, Oscar Santillan and Marco Godoy. Translated to 'compassion not gain', the title draws on a Latin inscription in an old operating theatre. Hidden in the roof of the nearby St Thomas’s Church this was a space where those without money could receive pre-anaesthetic surgical treatment. Always in reference to the body, the exhibition contains interconnected expressions of empathy, communication and the overcoming of adversity. What it is to be with, to be without and to recognise that all require support in some measure. Escalona’s work explores the world from the perspective of a vulnerable body. A gilded wheelchair titled El Carro de Apolo (Apollo’s Carriage) and a limply hanging parachute titled Misetatione non mercede II are typical of his combination of ... More

A thousand forms in the conquest of space: Cristóbal Gabarrón in Cannes
CANNES.- This summer the leading Spanish artist, painter and sculptor Cristóbal Gabarrón (Mula, Murcia, Spain 1945) invades the city of Cannes with his major retrospective Mille formes à la conquête de l'espace (A thousand forms in the conquest of space). Formed by over 200 artworks, the exhibit is taking place in ten popular locations such as the Centre d'art La Malmaison, La Croisette, or Le Suquet, among others. Cristóbal Gabarrón picks up where earlier generations of painters like Antoni Tàpies (1923–2012) and Antonio Saura (1930–1998) left off. Due to its modernity, his paintings and sculptures contribute to the present cultural debate in museology. Hence, he is an active participant in current trends. His work evolves to abstraction mainly based on transformation of the human being. He addresses life, death, justice, peace, and war. Accordingly, the city ... More

Sara MacKillop creates works especially for Haus der Kunst Capsule exhibition
MUNICH.- Sara MacKillop (born 1973 in Bromley, UK) created the works on view especially for the Capsule exhibition. Her works belong to the tradition of conceptual art and minimalism. The London artist is co-founder of the Artist Self-Publishers' Fair London 2015. She has been the subject of solo exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Charlottenburg, Copenhagen (2013), Spike Iceland in Bristol (2011), White Columns in New York (2011) and Whitechapel Project Space in London (2009). Upon entering her space, visitors leaving the dark realm of Capsule 05 enter into the light. The new works are minimalistic, airy and individual assemblages. Similar in design to earlier works, such as "Pens" (2006), in which the artist combined the same type of pens to form a kind of post, these assemblages are rooted in the everyday. They initially appear to consist of ordinary office materials, such ... More

LONDON.- Tornabuoni Art London is presenting Francesca Pasquali_Metamorphoses, the first of a series of solo exhibitions taking place in the summer months, introducing emerging Italian artists to the London art scene. Providing a platform for contemporary Italian art is a project very dear to gallery owner Ursula Casamonti, who explains: “The idea of opening our exhibition programme which is normally Modern-focused to emerging artists has been at the top of the London gallery’s agenda from the very start. For our first summer in London, we wanted to introduce Francesca Pasquali, a young artist whose work Tornabuoni Art has been following and promoting for many years. While Pasquali has encountered great success in Italy, she is little known abroad and we are proud to be presenting her first solo exhibition in London.” Metamorphoses, created in collaboration ... Works by Timm Rautert on view in Dresden
DRESDEN.- Timm Rautert’s “Bildanalytische Photographie” (Image-analytical photography) counts among the seminal works of German art photography of the 1960s and 1970s. In 2014 the Kupferstich-Kabinett acquired this group of fifty-six works, most of which are composed of several images. They are conceived as unique art works, as each of the images exists in only a single impression. The exhibition presents “Bildanalytische Photographie” for the first time in its entirety. Timm Rautert worked on “Bildanalytische Photographie” in the period of 1968 and 1974, a time of radical discourse about the role of art in society. He was then a student of Otto Steinert at the Folkwang Art School in Essen, gaining his degree in 1971. During his studies and in the following years Timm Rautert travelled to the United States of America several times, where he was in c ... More

MIT List Visual Arts Center presents works by Ethan Hayes-Chute
CAMBRIDGE, MASS.- Ethan Hayes-Chute’s installations, sculptures, drawings, text pieces, and performances explore ideas of self-sufficiency and self-preservation as alternative models for living. He constructs small, near-functional cabins and partial interiors out of entirely salvaged materials; the structures variously make reference to landscapes on the margin, life off the grid, ecology and waste. Many of Hayes-Chute’s recent works reflect a “DIY” vernacular approach to architecture and technology, and investigate processes of labor, production, and redistribution. The exhibition at the List presents a new architectural installation developed for Bakalar Gallery that includes the display of a number of repurposed 1980s Epson HX-20 Notebook computers, a series of smaller assemblages using found and retrofitted objects, as well as selected video works from ... Exhibition of recent watercolor and Sumi ink works on paper by Eva Lundsager on view at Van Doren Waxter
NEW YORK, NY.- Van Doren Waxter is presenting Other Night Other Light, an exhibition of recent watercolor and Sumi ink works on paper by Eva Lundsager, on view through August 26, 2016. The 20 works on paper exist in an ambiguous state between representational and abstract landscapes, eluding categorization and engaging a world in flux. An interview with Associate Director Paul Brainard and the artist accompanies the e-catalogue. Completed in 2015-16, the works on view approach an idea of classic landscape but remain in denial of that reference point through multiple disorienting horizon lines and enigmatic forms. Kinetic, possibly violent motion is arrested within their confines: glowing orbs expand, explode and collapse in on themselves, suggesting atmospheric changes or cosmic reactions. The attendant tension, augmented by spontaneous drips and splashes ... More
