The Old Mine Center for Science and Art in Wałbrzych opens exhibition of works by Magdalena Abakanowicz   US couple lose bid to win back WWII looted Pissarro painting   Appeals court rules for Berkshire Museum in remaining legal action over art sales

Installation view - Magdalena Abakanowicz, 'Presence, Essence, Identity' at Stara Kopalnia, Wałbrzych, Poland. Image Linda Parys.

WAłBRZYCH.- Presence, Essence, Identity features a broad selection of works by Magdalena Abakanowicz, one the world’s most acclaimed Polish artists, who gained international notoriety in the 1960s for her experimental and distinctive fiber sculptures. Generically entitled Abakans, these fluid woven structures made of organic materials challenged traditional sculpture by transforming the flat surface of a tapestry into a spatial and dynamic form that triggers complex visual and tactile experiences. Throughout her life, Magdalena Abakanowicz devoted her entire creative energy to the relentless exploration of the dialectical relationship between the human being and the wider natural world, translating her understanding of the essence of things into unique sculptural representations. Resisting all categories, Abakanowicz’s works are intelligent forms of physical thinking that challenge conventional ideas of art and ... More

Camille Pissarro, La Cueillette des pois, 1887 (detail). Gouache, 53,3 x 64,4 cm. Bruce et Robbi Toll – Archives du musée Camille-Pissarro, Pontoise / droits réservés.

PARIS (AFP).- An American couple on Tuesday lost their bid to win back a painting by Impressionist master Camille Pissarro, as a French court confirmed it must be handed to the family of the Jewish collector it was looted from during World War II. Wealthy art collectors Bruce and Robbi Toll had launched an appeal after a court ruled in November that the painting belonged by rights to the descendants of Simon Bauer, a Jewish businessman disappropriated by the Nazis in 1943. The Tolls insisted they had no idea the painting, "La Cueillette" ("Picking Peas"), had been looted when they bought it at Christie's in New York in 1995 for $800,000 (692,000 euros). But the Paris appeals court ruled Tuesday that the original court decision stood, in a move hailed by the Bauer family. The ruling "gives victims of the savagery committed by the Vichy government the right to recover ... More

The museum has sold twenty works through two groups of sales, as allowed by the agreement.

PITTSFIELD, MASS.- The Massachusetts Appeals court has ruled that those filing a lawsuit to stop the Berkshire Museum from selling works to secure the museum’s future, do not have the right to do so, affirming earlier decisions by the Superior Court. The Appeals Court ruled that those who brought the suit, James Hatt, Kristin Hatt, and Elizabeth Weinberg, do not have standing to do so, and further, that the Attorney General alone has the authority to take legal action on these issues. The case had sought a temporary injunction to stop the sales. “We are moving forward to secure the future of the Berkshire Museum and ensure it continues to be a vibrant and important part of this community,” said Elizabeth McGraw, President of the Board of Trustees. “And we welcome the community to support that work.” The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court allowed the sales of a limited number of works as expressed in a joint proposal of the Museum and the Office of the ... Scottish Maritime Museum makes landmark acquisition of early John Bellany work   Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, announces major Vincent van Gogh survey   National Portrait Gallery unveils newly commissioned portrait of Malala Yousafzai

John Bellany, The Boat Builders (detail) © Scottish Maritime Museum.

LONDON.- A painting by the Scottish artist John Bellany rarely seen before in public has been acquired by the Scottish Maritime Museum with support from Art Fund. The Boat Builders is one of Bellany’s earliest works, painted in 1962 when he was attending Edinburgh College of Art. Spanning an enormous 3x5 metres, it is one of the most ambitious paintings of his early career. The painting’s depiction of the construction of a boat is thought to represent Bellany’s ancestry, growing up in Port Seton near Edinburgh within a family of fishermen and boatbuilders. It is also said to signify Bellany’s relationship with his wife Helen, with the boat symbolising the beginning of their journey together through life. The work is an important addition to the museum’s collecting initiative, which aims to create a nationally significant art collection that represents Scotland’s extensive maritime heritage. The work will go on sh ... More

LOS ANGELES, CA.- Regen Projects announced representation of Los Angeles-based artist Alex Hubbard. Working across painting, sculpture, and video, Hubbard’s diverse practice references art history and extends the prescribed characteristics of his chosen mediums. Hubbard’s video works are composed like paintings — a flattened plane onto which a series of actions unfold — and render visible the performative nature of the artistic process. They feature sequences of simple acts of creation and destruction, often executed in a slapstick manner. In Collapse of the Expanded Field (2007) the viewer watches as the artist’s hands swiftly assemble a still life of flowers, chops off each bud stem by stem, and smashes the glass vase with a hammer until the constructed scene is wholly decimated and transformed. The evolving layered compositions present a visual cacophony that is the result of both deliberate ... More

Yemen exhibition highlights human cost of war
SANAA (AFP).- Images of an emaciated child crying and a boy hobbling on crutches are among more than 100 paintings on display in Yemen's rebel-held capital aimed at highlighting the human suffering of war. The week-long exhibition, inaugurated by rebel leaders, is being held at an ultramodern gallery that stands in sharp contrast to the rest of conflict-scarred Sanaa. "It's a message to all humanity," said Akram Yahya Baker, head of the People's Development Foundation, considered close to the rebels. Art enthusiast Fouad Naji sees in the exhibition a "sign of resistance despite the wounds and blockade". The show, which opened on Saturday, is the result of a workshop launched in early 2018 that saw artists visit bomb sites in Sanaa for inspiration, according to organisers. Yemen's capital, controlled by the Iran-backed Huthi Shiite insurgents, is frequently ... More
