NEW YORK, NY.- Moments ago in a packed salesroom at Sothebys New York, Claude Monets Meules from 1890 one of art historys most evocative images sold for $110.7 million. The result marks a new world auction record for any work by Claude Monet and the first work of Impressionist art to cross the $100 million threshold at auction. Meules is one of only four works from Monets acclaimed Haystacks series to come to auction this century, and one of only eight examples remaining in private hands. The other 17 examples reside in distinguished museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Musée dOrsay, Paris and six in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Strong results achieved for collections: Masterpieces from The Collection of S.I. Newhouse was launched in the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale with an outstanding result for the five lots offered, with a total to date of $100,955,000. NEW YORK, NY.- Perrotin New York is presenting a collection of four historical works by Claude Rutault, marking the artists second show at Perrotin New York and his fifth show with the gallery. For this exhibition, titled de-finitions/methods from the 70s, the gallery reintroduces Rutaults famous works, which have not been on view since the 1980s. These de-finitions/methods have been included at the Biënnale van de kritiek, Antwerp, Belgium (1979); documenta 7, Kassel, Germany (1982); and the Musée dArt Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (1983). In 1973 Rutault made a radical decision to paint his canvas the same color as the wall on which it was hung. Since then, Rutaults work has dealt with painting as a concept in itself, rather than painting as a finished and autonomous object. LOS ANGELES (AFP).- Emmy Award-winning US actor and comedian Tim Conway, known for his deadpan delivery and cast of bumbling characters on "The Carol Burnett Show," died on Tuesday at the age of 85, his publicist said. The versatile entertainer, who underwent brain surgery last September, had been suffering from a long-term illness in Los Angeles, Howard Bragman said. A native of Willoughby, Ohio, Conway served in the army for two years before embarking on his showbiz career as a television presenter and writer. He then starred on the 1960s ABC series "The Steve Allen Show" and "McHale's Navy." He was a fixture throughout the 1970s on "Carol Burnett," where he made his mark with memorable characters like the Oldest Man and Mr. Tudball -- as well as demonstrating a gift for ad-libbing and on-set pranks. WASHINGTON, DC.- The Cultural Landscape Foundation today designated the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden as a threatened and at-risk landscape as part of its Landslide program. A proposed redesign would eradicate the work of landscape architect Lester Collins. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden was designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and opened in 1974. Following negative reviews (the New York Times described the Bunshaft-designed sculpture garden as a gravel pit), the Smithsonian engaged landscape architect Lester Collins to redesign the garden in 1977; the Collins design opened in 1981. Jacqueline Kennedy's gray maternity dress, as seen in photographs taken by LIFE magazine photographer Edward Clark. The stylish lightweight wool dress features three-quarter-length sleeves, two pocket flaps, eight double-breasted buttons, and "Lord & Taylor, Fifth Avenue" and "Ma Mere" tags sewn into the cowl neck collar. Included with the dress are two vintage glossy black-and-white photographs, both showing Kennedy wearing the dress and working with her personal secretary, Mary Barelli Gallagher, in a second floor study of the Kennedy's Georgetown estate.
