BASEL.- This year, 291 leading international galleries will present works ranging from the early 20th century to contemporary artists. The Basel show will present galleries from 35 countries and six continents. Once again, a very strong contingent of galleries from Europe will be joined by exhibitors from across the globe. 17 galleries will participate for the first time, including three new exhibitors from the Asia Pacific region Antenna Space, Hopkinson Mossman and Magician Space and one from Africa, Cairo's Gypsum Gallery. The main sector of the show, Galleries, will feature 226 exhibitors presenting the highest quality of painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography, video and editioned works. NEW YORK, NY.- The Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art has appointed Daniel H. Weiss President and Chief Executive Officer of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At a special meeting of its Board, the Trustees voted unanimously that Mr. Weiss will assume the title President and Chief Executive Officer, and also announced that the Museum will lead a search to appoint a Director of the Museum, who will report to Mr. Weiss. The President and CEO will be responsible for the overall leadership of the Museum, and the Director will lead the core mission functions. At its meeting, the Board concluded that Weiss's background as a distinguished scholar with a doctorate in art history and college president, as well as his outstanding tenure for the past two years as President of The Met, make him an exceptional fit to lead the Museum. JERUSALEM (AFP).- Letters from Albert Einstein giving colleagues his thoughts on physics, God and Israel in the 1950s go under the hammer at a Jerusalem auction house on June 20. The website of Winners auction house describes five signed letters written in English between 1951 and 1954. The site gave current estimates of their combined value as between $31,000 and $46,000. In a 1951 letter to eminent physicist David Bohm, Einstein discusses Bohm's linkage between quantum theory and "relativistic field theory". "I must confess that I am not able to guess how such unification could be achieved," Einstein writes. The typed letter includes an equation added in neat handwriting and the writer's signature. LONDON.- Sothebys Modern & Post-War British Art Evening and Day Sales on 12 13 June brought a combined total of £8,345,750 / $10,634,989. Showcasing a host of outstanding and important works by Britains most sought-after and celebrated artists, the sale saw robust interest from collectors with a sell-through rate of 82% and more than 60% of works propelled over their pre-sale high-estimates. The auction was highlighted by William Roberts vibrant and dynamic The Tea Garden unseen since the late 1920s which sparked a bidding battle to sell for £848,750 / $1,081,562 (est. £250,000-350,000). The subject was likely derived from one of his expeditions around London, observing and sketching, and perfectly encapsulates the tumultuous energy of society following the war using a distinctive eye for detail and gesture. LONDON.- This summer visitors to the National Gallery can discover Giovanni da Riminis exquisite late Medieval painting, Scenes from the Lives of the Virgin and Other Saints. Giovannis panel, which is more than seven hundred years old, beautifully unites the tradition of late Byzantine icons with a new, more sophisticated style of painting, rich in narrative detail. Thanks to the generous donation of the New York collector and philanthropist Ronald S. Lauder, the work was acquired by the National Gallery in 2015. The panel will reside with Mr Lauder during his lifetime but will be on display at regular intervals at the National Gallery beginning with this exhibition. With a world record on Russian icons and a total hammer price of DKK 27.6 million ( 3.7 million / 4.8 million including buyer's premium), auction history was made on Friday 9th June. We are completely overwhelmed by the major international interest shown in the art treasures at last Fridays auction. PARIS.- Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) is a unique figure in Dutch 20th-century documentary cinema and photography. As a photographer, his preferred subject was the street, and in cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Hong Kong or Tokyo, he enjoyed hunting for subjects. Often qualified as a photographer of marginal figures, he sought in reality an aesthetic form, a visual authenticity, devoid of artifice, a beauty that was sometimes openly sensual, at times even erotic. Ed van der Elsken was fascinated by these proud figures, full of life and vitality. MECHELEN (AFP).- The painstaking job of restoring some of the world's finest ancient tapestries, stitch by stitch, is not for the highly strung or restless. Returning to its former glory the kind of creation that adorns a cathedral wall or is displayed at a world-renowned museum can take more than a year for tapestry restorers at Royal Manufacturers De Wit. Tucked away in an elegant medieval monks' residence in Belgium, head restorer Veerle De Wachter and her white-coated, all-female team of 15 labour away with needle and thread, adding thousands of stitches to a single piece. "Someone who is nervous or excitable would never manage it," she tells AFP, seated in front of a vast wall stacked with bundles of thread, a colourful reminder of the days when the company produced its own tapestries. The auction was 98 percent sold by lot and by value. "The market for rare and unusual specimens is still doing very well," said Jim Halperin, Co-founder of Heritage Auctions. "We saw robust activity at Long Beach with 13 bidders vying for the top lot." The biggest lot of the auction (in both hammer price and size) was a 107.76 ounce Kellogg & Humbert gold ingot, which sold for $188,000.
