PARIS (AFP).- Auguste Rodin's white marble sculpture of the mythical Ethiopian princess "Andromede" fetched nearly 3.7 million euros ($4.1 million) at a Paris auction Tuesday, well above the top estimated price of 1.2 million euros. The rediscovered masterpiece -- created in 1886-1887 and depicting the daughter of Ethiopian King Cepheus nude and asleep on a rock -- was sold by the Artcurial auction house just as Paris is marking the centenary of Rodin's death. An exhibit of more than 200 of his works and those of artists he influenced is showing at the Grand Palais in the French capital until the end of July. In 1888, Rodin presented the work to Carlos Morla Vicuna, a Chilean diplomat living in Paris at the time, as a gift, said Bruno Jaubert, Artcurial's director of the impressionist and modern art department. It has been in the Vicuna's family ever since. "For 130 years she stayed in this family of diplomats de ... More

LONDON.- On 6 July 2017, Christie’s will offer The Maria Fitzherbert Jewel in The Exceptional Sale as part of Christie’s Classic Week. The gold locket, which contains a portrait miniature of King George IV by the celebrated artist Richard Cosway, is one half of a pair. The other locket contained an image of the King’s secret and illegal wife, Maria Fitzherbert and was worn by the King on his deathbed, before being buried with him at Windsor Castle. The surviving half of the pair, The Maria Fitzherbert Jewel (estimate: £80,000-120,000), has passed down through descent directly from Maria Fitzherbert and offers an important insight into this most private relationship. The pair of miniatures were each contained within diamond-set lockets and faced with sections cut from a diamond, known as a ‘portrait diamond’. When Maria died seven years after the King she was holding a portrait ... More

LONDON.- David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin and Peter Blake were all part of the same stellar generation of British artists as well as lifelong friends – with Blake and Hodgkin even visiting Hockney in Los Angeles in 1979. This drawing is a study for one of David Hockney’s most iconic paintings, Study for Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) – which features on the cover of the catalogue for the current David Hockney retrospective at Tate Britain. Completed in 1972 following the devastating end of a fiveyear relationship with his first-love Peter Schlesinger, Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) shows a fullydressed Schlesinger standing at the edge of the pool gazing at a submerged figure swimming underwater. Originally derived from the accidental juxtaposition of two photographs on his studio floor, the work reveals the parallel intimacy and distance between the ... More

HORNU.- Following its debut exhibition in 2003, the nendo phenomenon has developed at an astounding pace. Under the guidance of Oki Sato, the Japanese collective has continued to impress us through the coherence and power of its vocabulary, its design that is imbued with simple, Japanese lines and given a twist not devoid of humour. Weather it is creating furniture, objects, accessories, eating utensils or interiors and architectures, nendo responds to the most broad-ranging projects with the same natural rigour, charged with enormous inherent poetry. Now aged 39, Oki Sato has enthusiastically accepted the Centre of Innovation and Design, Grand-Hornu’s invitation and for four months takes over all the interior and exterior spaces: stables, the hay store, atrium, north wing, the square courtyard and the oval courtyard… His exhibition forms an exclusive creation, devised in close relationship with the location. Qing, gilt bronze Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. 14" tall. Lot 155. Gianguan Auctions. June 10.

NEW YORK, NY.- Buddhist sculptures, which hold a commanding niche at the core of Asian art, come to the podium at Gianguan Auctions on Saturday, July 10. The gallery at 39 W. 56th Street opens its preview on Friday, June 3, giving collectors ample time to study the works. The earliest statue is a Northern Wei (386-535AD) stone Bodhisattva in an unusual seated asana with crossed ankles and hands in mudras “fear not” and “charity.” Backed by a mandorla, positioned atop a base flanked by lions, the 11” tall, mottled figure with some remaining pigment captures the sculptural style of the Wei period. It is Lot 148, valued at $40,000 or above. Two hundred years later, during the Northern Qi (550-557 AD) period, an anonymous artist carved a marble statue of a slender standing Buddha in a frontal stance. The spare, columnar posture is marked by a curved profile, and the long robe is crafted with parallel U-shaped folds. T ... More
