Hello, We had four lawyers, three privacy experts, and two campaigners look at Microsoft's new Service Agreement – which will go into effect on 30 September – and none of our experts could tell if Microsoft plans on using your personal data to train its AI models. We do know that Microsoft's new agreement – which covers 130 products, including Office, Skype, Teams and Xbox – says it will use some data to train its AI. We also know that it mentions things like audio, video, chat, and attachments. But the agreement is so convoluted, it's impossible to make sense of what the company will do with what data for what purposes. If nine experts in privacy can't understand what Microsoft does with your data, what chance does the average person have? That's why we're asking Microsoft to answer a simple question: Are you using our personal data to train AI? When Zoom recently looked like they were making similar changes to their Terms of Service, they faced intense public pressure and backtracked. With just one month before Microsoft updates its Services Agreement, now is the time to force Microsoft to own up to whether – and how – they are using our personal data to train AI. Can you add your name to our petition asking Microsoft to say if they are using our personal data to train AI? Imagine a world where every private conversation you have on a Microsoft service could become fodder to train AI. The audio and video from every Teams video chat. Every Skype call. Every attachment in your Microsoft email products, every message sent over Xbox chat, and a whole lot more. It’s a world where our private conversations are used in a way that we’ve never even considered — let alone consented to. Developing AI has immense potential, but it cannot come at the cost of our privacy. Right now, companies are testing our boundaries when it comes to personal data and AI. At Mozilla, we are actively advocating for legislation to protect your privacy from companies’ insatiable appetite for data. Until then, we need to make sure that big companies don’t create precedents by being purposefully vague about what they can do with your data. Will you join our campaign and call on Microsoft to say if they're using personal data to train AI? Sign the petition & ask Microsoft if they're planning on using our personal data to train AI. Thank you for all you do for internet privacy. Christian Bock Head of Supporter Engagement Mozilla Foundation |
