The Best Photos of the Day A picture taken on November 19, 2018, shows the mummy of Yuya, a powerful Egyptian courtier during the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt, on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo during a ceremony celebrating the 116th anniversary of the museum. The Mummy was embalmed in a classic' way, with the brain removed through the nose by breaking through the ethmoid bone into the skull. Resin was poured into his cranium to support and disinfect it. He was eviscerated from the left side and the embalming cut was covered by an oval gold plaque. The eye orbits were filled with resin-smeared linen, and some linen was introduced into the neck and throat to support it, and also into the torso to give it shape. The skin is lightly painted with resin. Yuya's arms are flexed and his hands are placed beneath his chin. This is a unique pose, maybe reflecting Yuya's status as father-in-law to the king. | MKG arranges restitution of a marble panel from Afghanistan | | Easter Island begs British Museum for statue return | | Bangladesh photographer freed after months in detention | Marble panel from the Royal Palace of Masud III in Ghazni. Photo: © MKG/Joachim Hiltmann. HAMBURG.- The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg is arranging to return an Afghan marble wall panel it purchased in good faith at a Paris auction in 2013. The panel belonged to a 78-part frieze dating to the twelfth century that once adorned the inner courtyard of the Royal Palace of Sultan Masud III in the town of Ghazni, Afghanistan. At the time it was purchased, very little reliable information was available on the panels provenance that would have put a damper on the enthusiasm for the aesthetic quality of this work of art. Although it has still not been possible to trace with certainty when and how the panel came onto the international art market, there is no doubt that it meets the criteria for looted art. The MKG has therefore been working since 2014 on the restitution of the panel, assisted by Germanys cultural property authority (Kulturgutschutz Deutschland) and the German Foreign Office. Adrian DENNIS / AFP. LONDON (AFP).- The governor of Easter Island on Tuesday tearfully begged the British Museum to return one of its famous statues, saying: "Give us a chance so he can come back". The London museum has held the Hoa Hakananai'a, one of the most spiritually important of the Chilean island's stone monoliths, for 150 years. "My grandma, who passed away at almost 90 years, she never got the chance to see her ancestor," said governor Tarita Alarcon Rapu after meeting officials from the British Museum, accompanied by Felipe Ward, Chile's national assets minister. "I am almost half a century alive and this is my first time," she added. The statue, or "moai", is one of hundreds originally found on the island. Carved by Polynesian colonisers, each of the big-headed figures was considered to represent tribal leaders or deified ancestors. It was an emotional moment for the ... DHAKA (AFP).- Award-winning Bangladeshi photographer and activist Shahidul Alam was released from prison Tuesday after more than 100 days behind bars, in a closely watched freedom of speech case. The 63-year-old Alam was arrested on August 5 for making "false" and "provocative" statements on Al Jazeera television and Facebook during student protests. He was freed from Dhaka's main jail Tuesday after being granted bail last week. Alam told AFP he hoped his release would "signal freedom for many others" also detained during the massive student demonstrations. "It is a fantastic feeling to be free in a free country, breathing free air. But I hope for freedom for everyone else," he said. He was held under controversial internet laws which critics say have been wielded by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to stifle dissent and harass journalists. More | | Bombed Regency Staircase, Upper Brook Street, Mayfair, 1942 © Bill Brandt Archives. Courtesy of Michael Hoppen Gallery. LONDON.- Bill Brandt [1904 1983] was a German born photographer who immigrated to the UK in 1933. Although he travelled throughout Europe he adopted Britain as his home and it was here that he produced his finest work. Known for his incisive depictions of the British, both high society and the working class, his distinctive, highly contrasting portraiture and landscapes were frequently shown in magazines such as Picture Post, Lilliput and Harpers Bazaar where he was a regular contributor. His early photojournalism work gave way to a more abstract vision as his career developed. Brandts influence on the photography world started in the 1960s when he embarked on a journey to find a new visual language. By using a wide-angle lens often with a distorted foreground he was able to produce a series of remarkable graphic images of both interior and exterior nudes on the Sussex and Normandy coast. Jan HENNOP / AFP. NICOSIA (AFP).- Cyprus has welcomed home a rare sixth-century Christian mosaic from the Byzantine period four decades after it was looted from a church in the island's Turkish-held north, Cypriot authorities said Tuesday. "The mosaic of Apostle Mark has been repatriated to Cyprus from the Netherlands," Cyprus's antiquities department said in a statement. "This is very important for Cyprus because we have so few mosaics from this period and indeed the world has very few examples of this Byzantine art form," Marina Solomidou-Ieronymidou, the antiquities department head, told AFP. The mosaic was stolen from the church of Panayia Kanakaria in northern Cyprus following the Turkish invasion in 1974. It was one of several icons looted from the church during this time. "The walled mosaics of Panayia Kanakaria, dating back to the sixth century AD, are highly ... More |

| More News | Maggots, licorice and cobra hearts at Sweden's 'Disgusting Food Museum' MALMO.- Cheese teeming with squirming maggots, sheep's eye juice and mouse wine: the "Disgusting Food Museum" explores why a dish seems delicious to some, but for others is stomach-churning. On show for three months at an old slaughterhouse in the southern Swedish city of Malmo, the exhibit -- created by Samuel West, who previously served up the Museum of Failure -- promises to shock the senses. "Disgust is always subjective because it comes with what we grew up with. It's kind of an indoctrination," says museum director Andreas Ahrens. "If we grew up with something, we don't find it disgusting," he says. To highlight the point, the exhibition puts foods from around the world on an equal footing, so lobster and foie gras are presented in the same way as chewy kiddie sweets and rabbits' heads. Gastronomic explorers are warned ... More Alison Jacques opens Branko Vlahović's first exhibition in the United Kingdom LONDON.- Alison Jacques is presenting the first exhibition in the United Kingdom of the Croatian sculptor, Branko Vlahović (b. 1924, Bjelovar, Croatia; d. 1979, Zagreb, Croatia). The exhibition comprises of work from the 1960s, bringing together key examples of Vlahovićs plaster sculptures alongside large-scale, monochrome drawings. It is only recently that Vlahović is recognised as a pioneer of Minimalism in Croatia. His work is an example of important Minimalist sculpture produced outside of the dominant Modernist canon. Without contact with his American peers, Vlahović was independently producing work of a radically reduced sculptural sensibility. Following a traditional sculptural education, Vlahovićs work gravitated towards pure geometric forms which intentionally negated subject matter. The works in the exhibition are important examples ... More Exhibition at Galerie Ron Mandos features new works by Kendell Geers and Krištof Kintera AMSTERDAM.- These two extraordinary exhibitions, running simultaneously at the gallery, include new work by both artists. In Voetstoots, his first exhibition in the Netherlands in over two decades, he explores the links between colonialism and modernist languages.
